c154: Branding of Laws, Activate Hidden Talents!!
The hazy pink-red scroll of psychic text suddenly released a dazzling light. Ash instinctively tried to withdraw his hand, but a mysterious force held it in place with unshakable pressure. He had no choice but to close his eyes. When he opened them again, the psychic contract had vanished. In its place, etched on the back of his right hand where he had made contact with the scroll—were two softly glowing characters in radiant pink.
These two runes looked uncannily similar to the shape of Unown, though clearly more ancient primordial even. Ash couldn't read them in the conventional sense, but as he stared at the glyphs, meaning bloomed in his mind, as though whispered by a force beyond comprehension.
"Mew..." Ash murmured. The instant he spoke the word, the surrounding time-space twisted dramatically. The shifting of dimension, the warping of light and shadow it all reversed with dizzying speed, and Ash's consciousness snapped back to reality from the strange, dark space.
"Mi~ Signing a divine contract isn't all that hard. I still don't get why Ho-Oh and Lugia always make it sound so dangerous. 'One mistake and you'll sleep forever,' 'Lose focus and your brain turns to jelly,' blah blah blah," Mew huffed as he floated nearby, pouting slightly, his forepaws under his chin as he eyed the newly formed Law Brand on Ash's hand.
"Mi~ Maybe it is hard for most, but 277, the reincarnation of my old friend, handled it like a natural. Ash is truly special," Mew continued, his voice tinged with nostalgia and pride.
"Mi~ Hehe!! After so many years, the Pokémon world has finally birthed another true Psychic... and he just happens to be my psychic. Mr. Mew's chosen!" The pink feline swirled playfully in midair, beaming with delight.
Looking at Ash, who had just completed the Divine Contract, Mew's face radiated genuine joy.
"Hnn...!" Ash slowly opened his eyes, gazing up at the bright blue sky. Puffy white clouds drifted across a sea of open meadows and wildflower-strewn bushes. His body felt heavier than usual, like he'd just finished a long training session with Sir Aaron's spirit. He shook his head, slightly dizzy.
"Mi~ Ash, you're finally awake. You took just over an hour to complete the signing... not bad! As expected from the one Lord Mew approves of!" Mew circled Ash twice, nodding with satisfaction.
Now that his body had fully landed and his feet were grounded again, Ash felt a sense of calm settling in. The surreal intensity of the contract faded into memory, replaced by a quiet hum of psychic warmth.
Ash ignored Mew's chatty rambling for the moment the mythical Pokémon's level of tsundere sarcasm rivaled even Gary's worst days. Instead, he raised his right hand to check if the mysterious characters were still there. Sensing his intent, the markings shimmered back into view two ancient glyphs glowing gently in pink, matching the same characters carved by the psychic contract back in the void.
"Mew, is this your name?" Ash asked curiously, holding up his hand toward the floating Pokémon.
"Mi~ Nope!" Mew replied playfully. "Mew is my name, yes, but what's on your hand isn't me, it's something much more important."
"That," Mew said proudly, "is a Law Imprint. A law born from my essence, forged from the fusion of the Law of Mind and the Law of Soul. It exists between illusion and reality. This brand is my recognition of you. That imprint is the living proof that you've formed a psychic bond with a godlike being."
Ash blinked, stunned. The psychic contract didn't just mark him it elevated him.
"I won't go into all the specifics right now," Mew added, crossing his stubby little arms and puffing out his chest, "but here's the basic benefit: With the Mew Law Imprint, your Wave Aura cultivation rate will increase by at least five to ten times."
His face nearly sparkled with pride.
"Increase my wave power training by five to ten times? That's incredible," Ash said, amazed.
Of the two types of psychic abilities Ash had inherited Viridian Power and Wave Aura—the former was more support-oriented. Even its advanced form, "Will Enhancement," mainly focused on amplifying his Pokémon's strength, not his own battle capabilities.
However, the power of aura or waveguide was fundamentally different from Ash's other psychic talents. Unlike the Viridian Power, which mostly enhanced his connection with Pokémon and nature, aura could bolster Ash's own combat ability. Over the past few weeks, while helping wild Pokémon in the forest recover from various injuries, Ash had unknowingly activated more than five aura waves within his body. Now that he had learned the Mew Law Imprint could enhance aura cultivation, his heart swelled with excitement.
"This imprint of the law can only boost my aura training, right? It doesn't help with the Viridian Power too?" Ash asked, eyes gleaming with a mix of curiosity and hope.
"Mi~ So you humans call it 'Viridian Power' or sometimes the 'Power of the Eternal Rock,' huh?" Mew giggled, floating in a lazy loop.
"Any supernatural energy, when cultivated to its absolute limit, will eventually evolve into a Law Force. Aura what you call waveguide is born of the soul, so its ultimate evolution is the Law of the Soul."
"But the Law of Mew is born from the intersection of the Law of Mind and the Law of Soul. That's why this imprint naturally enhances your aura training it's aligned."
Mew paused for effect, then continued with a shrug. "Viridian Power, on the other hand, is rooted in nature itself. Only Law Imprints like the Law of Forest, the Law of Life, or the Law of Rebirth can amplify its cultivation."
"I see…" Ash nodded thoughtfully, not too troubled. After all, the Viridian Power had always grown through acts of empathy and restoration, and not through direct training. By selflessly healing Pokémon, Ash could increase his affinity with nature. Compared to structured practice, he was already quite satisfied with how fast it had grown.
"Mi~ I've been out of the World Tree long enough," Mew said, stretching mid-air. "I'll return and resume my work there. But remember, if you ever need me, just focus on the law mark I'll hear you."
"Oh, and one more thing." Mew's eyes twinkled mischievously. "As your patron deity and your friend it wouldn't be right for us to part without a welcome gift. So I'm giving you ten minor blessings. Let's start with the first."
He extended a tiny pink paw and pointed it toward Froakie, who had been quietly observing at Ash's feet. A beam of shimmering red-pink light shot from Mew's paw and wrapped itself around Froakie like a protective veil.
"Mew, what are you doing?!" Ash exclaimed, scooping Froakie into his arms with sudden concern, checking it from head to toe for injuries.
"Mi~ Look at you panic, like I'm gonna roast your Froakie for dinner or something," Mew teased, rolling his eyes in dramatic fashion. "Froakie's body has the innate potential to adapt its Constitution Ability. Or in your human terms Hidden Ability: Protean. Just now, I infused a spark of the Law of Mew into its core and helped awaken that dormant ability."
Ash paused, letting the explanation sink in. "So that's what it was…" he sighed in relief, holding Froakie close.
