c141: Friendship Doubles, Zhina Combination!!
"The Pokémon Summer Camp has come to a close before we even realized it. Over the past two weeks, many experiences unfolded some joyful, others challenging but I believe they will all become lasting memories for each of you."
"Throughout this two-week summer camp, we've completed a total of nine major activities. It brings me great joy to see how each of you has steadily grown through your participation whether in your skills, your confidence, or your teamwork."
"I hope that after the Pokémon Summer Camp concludes, and you each return to your hometowns and regular routines, you'll still carry with you the spirit you showed here."
"Stay positive. Stay optimistic. Don't retreat when faced with challenges, and don't cower in the face of adversity!" Professor Oak's gaze swept across the rows of young Trainers assembled on the camp's raised platform their once-childish faces now showing the first signs of maturity and resolve.
Student A: "Yes!!"
Student Z: "Yes!!"
Their voices rang out with energy and unity, a sign of how far they had come since the camp began.
"That's the spirit! Young Trainers should carry such an attitude wherever they go."
"Do you remember what I told you when camp first began? That when two unfamiliar Trainers meet, they can forge bonds strong friendships through Pokémon battles?"
Professor Oak smiled as he looked across the crowd.
"So, tell me… how do those same Trainers say goodbye when their paths are about to diverge?"
Student A: "With a Pokémon battle!!"
Student Z: "Pokémon battle!!"
The entire group of campers at the open training field answered in cheerful unison.
"Exactly!"
"But remember this: at the beginning of this camp, your battles were one-on-one each of you standing alone against another. Yet now, after two weeks of living, learning, and growing together, none of you are alone anymore."
"That's why, on this final day, before the summer camp officially ends, we're holding one last activity a tenth and final assessment. But more importantly, it's also your farewell event as Trainers."
"The 'Friendship Doubles Match'!!"
"Through these double battles, you'll partner with a fellow Trainer you've grown close to and face another duo. It's not just a test of battle skill—it's a celebration of trust, communication, and unity!"
"The rule of the final competition is this," Professor Oak began, addressing the assembled campers in front of the dam near the forest camp. "Students from different huts will form teams of two. With 98 students total, we'll have 49 pairs. Just like on the first day, you'll challenge other teams freely."
"Each pair must challenge at least five other teams. A win earns 4 points, a draw earns 2, and a loss gives 0. That means each team can earn a maximum of 20 points today. Points will be split equally between teammates."
"These are the general rules. Is everything clear?" Professor Oak looked over the students with his usual hearty smile.
Student A: "Clear!!"
Student Z: "Clear!!"
"Good! Now, go and find the person from another hut you most want to team up with. This is your last chance to deepen the friendships you've made during this camp. Make it count!"
…
As Professor Oak finished speaking, the forest camp filled with excited chatter as students rushed to form their final teams. Since the requirement was to team up with someone from a different hut, most campers buzzed with anticipation. Still, Ash, Serena, and their close circle had already made up their minds.
Even though Xiaochun and Goh had withdrawn from the summer camp earlier, and Tierno was following specific orders, he had built a strong friendship with Tatsuya over the past two weeks and naturally formed a team with him.
Ash and his group, who had grown closer over the course of their adventures and training, didn't hesitate. They simply exchanged glances and formed their teams without needing a word.
As the other campers struggled to finalize their duos, Ash and his friends had already lined up to register.
"Once you've picked your partner, come to me for registration. You're also free to name your team," Professor Oak said from beside the camp platform.
Ash × Serena: "Zhina Combination"
Gary × Leaf (Blue/Green in manga continuity): "True New Siblings"
Shauna × Trevor: "Performer and Photographer"
Tierno × Tatsuya: "Beauty and the Beast"
It took some students longer to team up, but within ten minutes, all 49 pairs had been registered.
"I now declare the final event of the XXth Pokémon Summer Camp Professor Oak's Laboratory Special Session: the Friendship Doubles Challenge officially open!!"
Ash was quick to act. "Gary, Tierno, you guys wait for your round. Serena and I are heading to the field first." He motioned to Serena, and the pair walked toward the battle court under the morning sun.
"Wow!! Ash and Serena are going up first! That's the strongest combination in the whole camp."
"I wish I could be Serena she always gets to be his partner…"
"I want to be Ash's teammate!"
"Huh? Why does everyone want Ash? Am I the only one who wants to team up with Serena instead?"
"Ash is super strong and handsome, and Serena's both beautiful and kind. They're like a perfect duo golden boy and jade girl. And they're seriously strong in battle."
"Exactly! Serena's been second place in the Student Ranking Scores almost the entire camp."
"Don't act like that's all her doing. If Ash teamed up with me, I'd be second too."
"Ugh, such sour grapes. Sure, Ash helped her, but Serena is no pushover. Out of everyone here, she's definitely in the top five."
Ash and Serena's appearance together set off another wave of excited whispers among the students. Their popularity was undeniable.
Ash, unfazed by the noise around them, turned to Serena. "Nervous?"
Serena, standing beside him in her red cap and matching boots, shook her head confidently. "Not nervous. But Ash… are you really planning to fight five matches in a row, like you did during the open challenge?"
Gone was the timid girl from the beginning of camp. These two weeks had transformed Serena. With Ash guiding her, she had trained hard, battled fiercely, and matured into someone both confident and determined.
"Why, are you scared?" Ash grinned, teasing her.
"Not one bit." Serena answered firmly, eyes gleaming. "If that's what you want to do, I'll be by your side. No matter how many matches we need to fight."
The words swelled in her heart, bubbling with emotions she had long buried.
"Great!!" Ash said, clearly impressed by Serena's resolve. "Then we'll go all out—five battles, back-to-back. Let's show them what a real team looks like, and end this camp the same way we started it with a bang!"
He turned and shouted across the field, "So who's brave enough to come up and be our first opponents? This is your last chance before the summer camp ends!!"
