Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7 - THE SPARK WITHIN DESPAIR

The first thing Gabriel felt when his consciousness clawed its way back was pain. Not the sharp sting of a single wound, but a heavy, crushing agony that spread through every bone, every muscle, every nerve in his body. His eyelids twitched, struggling against the weight of exhaustion, before finally parting.

The world that greeted him was dim and blurred. Moonlight filtered weakly through the narrow window of his quarters, painting silver streaks across the floor. He lay sprawled on the cold stone, the taste of iron still thick in his mouth. His body refused to obey him, yet his heart still beat stubbornly.

"I'm... still alive..." The words slipped from his lips, hoarse and weak, but undeniable.

Alive. Barely.

As he lay there, fragments of memory struck him like shards of glass. The cruel laughter of his family as he was dragged away. The whip tearing into his flesh. The suffocating darkness that had swallowed him whole when his body finally failed.

And then... the voice.

His head throbbed as the memory forced itself into clarity. A faint, mechanical whisper, broken yet undeniable.

"System... host confirmed... initialization..."

Gabriel's eyes trembled. He could still see it, the faint flicker of a glowing panel before his vision had gone black. At the time, he had thought it a dying hallucination, the fantasy of a useless prince who had wished for a miracle in his final moments.

But now... as his chest rose and fell, a new sensation crept through him.

It started as a cool trickle in his veins, subtle and fleeting. He thought it was nothing, just his broken body playing tricks. But the sensation returned, stronger, sharper, soothing his agony even as it sent shivers crawling across his skin. His breath grew misty in the moonlight. The wounds on his arms stung as though kissed by frost.

This was no hallucination.

Gabriel clenched his jaw, his handsome features twisting under the silver glow. His pale lips trembled, hair soaked with sweat clinging to his sharp jawline. His body might have been broken, but his face retained that tragic nobility that made his suffering all the more unbearable to watch.

Something inside him was awakening.

The cold spread, filling his veins, steadying his breath. His heartbeat, which had been sluggish and faint, grew firmer with each thump. Water's calmness cooled his fever, while ice's cruelty reminded him of the suffering he had endured. Two opposites, flowing and freezing, merging in harmony within him.

His eyes, glassy with pain moments ago, lit faintly with a glacial glimmer.

"So... this is what I felt before..." he whispered, his voice breaking, but his lips curled into a bitter smile.

Relief surged within him, proof that he was not entirely worthless, that there was something hidden inside him all along. But fear soon followed. If his family discovered this, would they nurture it? No. They would crush it, strangle it before it bloomed. His father, his brothers, his sisters, none would allow the "trash prince" to threaten their glory.

Even now, even with this spark, he was still their shame. Still the disgrace of Sunfire Kingdom.

His expression darkened, shadows dancing across his pale features. Yet in that shadow, his resolve blazed fiercer than ever.

"Then let me be shame," Gabriel muttered, his voice low but sharp. "Let me be trash. And from trash, I'll rise until the world itself bows."

The moment the words left his lips, a faint hum echoed in his ears. Blue light shimmered before his eyes, flickering uncertainly as though fighting to exist. His breath caught.

The same panel he had glimpsed before his collapse now hung clearly in the air before him.

The numbers mocked him, so weak, so fragile, a body barely clinging to life. Yet his gaze fixed on the final line. Affinity: Water/Ice (Awakened). The words glowed faintly, like a candle refusing to be snuffed out.

It was real. Not a hallucination. Not a dream.

Gabriel laughed, a sound dry and broken, yet defiant. Each breath tore at his lungs, yet he laughed still. Tears prickled at his eyes, not of sorrow, but of bitter joy.

"So... I wasn't nothing after all..." he whispered.

His hand trembled as he raised it before his face. Even with skin pale and veins bruised, he clenched it into a fist. Pain tore through him, yet he did not loosen his grip.

Handsome even in his ruin, Gabriel's figure under the pale moonlight was one of tragic beauty. His sharp jaw, bloodied lips, and the faint icy mist that escaped his breath gave him the air of a fallen angel, broken but unyielding.

He forced his head to the side, gazing at the door as though staring through it at the world beyond. He imagined the sneers of his siblings, the cold indifference of his father, the disgust in the eyes of servants who saw him as less than dirt. His chest ached, not from wounds, but from the weight of humiliation he had carried all his life.

But now... he had a spark.

"System..." he whispered, his voice raspy but resolute. "If you've chosen me... then watch. Watch as I carve my name into this cursed world."

The blue panel flickered once more before fading into the air, leaving only the faint glow of moonlight across his broken body. His consciousness threatened to slip again, but this time, he did not fear the darkness.

For within that darkness, a spark had ignited.

And Gabriel Ashford would do everything in his power to turn that spark into a flame that even the heavens could not extinguish.
