Tanjiro held the coin out towards Kanao, saying, "This will decide whether you'll follow your heart from now on."
After saying this, Tanjiro flipped the coin high into the air. Because it was his first time flipping a coin, he didn't quite get the force right, and it went incredibly high.
"That's too high! Let's just say it's heads! If it's heads, you'll follow your heart!" Tanjiro looked up at the rapidly spinning coin in the air and made a decision.
Because Tanjiro was using a coin toss to decide for her, Kanao felt an unusual nervousness and fixed her gaze on the spinning coin high above.
Tanjiro then continuously adjusted his position to prepare to catch the falling coin.
Finally, Tanjiro caught the coin. Excited, he ran towards Kanao, exclaiming, "I got it! I got it! Kanao! Now watch closely, I'm going to open my hand!"
He slowly began to reveal the coin.
Kanao was very nervous and curious, silently wondering to herself, "I wonder which side it will be? He caught it with his back to me, so I couldn't see!"
When Tanjiro finally opened his hand, the coin, resting on the back of his hand, clearly showed heads—the side Tanjiro had hoped for. Tanjiro excitedly asked Kanao, "Kanao, see? It's heads! Heads!"
Then, Tanjiro jumped up in excitement.
"It's decided! From now on, Kanao will follow her own heart! Here's your coin back!"
Tanjiro extended his hand towards Kanao.
Thinking Tanjiro was returning her coin, Kanao reached out to take it.
Just as Kanao's fingers touched the coin, Tanjiro suddenly grabbed her hand and brought his face close to hers.
Kanao was startled, a rare look of alarm appearing on her face as she looked at Tanjiro. She seemed to think Tanjiro might do something inappropriate.
"Try to change! I hope that the next time I see you, you'll be able to decide with your heart, not by flipping a coin!"
"That's all I have to say. Everyone's probably waiting for me. See you again sometime!"
After saying this, Tanjiro released Kanao's hand and ran off.
Watching Tanjiro leave, Kanao couldn't sit still. She stood up and called out to Tanjiro, "Wh-why did it land on heads?"
"He tossed it facing me; there shouldn't have been a chance for him to cheat," Kanao muttered to herself.
Hearing this, Tanjiro suddenly stopped, turned around, and replied to Kanao, "Because your heart wished for heads, didn't it?"
Tanjiro then gave Kanao a very reassuring smile.
At that moment, Tanjiro's words and smile shattered the heavy chains that had been binding Kanao's heart.
Shinobu and Ryuji, watching from the second-story window, both smiled faintly at the interaction between Tanjiro and Kanao below.
"That smells like love, doesn't it, Ryuji?" Shinobu said, hugging Ryuji tightly.
