After the past Lin Ruo finished speaking, the scene suddenly fell silent. About ten seconds later, Amon chuckled softly:
"This is truly... an answer that doesn't surprise me at all."
He looked at Lin Ruo, His smile brightening a bit, and said, "I'm very much looking forward to seeing who Godfather will ultimately choose."
The past Lin Ruo frowned upon hearing this. He looked at Amon, wanting to say something but ultimately swallowed it back, only sighing and leaving a remark as He turned around:
"Amon, you should grow up."
The smile on Amon's lips stiffened. He looked at Lin Ruo's retreating figure, and for some unknown reason, His smile receded, eventually becoming expressionless.
The past Lin Ruo didn't care about Amon's reaction, only staring blankly at the Star in the sky.
It wasn't that He hadn't held expectations for Amon, or that He hadn't considered making this child, whom He had raised, the Lord of the Mysteries, His anchor. But repeated disappointments had long since worn away the Angel of Judgment's expectations. Now, His only hope for Amon was probably that this child would rein Himself in a bit and not cause any tragedies.
"Will you kill me?"
Amon's voice came from behind, His tone flat, without much emotional fluctuation. The past Lin Ruo was clearly not surprised by this. He knew Amon was asking about the future battle for the Lord of the Mysteries, and He didn't turn back to look at the other party, simply saying:
"I don't know."
"I will kill you."
Amon's voice came through, His tone still flat, as if He were saying, "The weather is nice today."
"I know."
The past Lin Ruo still showed no surprise, simply nodding casually. He finally bothered to turn and glance at Amon, saying:
"Provided you can do it."
Amon could certainly try to kill Him. He was always decisive in that regard, but He couldn't do it.
Even He Himself couldn't bury Himself, let alone Amon.
His only ultimate end was...
Thinking of those thoughts He shouldn't, the past Lin Ruo reined in His mind.
"Sometimes I'm truly curious, why do you insist on acting like a human when you are clearly the biggest monster? Is this also human nature?" Amon adjusted His monocle. He clearly wasn't completely ignorant of certain matters.
Or rather, even if He didn't understand as clearly as Adam, He would at least have some guesses, much like Medici.
"If I hadn't strived to live like a human, you wouldn't be sitting here chatting with me safely right now; you'd be one of my collections."
The past Lin Ruo glanced at Him, and with a casual wave of His left hand, a spatial door appeared. He clearly no longer wished to converse with Amon and stepped directly into the spatial door, leaving only one sentence:
"If you act out in front of me again, you're on your own."
The spatial door closed. The expressionless Amon watched it slowly vanish into the air, then suddenly twitched His lips, forming a slight smile:
"Courage and sacrifice... what's the use of such things?"
"Be it Father, Medici, or you, aren't all of you in your current predicament precisely because of such things?"
...
"Father, you've arrived."
On the other side of the spatial door, a voice, though restrained, carried a clear hint of pleasant surprise.
The speaker appeared to be in his twenties or thirties, with handsome features, a serious expression, hair of a unique Void Realm black with some white strands, and a pair of azure eyes radiating strangeness and mystery. It was young Bethel.
"Long time no see, young Bethel. It seems you've managed my library very well."
The past Lin Ruo first looked at young Bethel, then His gaze swept across the interior of the library, and He curled His lips, praising him.
"It is my duty to manage the books well for Father," young Bethel said modestly, but his mood was clearly a bit better. Then he seemed to notice something and spoke with some concern: "Father, your condition doesn't seem very good."
"Just gave Amon a good beating, need to rest a bit to stabilize my state." The past Lin Ruo said this while rubbing His temples.
When beating Amon, to teach Him a lesson, Lin Ruo naturally simulated Sequence 0 level power. Although the influence of using power on human nature was basically delayed and accumulated by Him using special methods, and wouldn't show immediate reactions, it still inevitably worsened His state a bit.
What the current Lin Ruo needed was rest.
This was also why He came here. Aside from the "Peach Blossom Spring," the library was the place where Lin Ruo could rest most peacefully.
"I have always cleaned Father's resting room. If Father needs it, he can use it now," young Bethel said quickly, clearly familiar with the routine.
"Mm." Lin Ruo responded, walking to His resting room with familiarity. But before entering, He remembered something and looked at young Bethel, saying:
"You still haven't changed that idea?"
Young Bethel paused, then showed a smile, which was rare on his usually serious face.
He said, "That is the mission I was born to fulfill; it is the meaning of my existence."
"But I, your creator, stopped believing that the moment you truly gained consciousness."
The past Lin Ruo said earnestly. He looked at young Bethel, who was mostly well-behaved but stubbornly unyielding on one particular matter, and said with a headache:
"We can find other ways to remove the corruption from Bethel; it doesn't have to be your sacrifice."
"Then has Father found it?" Young Bethel didn't argue, only asked.
"Not yet, but that's only temporary..." The past Lin Ruo wanted to say more, but He was interrupted by young Bethel.
"Father, you understand better than anyone that besides me, your most perfect creation, there is nothing else in this world that can completely remove the corruption from Mr. Bethel, that corruption from you."
As young Bethel spoke, His expression was very serious as He said:
"Since I was born for this, and I am willing to die for this, why does Father insist on struggling?"
"Let me proceed to my destined end, Father."
"You—" The past Lin Ruo looked at the serious young Bethel, and finally could only grit His teeth and curse, "Why are you so stubborn!"
"I think you and Amon are specifically here to torment me. One is single-mindedly avoiding sacrifice, unwilling to take responsibility, only wanting benefits. The other, no matter what I say, won't listen, only thinking of sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice. If I had known this would happen, I might as well have created a piece of char siu!"
He was probably truly angered, having just been annoyed by Amon for a while. Lin Ruo couldn't help but curse, His tone filled with a sense of disappointment.
"I think it's because I didn't do a good job when I created you, and now your brain is short-circuited like this. Amon too, if I had known He would be so mischievous, I wouldn't have taken Him in!"
Young Bethel quietly waited for Lin Ruo to finish cursing, looking completely obedient and accepting of the scolding. Then, meeting Lin Ruo's "terrifying" gaze, he spoke: "Does Father regret creating me?"
"No." Lin Ruo shook His head. He calmed His intense emotions from just now, looked at young Bethel, and said earnestly:
"It is precisely because I don't regret it that I cannot watch you sacrifice yourself, do you understand?"
