Chapter 54: Look at the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor You Found
Headmaster's Office.
The moonlight outside the window was fluid, quietly pouring in.
Dumbledore, who had been playing with his bird, slowly turned around, smiling warmly, and softly said, "Filius, Minerva, sit down first. Do not be so anxious."
Professor McGonagall was as stiff as a rod. Small in stature but Professor Flitwick standing beside her was equally solemn-looking.
"This cannot be lightly taken at all!" Professor McGonagall stated firmly.
Dumbledore sat down, unperturbed.
"I understand your concerns. Dylan is a very talented kid. To you, he is an uncut diamond with unlimited potential. But it is precisely because of his power that he is more likely to stay on the edge of darkness."
Professor McGonagall turned to Flitwick, "Precisely! I had no idea he even wanted to teach himself Defense Against the Dark Arts!"
"You have to understand that self-study Defense Against the Dark Arts, even with a moment's laxity, can lead to getting lost!"
Professor Flitwick looked embarrassed.
After Dylan had left, he had intended to seek Dumbledore's advice, but happened to bump into Professor McGonagall instead, since she was also on her way to see Dumbledore.
Quite naturally, he was not able to hide from her Dylan's desire to learn Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Such was how the current situation had arisen.
Dumbledore smiled warmly at the two, "You should also understand that young ones always have curiosity about something unknown."
"I heard he killed a troll with Incendio?"
Professor McGonagall nodded, her face strained.
"This clearly shows that the child has good learning and judgment abilities. I presume it was because he read the description of the Fiendfyre Curse in a book, together with the Incendio spell he had already mastered, that he came up with the idea of learning Defense Against the Dark Arts."
Seeing that neither of them sat down, Dumbledore halted, then stood up, resting against the desk.
"It's our job as professors not to forbid, but to teach."
He moved over to the window, looking out into the snowy night.
"Because he wants to learn, if we don't teach him, won't he get the idea of attempting to learn by himself?"
"Didn't you say he came to you because he couldn't work it out clearly by himself, Filius?"
Professor Flitwick nodded gently, "That's what he told me indeed."
Dumbledore turned, smiling, "So, as long as we can provide him with a safe framework and provide him with the right direction, I believe he won't fall into darkness."
"Of course, after all, he is a Gryffindor student."
Professor Flitwick nodded again, "That's right, that little boy is very intelligent and gifted. And, to be frank, I don't think there is anything particularly outrageous in him wanting to learn Defense Against the Dark Arts."
Professor McGonagall shot him a sideways glance, opened her mouth, and finally said, "Yes, learning the counter-curse to Fiendfyre is not so absurd. But what if I told you that he mentioned a new spell to me today."
"The Entropy Rupture Distortion Curse?"
"Hmm?"
Professor Flitwick and Dumbledore both turned to stare at her.
Professor McGonagall sighed.
"In all my years of teaching, I've never encountered such boldness in a young wizard! His audacity exceeds my wildest imagination!"
Professor Flitwick frowned, "What do you mean? This new spell. the name doesn't sound very friendly."
The wrinkles at the corners of Professor McGonagall's eyes fluttered.
"His Living Transfiguration study seems to be stuck at a specific phase. Today, when we were discussing Transfiguration, he suddenly mentioned this spell to me."
Professor McGonagall sighed.
"You can infer from the name itself. Dylan explained to me that although Transfiguration may also be applied for combat, instead of having to split one's focus during combat in order to imagine the transformation of the target, it would be better to."
"Instead of directly distorting the opponent?" Professor Flitwick spoke.
Professor McGonagall slightly nodded.
"Goodness gracious!" Professor Flitwick exclaimed.
"For individuals lacking a deep understanding of Transfiguration, casting this spell in actual combat is truly difficult. Dylan's idea is that he wishes to create a spell that can directly distort the opponent's body, or even directly rip it into a series of pieces."
"And to prevent splitting the enemy into something too radical, with combat ability even stronger than before when they were a human wizard."
"Dylan also informed me. this spell is best used to simply split the enemy into two parts, or just deform one of the limbs."
"Like this, it can really affect the power of the opponent during the battle."
As Professor McGonagall's voice lowered, the Headmaster's office was shrouded in an eerie silence.
After a lengthy pause, Dumbledore faced Professor McGonagall with a complex expression, choosing his words cautiously.
"Well. he is, after all, only a first-year student. Wanting to use Transfiguration in actual combat is a idea a lot of young wizards have."
"It's just that the spell he wants to learn. is quite disturbing, really. And although the theory is good—I mean for actual combat only."
"But if this theory is actually put into practice, it can easily lead one astray."
Dumbledore sat down again.
"Perhaps, you can also guide him more, make him understand that spell creation is not that easy."
"Also, you can talk to him more about the shaping and secondary control of spells. This can be of immense improvement in their practical application in combat."
Professor McGonagall hesitated, then nodded.
Reshaping and secondary control of spells could unleash a variety of effects from the core spell, and the strength could be even greater.
Fiendfyre, for example, was a ramped-up version of Incendio.
She hadn't told Dylan this before because it required a wizard to have almost complete control of a spell.
But now.
She reckoned that she still needed to talk to Dylan more, even if the content might be beyond Dylan's understanding. This might actually intrigue Dylan in the right manner, thus reducing his exploration of those dark things.
"Additionally, Filius, even if Defense Against the Dark Arts does not cover the counter-curse to Fiendfyre, Dylan is not an ordinary little wizard after all. This is also an understanding of spells. If you think he can learn it, you can thoroughly teach it to him. There's nothing wrong with that."
Dumbledore comforted the two of them. Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick exchanged a glance, finally bid farewell, and turned to leave.
After they had been gone for a while.
Dumbledore suddenly faced the door again.
"Severus, did Dylan come to you as well?"
Professor Snape's figure suddenly emerged from the darkness, his face icy.
"See what's happened now. This is the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher you so carefully selected. See what he's driven such a talented young wizard to!"
Dumbledore: ".
