Chapter 147 - 139) You are the Great Sage.

...

{3rd Pov}

Natsuki Subaru carefully scanned the area around him, his eyes moving from one ruined corner to the next.

The entire place looked like a battlefield that had been mercilessly torn apart.

Shattered debris was scattered everywhere, the ground was uneven with cracks, and the very air seemed heavy with the aftermath of destruction.

He then turned his gaze toward the Ground Dragon.

The usually proud and dependable beast was trembling uncontrollably, its body quivering as though it had just witnessed the end of the world.

Subaru could tell right away what was going through its mind.

Ground Dragons weren't just big lizards — they were intelligent creatures, far smarter than their appearance suggested.

And this one had clearly realized the horrifying truth: all of this devastation, all of this overwhelming power, came from none other than Natsuki Subaru himself.

The moment Subaru's eyes met with the creature's, the Ground Dragon immediately flinched, lowering its head and bowing in submission, as if even looking him in the eye was too terrifying.

"…Great. Just great," Subaru muttered under his breath, rubbing the back of his neck. "Now I've gone and scared the living daylights out of a Ground Dragon. How am I supposed to live this down?"

As if terrorizing his loyal steed wasn't bad enough, another problem quickly came to mind. Subaru's expression twisted as he looked around at the wreckage again.

The road was completely obliterated, covered in rubble, scorched earth, and jagged cracks.

Even if the Ground Dragon wasn't scared stiff, there was still one big question.

"How the hell are we supposed to pull a carriage through this mess?!" he complained loudly, throwing his hands up.

Standing nearby, Zero — the so-called Great Sage, a version of Subaru himself pulled straight from another timeline — was watching the scene unfold with a wide, mischievous grin on his face.

"Why the hell are you grinning like that?" Subaru demanded, clearly irritated by Zero's strange expression.

"Nothing…" Zero tilted his head innocently, his grin refusing to fade, trying and failing to suppress a chuckle.

"Just did a little trolling."

"???" Subaru blinked in utter confusion, unable to comprehend what the other was talking about.

Subaru stared at him blankly. "...Trolling? Seriously? What the hell does that even mean in this situation?"

Zero just shrugged, looking completely unbothered.

Subaru sighed, rubbing his nose in frustration.

'Whatever. Best if I don't think too hard about it. If I try, my brain's gonna short-circuit.' he thought.

Zero clapped his hands together with far too much enthusiasm. "Anyway! Enough of that. The night is still young, and that means it's the perfect time to get moving. Our next destination is clear. Let's head straight for the Sin Archbishop and cut him down before the sun even thinks about rising."

But before he could take another step, Subaru suddenly grabbed him by the shoulder, stopping him in his tracks. His expression was far more serious now.

"Hold it. We need to talk. Right now," Subaru said firmly. His eyes briefly flicked toward Rem, who had been silently observing everything from a short distance away.

She tilted her head slightly, her expression unreadable, but Subaru quickly turned his attention back to Zero and leaned in closer.

"…In private."

Zero suddenly froze mid-step, his shoulders twitching as if he had just felt a chill run down his spine.

He then spun around dramatically and jabbed his finger at Subaru like he had caught him committing a crime.

"Don't tell me…" Zero said with exaggerated suspicion, his eyes narrowing.

"Don't you dare tell me you're about to confess your love to me! First of all, that's gay! Second of all, that's straight-up selfcest, and third—" he raised another finger for emphasis, "—there is no way in hell I'm crossdressing for you! And I sure as hell don't wanna see you try parading around as 'Natsuki Schwartz' either!"

Subaru's face twitched in irritation.

"You absolute idiot! Do you seriously think I'd pull something like that right now?! This is important!"

His sharp glare cut through the joking atmosphere, and for once, Zero's grin faltered.

"...Fine," Zero muttered at last.

His tone shifted, becoming serious.

With a casual flick of his hand, a powerful wind barrier materialized around them, sealing the two Subarus inside a bubble of silence.

The sounds of the night outside were instantly cut off, leaving only the faint hum of the swirling barrier.

"Alright," Zero said in a quieter, steadier voice. "Talk. What is it that you want from me?"

Subaru wasted no time.

He leaned in slightly and asked, "You still haven't told me why you're here. Why you're in this timeline at all."

