Novel Chapter
Kai stared down at Arlong for a long moment, expression unreadable.
"Human?" He tilted his head slightly. "Maybe. Maybe not."
Then his hand rose, fingers spreading wide toward Arlong's broken form.
His fist clenched.
BOOM.
Arlong exploded.
No scream. No final words. Just an instant detonation—flesh and bone erupting outward in a crimson burst that painted the sky. The blood mist hung in the air for a heartbeat, then drifted down like scarlet snow, settling across the ocean surface in delicate patterns.
It should have been horrifying.
Instead, it looked almost... beautiful. Ethereal. Like something out of a dream.
Nami stood frozen on the shore, eyes wide and glassy, staring at the space where Arlong had been.
He was gone.
Just... gone.
Eight years. Eight years of terror and pain and sleepless nights. Eight years of stealing and lying and surviving. Eight years under the shadow of those cold, shark-like eyes and that cruel, mocking laugh.
And now—
Her knees buckled.
She didn't even realize she was moving until she crashed into Kai's chest, hands fisting in his coat, and the sobs tore out of her like something breaking open inside.
Kai went still. His hand hovered awkwardly for a moment, then settled on her back, patting gently.
He had no idea what to say.
What could he say?
So he just stood there and let her cry.
It took a long time for Nami to stop shaking.
When she finally pulled back, her eyes were red and puffy, tear tracks still wet on her cheeks. She scrubbed at her face with her sleeve, took a deep, shuddering breath—
And grinned.
"Okay!" Her voice came out rough but fierce. "Starting today, I'm officially the navigator of Kai Mitarashi's crew!" She thrust a fist in the air. "And I'm going to map the entire world!"
Kai blinked. The shift in mood was whiplash-inducing.
Then Nami's eyes lit up with a different kind of fire—one Kai recognized immediately.
"Wait." She leaned forward, suddenly laser-focused. "If I'm part of your crew now, that means I'm a Marine, right?" Her grin turned sly. "And Marines get paid. Military stipends and everything."
Kai's lips twitched. "That's right."
"So..." Nami's fingers drummed together. "How much are we talking?"
"How much do you want?"
"Five hundred thousand—no, wait." Her eyes gleamed. "One million berries a month!"
She must have seen something in his expression, because she immediately launched into justification mode.
"I mean, for a beautiful and brilliant navigator like me, one million is a steal! You're getting an amazing deal here. Seriously. You should be thanking me for—"
"You sure?" Kai's smile was innocent. Too innocent. "Not going to change your mind?"
Nami hesitated. Something in his tone made her stomach twist.
"I... I'm sure. Why would I—"
"Commander." Kai turned to the adjutant standing nearby. "Make a note. Change Navigator Nami's military stipend from three million berries per month to one million."
Nami's brain screeched to a halt.
"Wait, WHAT!?"
The Commander saluted crisply. "Yes, Admiral Hakuryū!"
"Three million!?" Nami grabbed Kai's arm, shaking it desperately. "You were going to pay me three million and I just—I just—no! Take it back! I didn't mean it! Can we please go with your number instead!?"
Kai spread his hands, the picture of innocence. "But you asked for one million. I even double-checked with you." He shook his head sadly. "I can't just ignore your wishes, Nami. That would be disrespectful."
"AHHHHH!" Nami's wail of anguish echoed across the water.
Kai let her suffer for exactly ten seconds.
"Tell you what." He held up a finger. "Finish mapping the entire East Blue for me, and I'll bump you back up to three million. Deal?"
Nami's head snapped up, eyes blazing with renewed determination.
"Deal." Her voice was steel. "Three days. I'll have it done in three days."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "That's ambitious."
"I've spent eight years sailing every corner of this sea." Nami's grin turned sharp. "The only reason I haven't finished the map yet is because I refused to make one for Arlong. Trust me. Three days."
Three days later...
"Here!" Nami slapped a rolled parchment into Kai's hands with the pride of a cat presenting a dead mouse. "Complete East Blue nautical chart. Every island, every reef, every current. Perfect." She crossed her arms. "Now pay up."
Kai unrolled the chart slowly, eyes scanning the intricate lines and notations.
Loguetown. Fūsha Village. Syrup Village. Cocoyasi. Dozens more, all rendered in meticulous detail—coastlines, depth measurements, seasonal wind patterns, hidden hazards.
It was better than the official Marine charts.
"Nami." He looked up, genuinely impressed. "This is incredible work."
Her cheeks flushed pink. "I—well—obviously. I told you I was good."
Kai handed the chart to the Commander. "Make a copy for Headquarters. They'll want this."
"Yes, sir!"
Nami bounced on her heels. "So? Three million?"
"Three million," Kai confirmed. Then paused. "Actually, as a reward for exceptional work..." He smiled. "How about I take you to the Baratie?"
Nami's eyes went huge. "The sea restaurant!? The fancy one everyone talks about!?"
"That's the one. All-you-can-eat. My treat."
"YES!" Nami punched the air. "Three days of non-stop cartography—I am starving! I'm going to eat them out of business!"
The Commander stepped forward. "I'll assemble the crew immediately, sir. We can depart within—"
"No need." Kai waved him off. "I'm technically on vacation. You all deserve a break too." He glanced at Nami. "Just the two of us this time."
The Commander's face tightened with concern. "Sir, with respect, your safety—"
"I'm an Admiral." Kai's tone was dry. "If something comes up, you have a Den Den Mushi. I'll be fine."
"...Yes, sir."
The Baratie.
Even from a distance, the floating restaurant was impossible to miss.
The structure was massive—a ship the size of a small fortress, painted in bright colors with exaggerated fish-shaped figureheads at bow and stern. The whole thing looked like it had been designed by someone who couldn't decide between "elegant dining establishment" and "pirate warship," so they just built both.
Which, knowing the Baratie's reputation, was probably accurate.
"Whoa." Nami leaned over the side of their small boat, eyes wide. "It's even bigger than I thought!"
Kai steered them toward the docking platform. "The head chef is Zeff—used to be a pirate captain in the Grand Line. 'Red Leg' Zeff. Retired after losing his leg in a shipwreck."
"A pirate runs this place?"
"Reformed pirate. He and a kid survived on a rock for months with no food. After that..." Kai shrugged. "He decided to open a restaurant where no one would ever go hungry. His one rule: never waste food."
Nami's expression softened. "That's... actually kind of nice."
"It is." Kai tied off the boat. "Also, the whole ship transforms into a battle arena if customers get rowdy. So it's nice and entertaining."
Nami's grin returned full-force. "I like this place already."
