Intricate seals covered the ground around Darui in the ruined refugee camp. Kai, without pausing, swiftly cut a small lock of Darui's hair.
The moment the hair touched Darui's wound, Kai moved. His hands blurred, like a butterfly's wings, as he rapidly formed hand seals. Powerful chakra erupted like a tidal wave.
Life Restoration Technique!
The mystical seals around them seemed to come alive, weaving around the hair and surging into Darui's wounds. A soft green light enveloped Darui's body.
The gaping wound in his chest began to visibly heal as granulation tissue pulsed and rapidly closed the opening. All his other wounds, except the chest wound, healed instantly.
The onlookers were speechless, witnessing this incredible feat of medical ninjutsu. Samui, as an elite Kumogakure jōnin, understood the significance of what she was seeing.
A strong medical ninja in a team could easily save several lives during a mission.
After several minutes, the light surrounding Darui faded. The chest wound was healed, leaving only a scar. All other injuries were gone.
"Here are some blood-boosting pills. Give him one," Kai said, casually tossing a vial to Samui. The intricate seals on the ground dissipated.
"Th-thank you," Samui, regaining her composure, gave him a grateful look before hurrying to Darui's side. She fed Darui a crimson pill, and his pale skin gradually regained its color.
"Old man, I'm hungry…" Unlike Samui's awe at Uchiha Kai's medical ninjutsu, Yugito Nii was focused on her empty stomach. Seeing Darui recovering, she immediately grabbed Kai's hand and began to shake it.
The two tailed beasts, now ornaments, also stared at Kai expectantly, yawning. Kimimaro remained silent, but the longing in his eyes spoke volumes.
"Nagato, thank you for saving him," Samui said, relieved that Darui was stable. "You must be hungry after your journey."
"But this is just a refugee camp. Besides the milk we collected this morning, getting food requires going through channels, reporting to Sensei Tōru first."
"Old man, I have a feeling life's going to be tough from now on," Yugito sighed.
"How about I hunt some wild game, and you show off your cooking skills?" The thought of Kai's cooking had already put her at odds with the two tailed beasts. Her initial motivation for becoming jinchuriki had evolved into a simpler goal: to become strong enough to get her fill.
"You're just greedy," Kai said, flicking her forehead. Seeing the children's thin and worn clothing, he frowned, various culinary ideas flashing through his mind.
Kumogakure, located in the northeastern corner of the shinobi world, had a cold climate with frequent, biting winds. Seeing the children's thin clothing and runny noses, Kai settled on a particular dessert.
While hearty meals were satisfying, something to warm them up in this unpredictable weather was needed. This dessert would use the water buffalo milk, and he'd spotted some suitable main ingredients in a nearby field during the fight.
"Nagato, watch over them. I'll go buy some food," Samui said, clutching her meager purse. As a jōnin, she could earn through missions, but caring for seven or eight children was expensive. In wartime, missions were scarce; they were lucky to not be starving.
"Keep your few coins. The water buffalo milk is enough," Kai said, taking her hand.
"Really?" Samui hesitated, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Don't worry, I have some savings."
"Save it for your wedding. Bring the milk, and pick a few children. I found some good ingredients in that field over there," Kai said, flicking her forehead.
The unexpected gesture startled Samui. She stared at Kai's retreating back, her forehead still tingling.
She'd always been ostracized because of her status as a disciple of the previous Two-Tails jinchuriki and a refugee.
Her strength had earned her respect, but she'd become cold and aloof. No one, not even the Raikage or Killer B, had ever dared to flick her forehead. Kai's sudden action stirred something unexpected within her.
"I've noted that. That's the expression of a smitten woman," Yugito giggled.
Samui's face flushed crimson. "You little rascal! What nonsense are you talking about? I don't know what smitten means!"
"Oh really?" Yugito grinned, producing a mirror. "Look for yourself."
Samui glared at Yugito before fleeing. However, despite Kai's confidence in his cooking, she remained uncertain. If it failed, she'd borrow money rather than fail to repay Kai for saving their lives, hoping he'd stay longer.
"What am I thinking about?!" Samui covered her flushed face, feeling Yugito's mischievous gaze, and hurried towards the old warehouse.
As Kai and his group moved, the Kaguya clan, having left the refugee camp, returned to their secluded mountainside compound near Kumogakure.
Since the Kinkaku and Ginkaku rebellion, the once-powerful Kaguya clan had been marginalized, similar to the Uchiha. Unlike the Uchiha, they were known for their volatile tempers and exceptional physical strength, often taking the most dangerous missions.
Their position in Kumogakure was sensitive, but their status remained relatively high.