For a moment, Zero didn't respond.

He just looked at Subaru silently, his expression unreadable.

Then, after a short pause, a crooked smile tugged at his lips.

"Heh… and here I was thinking you wouldn't bother asking. Honestly, I thought you'd just let it slide. Not to mention, it's kind of awkward timing, don't you think? Bringing up that question right after you've gone and killed the White Whale? Especially when the Sin Archbishop of Sloth could show up as soon as tomorrow?"

"I know…" Subaru admitted, his eyes narrowing with determination.

"But I can't just ignore it. I don't want to be selfish and pretend nothing's going on with you. You keep cracking jokes, trying to act like everything's hilarious or lighthearted… and yeah, that's something we both do a lot. It's our thing. But sometimes… sometimes we take it even further. We push the jokes to the point of absurdity."

Zero's smile faded completely this time, and silence settled between them.

They were both Natsuki Subaru, after all.

They both knew exactly why they acted the way they did. It wasn't just about being funny for the sake of it.

More often than not, their antics and ridiculous behavior were a way to draw attention, to make themselves seem approachable, to be liked.

But Subaru, the Subaru of this timeline, understood something deeper about Zero.

He could tell that Zero wasn't just fooling around for fun.

No—there was something more behind his behavior. After all, Subaru had lived long enough, suffered enough, and observed enough people to know the difference between someone being naturally playful and someone forcing themselves to be that way.

With over half a century of experience under his belt, Subaru had learned how to read people.

Which meant only one thing: Zero wasn't laughing because he wanted to. He was laughing because he needed to.

He was using jokes as a shield, as a distraction, a way to cope with something weighing heavily on him.

Coping with trauma, maybe? Subaru considered the idea.

But then he shook his head. If Zero really was traumatized, he wouldn't be so flimsy about it.

He wouldn't be so weak-willed. That wasn't how he carried himself.

No… this wasn't weakness. This was deflection.

Zero wasn't trying to bury his trauma—he was trying to keep his mind occupied, to stop himself from thinking about something else entirely.

Of course, Subaru had no hard proof for this conclusion. It was speculation, nothing more.

But deep down, he knew he had hit the mark.

"You're correct," Zero finally admitted, his voice calm but carrying the weight of something long hidden.

"The reason I developed this magic in the first place was simple… I wanted to find a way to return to Earth."

Subaru's eyes shot wide open at those words.

He immediately understood the implication, his breath catching in his throat.

"Y-You mean… you wanted to go back so you could meet your parents again?"

Zero smiled softly, almost nostalgically, and nodded. "Yes. That's exactly it. No matter how much of a disappointment I thought I was, no matter how much I gave up on myself, they never once gave up on me. They kept believing in me, right until the end. Think about it—how must they be feeling right now? Their only child just vanished without a trace, gone forever. Do you really think there's a parent out there who could just hate their child for that? No. There isn't. Parents may get angry, they may be strict, but hate? Never."

Subaru's mouth opened, but no words came out.

His chest tightened, and for a moment he couldn't speak at all.

He lowered his gaze, eyes glistening as unwanted memories surfaced.

His thoughts drifted to Rigel, his son, and their last meeting.

The sharp words, the heavy emotions… Even though Rigel had later written a letter to apologize, he never got the chance to look his father in the eyes again, and thus Rigel never met him again.

And Spica, his precious little daughter… she hadn't been by his side during his final moments either.

He never got to see her smile one last time.

But even so, he was grateful for them, proud of them, and satisfied with what little time he had.

At last, in those fleeting final days, he had come to understand—truly understand—what his own parents must have felt toward him.

"…Yeah," Subaru muttered, his voice trembling.

A bittersweet chuckle escaped his lips as he quickly wiped away the tears forming at the corners of his eyes.

"Yeah, I really am such a damn fool."

Zero didn't respond right away.

He stood silently, giving Subaru a moment to breathe, before continuing in a steady tone.

"This magic of mine—it's still incomplete. The most it can do is let me travel across timelines. At best, I can jump between different branches of reality. But traveling to an entirely different universe? That's far beyond me. I didn't even plan on using this spell for timeline hopping in the first place. Honestly, it was never supposed to work like that. The whole thing was a complete accident."

