Nyx was eventually forced to sit at his desk, facing the pile of volumes taller than he was, and sighed grudgingly. He propped his face up with one hand, tapping his fingertips absently on the desktop and occasionally flipping through the pages, but Ellis knew that he wasn't even reading the contents.
Ellis didn't press, he knew Nyx's personality - the more he pushed him, the more he'd push back.He just stood quietly, looking down and flipping through his own book, as if he was completely oblivious to Nyx's resentment.
After a while, Nyx finally couldn't help but speak, "Hey, Ellis."
Ellis: "..."
Nyx trailed off, as if trying to get attention with this boredom, "Ellis..."
Ellis finally looked up at him coldly, "Yes?"
Nyx's eyes rolled back and he smiled innocently, "Mentor-sama, I have a question."
Ellis didn't put down the book in his hand, just said indifferently, "Ask."
Nyx cocked his head and seemed to think hard for a moment before speaking, "What would you do if I suddenly died here today?"
Ellis's fingers paused imperceptibly.
He closed the book and looked up at Nyx, his tone still calm and rational, "You wouldn't die."
Nyx blinked, a wry smile hanging at the corner of his mouth, "Are you sure?I'm a demon, and demons die in many more ways than you humans."
Ellis' gaze sank, "What are you trying to say?"
Nyx sighed and shook his head with feigned regret, "You're such a boring person, when someone asks a question like that, shouldn't they first express words of concern like 'you won't die' or 'I won't let you die' or something like that?"
Ellis didn't answer, just looked at him quietly, as if waiting for him to finish the conversation himself.
Nyx propped up his face and sighed quietly, "Never mind, I won't tease you."He looked down at the book on his desk, a playful glint in his eyes, "Actually, I was just wondering, what am I in your world?"
Ellis frowned slightly, "What are you talking about?"
Nyx cocked his head and gave an impish grin, "I'm your contracted demon, and you're my summoner. But beyond that?"
There was silence in the air for a split second.Ellis didn't answer, and Nyx didn't push, he just stared at Ellis with interest, as if waiting for an answer that would satisfy him.
But in the end, Ellis just said faintly, "Don't think too much, and focus on copying the book."
Nyx blinked, then burst out laughing."Fine, fine."He shrugged indifferently, finally dutifully picking up his quill and starting to copy, "That's cold, Mentor Ellis."
Ellis didn't respond again, he just lowered his head and continued to flip through his books. But he knew that Nyx's question just now was not just a casual question.
Nyx was testing. And Ellis, likewise, did not give an answer.
Though Nyx was scribbling with his head down, Ellis could sense that his mind wasn't even on it.The quill rustled on the parchment, pausing occasionally, clearly the man was lost in thought.Instead of saying anything right away, Ellis stood by the bookshelf and flipped through an ancient tome, pretending not to notice Nyx's little gesture.
Nyx was obviously testing his boundaries. Finally, the tip of the pen paused, and Nyx glanced up at Ellis, seeing that the other man was still focused on the pages, and quietly moved his finger. An almost imperceptible strand of black magic flowed from his fingertips and gently wrapped itself around the candlestick on the desk, attempting to turn the flame silently into a strange bluish-purple color.
However, just at the moment the flame was about to change color, Ellis' voice rang out coldly, "Nyx."
Nyx's fingers froze and he quickly pulled his magic back, pretending that nothing had happened and continuing to scribble. He even shrugged his shoulders in an innocent manner, "What's wrong?I didn't do anything."
Ellis closed the book in his hand and walked over to the desk, looking down at Nyx, "What were you thinking?"
Nyx looked up and smiled an innocent, harmless smile, "Reflecting on my mistakes, of course."
Ellis looked at him coldly, clearly not convinced.
