Chapter 34 - Rin’s Last Stand

Chapter 37: Rin's Last Stand

The black desert stretched endlessly beneath a dying sky.

Each step the group took sank slightly into the ash-like sand, as if the ground itself resisted their advance toward the Citadel of Saen. The towering structure loomed closer now—its jagged spires piercing the heavens like accusations that would never fade.

No one spoke for a long time.

Even Daichi, who always had something to say, remained silent.

Mei's eyes stayed fixed on the shifting sigils around her fingers. Kazuki walked at the center—steady, focused.

And Aria…

Aria kept glancing at his shadow.

It behaved normally now.

Still Quiet.

But she couldn't forget what she had seen.

Nor the whisper that still lingered.

The Ambush

It happened without warning.

The sand beneath them collapsed.

A violent tremor ripped through the ground, and from beneath the black dunes, creatures erupted—twisted beings of bone and shadow, their forms stitched together like broken memories forced into shape.

"MOVE!" Rin shouted instantly.

She was already in motion—blades flashing as she cut down the first creature before it fully emerged.

Kazuki reacted next, Oathflare igniting in his grip as he pulled Aria back from a lunging beast.

"Stay close!" he commanded.

Daichi slammed his fists into the ground, fire erupting outward in a blazing ring. "Too many of them!"

Mei's voice sharpened. "They're not random—this is a trap!"

And then—

The sky cracked.

A massive distortion formed above them, like reality itself was being peeled open. From it descended a colossal entity—humanoid, yet malformed, its body composed of shattered armor and writhing shadows.

Its chest glowed with a deep, pulsing core.

A core that felt… familiar.

Rin's expression darkened.

"…That thing is guarding something."

Kazuki stepped forward. "Then we break it."

But Noir's voice cut in sharply.

"No. This is not an enemy meant to be defeated."

They all froze.

"What do you mean?" Daichi snapped.

Noir's gaze locked onto the creature. "It is a Warden of Regret. It feeds on hesitation… and multiplies with it. The longer we fight, the stronger it becomes."

Silence fell.

Then Rin exhaled slowly.

"…So someone has to hold it off."

Kazuki's eyes widened. "No."

Rin smirked faintly. "Relax. I didn't say it'd be you."

Aria felt her chest tighten.

"No… Rin…"

Rin turned to them, her usual sharp confidence now carrying something deeper. Calmer. Final.

"You all need to reach the Citadel. That's the real battlefield."

Kazuki stepped forward, anger flashing. "We go together. No one stays behind."

Rin shook her head. "That's not how this works.

The Warden roared, its presence growing heavier, the air warping around it. Smaller creatures began reforming, crawling back together from pieces they had already destroyed.

"Every second we waste here…" Rin continued, gripping her blades tighter, "…it gets worse."

Kazuki's fists clenched. "There has to be another way."

"There isn't."

Her voice was firm.

Unshakable.

The Decision

Rin walked toward him slowly, stopping just a step away.

For once… she wasn't smirking.

"You're the one who carries everything," she said quietly. "The weapon. The power. The curse.

Her gaze softened slightly.

"And her."

She glanced at Aria.

Aria couldn't speak.

"I'm not built for destiny," Rin went on. "I'm built for moments like this."

Kazuki's voice dropped. "Rin… don't do this."

She smiled faintly. "You remember what I told you the first time we fought together?"

"…That you don't lose."

"Wrong," she said softly. "I said I don't lose meaninglessly."

A pause.

Then she stepped past him.

"This?" she said, facing the monstrous Warden, blades gleaming.

"This has meaning."

The Last Stand Begins

"GO!" Rin shouted.

The force in her voice broke the hesitation.

Kazuki grabbed Aria's hand. "We're coming back for you."

Rin didn't turn.

"…You better."

And then they ran.

Daichi hesitated only a second before following. Mei lingered, her eyes filled with conflict—then she turned as well.

Only Rin remained.

Alone.

Facing the storm.

Rin vs The Warden

The Warden moved first.

Its massive arm crashed down like a falling mountain—but Rin had already vanished.

She reappeared above it, spinning mid-air, both blades slicing downward in a perfect cross.

Steel met shadow.

The impact cracked the ground.

But the Warden didn't fall.

It adapted.

Its body shifted, reforming around her attack, tendrils lashing outward. Rin twisted mid-motion, narrowly dodging, her boots skidding across the black sand as she landed.

"…Fast," she muttered.

The creature roared again, summoning more fragments of itself.

Rin exhaled slowly.

"Alright then."

Her stance lowered.

Her breathing steadied.

For the first time—she wasn't fighting like a warrior.

She was fighting like someone who had already made peace with the end.

The Memory

As she moved, her mind flickered—

Back to a simpler time.

A younger version of herself, sitting alone on a rooftop, staring at a city that never noticed her existence.

She had lived her life on the edge.

No purpose. No anchor.

Until she met them.

Kazuki.

Aria.

The others.

For the first time… she had something that felt like belonging.

Rin smirked slightly as she dodged another strike.

"…Guess I got lucky in the end."

The Breaking Point

The Warden adapted again.

Faster. Stronger.

It began predicting her movements, forcing her back step by step.

Blood stained her arm.

Then her side.

Then her shoulder.

She didn't stop.

Couldn't stop.

Because she knew—

If she fell too soon…

They wouldn't make it.

"Come on…" she muttered, breathing heavier now. "Not yet…"

The Warden raised both arms—preparing a devastating strike.

Rin's eyes sharpened.

"…Now."

Final Technique

She surged forward.

Not retreating.

Not dodging.

Charging straight into the attack.

Her blades ignited—not with fire, not with magic…

But with pure will.

Every step cracked the ground beneath her.

Every heartbeat roared in her ears.

"This is it," she whispered.

The world slowed.

She leapt.

Spun.

And unleashed everything in a single, flawless strike.

"Silent Horizon."

The attack cut through the Warden's core.

For a moment—

Everything stopped.

Then—

The Warden shattered.

Its massive form collapsing into fragments of fading shadow.

The End

Rin landed softly.

Her blades slipped from her hands.

"…Heh," she breathed.

She had done it.

The path was clear.

But her body…

Wasn't moving anymore.

The wounds. The strain. The cost of that final attack.

She sank slowly to her knees.

The desert was quiet now.

Peaceful.

For the first time since the battle began.

Rin looked toward the distant Citadel.

"…Don't mess it up," she whispered.

Her vision blurred.

And with one last breath—

She smiled.

Elsewhere

Far ahead—

Kazuki suddenly stopped.

His chest tightened violently.

"…Rin."

Aria's hand gripped his.

She felt it too.

The silence.

The absence.

Neither of them said it out loud.

Because saying it…

Would make it real.

Cliffhanger

Behind them—

The shattered remains of the Warden…

Began to move again.

Slowly.

Silently.

Reforming.