Subaru tilted his head, raising a suspicious eyebrow. "An accident, huh?"

Zero nodded. "Yes. It was Reina who triggered it by mistake. One wrong move, and before either of us realized it, we were pulled apart and scattered across different timelines. Now I'm wandering, moving from one distorted world to the next, desperately trying to find her."

"Reina?…" Subaru repeated the unfamiliar name slowly, his face twisting in confusion.

Then, after a second, his eyes widened.

"Wait. Don't tell me you mean Reinhardt? As in that Reinhardt?"

Zero's grin returned instantly, stretching from ear to ear.

He looked way too amused by Subaru's reaction.

"Bingo. Think of Reinhardt, multiply his strength by ten, then flip his gender. Make him into a gorgeous girl with long, fiery crimson hair and eyes so blue they could put the ocean to shame. That's Reina. My timeline's Sword Saint."

Subaru's jaw dropped so fast it was a miracle it didn't hit the floor.

He looked utterly gobsmacked. "WHAT?! Are you serious?! A female Reinhardt?! Damn it, that's—no, sorry, but that's way too weird for me to even picture right now!" He shook his head furiously, trying to scrub the mental image out of his brain.

Then, after a pause, his expression froze again. "…Wait a damn second. Don't tell me… there's a female version of me somewhere out there too?"

Zero's grin only grew wider, looking downright mischievous now. "Oh, of course there might be. With how many timelines exist, the odds are practically guaranteed. Just imagine it: Emilia as a boy, and you as a girl. The tragic otome heroine and her dashing male lead, caught up in a story of love, fate, and despair! What a heart-wrenching romance that would be!"

Subaru visibly shuddered as an uncomfortable chill ran down his spine.

Just the mere thought of a reversed dynamic between himself and Emilia made his stomach twist.

He raised his hands in front of him, waving frantically as if to push the thought away.

"Don't say another word about it! Seriously! Knowing my luck, if there really is a timeline like that, then I'd definitely end up as some pitiful otome heroine who keeps stumbling into every single bad ending first! That's exactly the kind of crap that would happen to me!"

(A/N: Emilio, Adelheid, and Natsuki Subaru… LMAO!)

Zero, unable to contain himself, chuckled at Subaru's meltdown.

But Subaru didn't stay flustered for long—his expression softened, his eyes narrowing with a rare seriousness.

"You love her, don't you?" Subaru asked quietly, his tone more statement than question.

The answer came immediately, without a single moment of hesitation.

"More than anything," Zero replied, his voice firm and absolute.

Subaru's lips curled into a faint smile.

He could see it clearly—the exact same unwavering devotion he himself carried for Rem reflected in Zero's golden eyes.

That kind of love was undeniable.

"In that case, you should go," Subaru said, his voice low but resolute.

"Don't waste another second. Not even a single minute of delay will do her any good. The fact that you even stopped here to help me already says more than enough. That's enough for me. Don't worry about me."

He wasn't a scientist.

He wasn't some world-class magician.

But Subaru's brain, stuffed full of endless otaku theories and time-travel tropes, understood one simple thing: every second counted.

Zero's expression tightened, doubt flickering across his face.

"Are you sure about this? The Sin Archbishop of Sloth is still alive. He isn't someone to take lightly. He's a formidable opponent, one who can't be underestimated."

But Subaru didn't budge. He didn't retreat. He stood firm.

"I'm scared of him," Subaru admitted, his voice trembling only slightly as he clenched his fists.

"Every time I remember what he did… what he did to the villagers, to Rem… I feel that fear digging into me again. It makes me sick just thinking about it." He paused, biting his lip, then continued. "I'm not afraid of dying anymore. I lost that fear a long time ago. What terrifies me is the thought of the people I love being taken from me. That's the only thing I can't stand."

Zero remained silent, listening carefully.

"Will I win? I don't know," Subaru continued, his voice raw with honesty.

"Will the outcome be better this time? Or will I just be forced to die again, and again, and again? I don't have the answer to that. But…" Subaru raised his head and met Zero's gaze directly, staring into those glowing golden eyes.

"…It's fine," Subaru said, his voice steady now.

"Because this time, I'm not walking blind. I had someone guide me toward the right path. Instead of crying over every loss, instead of breaking down every time I fail, I've decided I'm going to live. For the people I've already lost, I'll carry their will with me. And this time—" his voice hardened with determination, "—this time I want answers. I want a conclusion to this story, one that's on my terms."

Subaru paused for a moment, letting his words settle in the air.

Then, with a small smirk, he added, "And you, Great Sage or not… I don't see some untouchable, all-knowing being when I look at you. What I see is someone who's still just as human as me, someone who's worried sick about the person they love, no matter how much strength they have. And because of that—" Subaru jabbed a finger at Zero's chest, "—I believe in you. I believe you'll be able to save her."

Zero blinked, caught off guard by Subaru's words, his grin faltering into something softer, something more human.

"After all," Subaru said with a confident smile, "I might just be plain old Natsuki Subaru… but you, you're the so-called Great Sage."

Zero raised an eyebrow, listening to the dramatic delivery, and thought to himself with mild annoyance, 'Damn it… so this is how other people must feel whenever I start spouting nonsense speeches? No wonder everyone looks at me like I'm insane.'

"So go on, brat," Subaru continued with a cheeky grin, pointing his thumb over his shoulder like he was sending him off on a quest.

"Hurry up and reunite with your sword princess already."

Zero smirked. "Don't worry, grandpa. When I get married, I'll make sure to bring my kids over to meet you."

Subaru's eyebrow twitched violently at the word grandpa. "FUCK YOU."

"I only fuck my wife," Zero replied instantly without missing a beat.

Both of them broke into loud, genuine laughter, the kind that shook off the tension that had been weighing on the air moments before.

For just a short while, it almost felt like they were simply two idiots bantering instead of versions of the same person shouldering heavy burdens.

Once their laughter settled, Zero's expression grew serious again.

He reached out and tapped Subaru's forehead lightly with two fingers.

A sudden jolt ran through Subaru's skull as fragments of information began flooding into his brain. Zero had transferred knowledge directly into his mind using his psychic abilities.

The information was massive—lists of every Sin Archbishop, detailed descriptions of each Witch, and explanations of the terrifying powers they possessed.

It was a treasure trove of intel, the kind of knowledge Subaru would have to die dozens of time to gather it himself.

"This will help you survive," Zero said firmly. "Don't waste it."

Subaru steadied himself, shaking his head to clear the buzzing sensation as the new data settled in. "Tch… couldn't you have uploaded this in a less headache-inducing way?"

"Not my problem," Zero shrugged, then added more sincerely, "One more thing. If by some accident and the weird way time-travel behaving shenanigans, Reina actually ends up teleporting into your timeline's future, I want you to welcome her as a guest. Look after her for me. The chances of it happening are ridiculously low, but if it does… she'll need someone she can trust."

"Yeah, yeah, leave it to me," Subaru replied, waving his hand dismissively but with an undertone of sincerity.

"If your fiery sword princess actually shows up, I'll make sure she's treated well."

Zero nodded, satisfied, and finally lowered the wind barrier.

The silence spell dissolved like mist, and the noises of the night came rushing back in—distant insects, the faint creak of the carriage, the soft rustling of trees.

"By the way," Zero said casually, his golden eyes flicking off to the side. "Rem's glaring daggers at us. Pretty sure she's jealous."

"What?" Subaru blinked, then turned his head quickly. Sure enough, Rem was standing nearby.

The moment his eyes landed on her, she snapped her head upward and pretended to stare intently at the stars, her cheeks faintly red.

Subaru's face flushed bright red in embarrassment.

"Ugh… seriously? This is embarrassing…" he muttered.

"She's actually jealous just because I was talking and laughing with someone else…"

Zero snorted. "Don't act surprised. You're her whole world."

Subaru rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

The ridiculous part was, Rem didn't even know the truth—that the man she was jealous of wasn't just some guy.

He was another Natsuki Subaru, pulled from a different timeline entirely.

And that somehow made the whole situation even more absurd

"Don't worry about it too much," Zero said casually with a shrug, though there was a faint sigh hidden in his voice.

"My wife gets jealous too… even when I'm just playing with little kids."

Subaru froze. His entire face twisted in horror.

"Wait, WHAT?! Are you telling me the Great Sage actually has to deal with sage-level problems like that?! Man… I can't even process this. That's way too advanced for me!"

Zero smirked but didn't reply, clearly enjoying Subaru's horrified reaction.

Before Subaru could make another sarcastic remark, a new voice suddenly echoed from within Zero, cutting straight into the conversation.

"Remember to get this Betty out of that stupid library already!"

Subaru's eyes widened. He recognized that voice instantly.

"If she tries to be a brat, you punish her!" the voice continued, brimming with sass and authority.

It was unmistakably Beatrice, speaking directly from inside Zero's soul space.

Subaru scratched the back of his head awkwardly, glancing around as if Beatrice might physically pop out at any second.

"Uh… well, I'm pretty sure if I actually tried to discipline her, I'd be the one ending up punished, not the other way around. But still…"

He raised his thumb proudly, giving an exaggerated grin.

"I'll give it a shot, Beako. I'll see if I can make my Beatrice turn out just as cute as you!"

"…I suppose that's acceptable," Beatrice replied with her usual haughty tone, though the faint warmth in her voice gave away her satisfaction.

Subaru chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Yeah, that definitely sounded like you. No mistaking it. Man it had been ages."

Zero met with Rem one final time to exchange parting words, then, after sending a carefully prepared message to the Dragon Tablet he had already hacked into beforehand, he activated its power and successfully teleported Subaru, Rem, and their entire carriage safely outside the massive crater before making his own departure.

Just before disappearing, however, he called out with a grin, his voice echoing in Subaru's ears. "Oh, by the way! I left three surprises for you! You'll find them soon enough!"

And with those baffling parting words that left Subaru completely dumbfounded, Zero vanished from the scene, leaving nothing but confusion—and maybe a headache—behind.

Meanwhile, inside the Royal Castle of Lugunica, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

All of the high-ranking nobles, the Royal Knights, and the wise men of the kingdom were gathered together, engaged in a heated and serious debate.

The discussion revolved around the punishment of Wilhelm, and more importantly, Felix—something that weighed heavily on Crusch's heart, filling her with visible regret.

In the middle of this grim meeting, the Dragon Tablet suddenly flared to life once again, its ancient runes glowing with ominous brilliance.

[The Great Sage has left the world]

The words appeared without warning, leaving the room in shocked silence.

Everyone was once again forced to interpret and decipher the cryptic message, trying to unravel its meaning and the implications it carried for their kingdom.

At the same time, Subaru, who had been teleported far away, found himself standing on a remote mountain peak.

From his soul space, his spirit Gloria spoke up in a concerned but inquisitive tone.

'Father, didn't you already give him two gifts? The first one was connected to his second wife, and the second was tied to the weapon you forged. You made that blade using this world's Yin Sword and Life Sword, combined with this world's Subaru's own blood and Od. So then… what exactly is left?'

Beatrice, who had also been watching carefully from within the soul space, immediately joined in.

'Betty has a guess. Could it be that the third surprise is about you revealing to those so-called wise men and nobles that Subaru himself is the Great Sage? Betty saw it, you know. You linked with the Dragon Tablet to the Royal Castle and communicated with them just now. Subaru will be in for quite the shock when someone from the Capital suddenly shows up looking for him.'

Zero, however, simply smirked faintly. "That? No, that wasn't the third gift. That was just me fooling around a little, doing a bit of trolling, and throwing in a warning while I was at it. The real third gift… that's still waiting. And I'll warn you now—get ready, because I might not survive it this time."

His voice turned grave, the lightheartedness fading as he prepared himself for what was to come.

Not long after, Subaru was on his knees, panting heavily.

Blood streamed from his nose, dripping onto the ground below.

His aura flickered weakly, his fluctuations unstable and fading fast, while all of his spirits had been forced out into the open.

Beatrice and Aqua were frantically pouring their magic into him, desperately trying to stabilize his collapsing state.

"Why did you do something so reckless?!" Gloria shouted in his mind, her voice filled with fury and worry.

"You could have actually died this time! We don't even know if your Return by Death ability will still activate properly!"

Zero coughed but gave a faint laugh. "Yeah… I know. This was selfish of me."

"Betty doesn't like this! Not at all!" Beatrice's voice cracked as tears welled in her eyes.

"Even if Subaru can Return by Death, Betty refuses to accept him dying in front of her! It's unforgivable! In fact—!" Her words were cut short by her own sobs as she continued channeling healing magic into him, but the results weren't showing.

His body wasn't healing, and her frustration mounted.

Subaru smiled weakly, lifting his trembling hand to pat her head gently.

"I couldn't let him go through that kind of pain. He would've never recovered from losing his children. And besides… there was no guarantee he'd ever get the same children again, even with a different timeline. I had to do something."

Then, forcing his battered body to move, he called upon one of his authorities.

Dark energy flared as he invoked the Authority of Gluttony.

With it, he devoured the mana from the surrounding air, greedily pulling it into himself.

The raw energy was converted into both aura and ki, flowing through him and repairing the cracks in his soul. Slowly but surely, his damaged essence knit itself back together.

Not only did he heal, but his strength surged, his body and soul both restored to their prime condition.

Gloria and Beatrice, overwhelmed with relief, immediately embraced him tightly.

The other spirits followed suit, their glowing orbs of mana clustering around him, wrapping him in warmth like a protective blanket.

After apologizing over and over again, Subaru finally managed to ease their anger.

The spirits eventually forgave him, though they all understood that being angry at him forever would solve nothing.

It was far better to focus on what they could do to actually help him in the future.

As the spirits settled their thoughts, Sylphy, his loyal wind spirit, floated quietly beside him.

Her small form glimmered faintly, and she made a silent vow in her heart.

'Sylphy… will protect Daddy. No matter what.'

As Subaru and Rem continued their journey, their carriage raced quickly down the uneven roads, heading straight toward Roswaal's domain.

The wheels rattled and shook, the ground dragon straining as it pulled them along at full speed. Subaru leaned forward from the driver's seat, determination clear on his face, while Rem sat beside him, her eyes constantly scanning the surroundings for threats.

They were moving with urgency, every second counting.

Far away from their path, in a completely different place, the atmosphere was utterly different.

The wind howled violently, whipping across the land like an unstoppable blade.

Trees were ripped apart, their trunks splitting and branches scattering into the air like broken twigs. Vegetation was flattened in its wake, and even massive boulders cracked under the sheer force of the gale.

It was as if nature itself had surrendered before the storm.

At the very center of this destructive wind stood a lone figure.

She was breathtakingly beautiful, with long white hair that cascaded down her back, strands of lime-green weaving through it like threads of gemstone.

Her face was flawless, carrying an otherworldly charm that went far beyond human standards of beauty.

She wore a pure white kimono, the silk fabric clinging to her body and accentuating her curves.

Every proportion of her form was perfect, her figure striking yet elegant.

But it was her eyes that stood out the most.

They shimmered with an intensity that mixed longing, tenderness, and unmistakable obsession, all aimed at one single person.

Her lips curved into a smile, and she whispered in a voice heavy with affection.

"Su-chan… Just wait a little longer. Your Tia is coming. No matter what, I'll be by your side soon."

Elsewhere, in a different corner of the world, silence dominated the atmosphere.

There, a sword rested, its blade gleaming faintly in the darkness.

A strange, ominous light pulsed from it, flickering with a life of its own.

The weapon gave off the feeling that it wasn't just forged metal, but something that possessed its own will, its own destiny.

It waited quietly, patiently, as though anticipating the moment its true master would finally appear and claim it.

And while the Great Sage had departed from this world, the tale of Natsuki Subaru—the boy who chose to walk down the path of Sloth—was far from over.

This was the same boy who had been torn away from his home, abandoned to a foreign world with no way back.

The boy who had already lost precious time that could never be regained.

The boy who had lost beloved people he would never see again.

The boy who carried memories that could not be remade.

Yet despite all of that, he refused to break. He refused to give up.

Many challenges still lay in front of him, obstacles that would test both his will and his resolve.

But this time, no matter what stood in his way, no matter how much suffering awaited him, Natsuki Subaru swore he would reach the ending he truly desired.

Even if it meant overturning the laws of the world itself.

Even if it meant turning the entire world upside down.

His other world's journey is starting from zero, again.

To be continued...
