Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: The Rain that Smells of Blood

The house was in complete chaos; blood splattered everywhere, furniture torn apart and broken, as if zombies had broken in and attacked the family.

"Though it's not the best place, it's enough for now…" – Kojou muttered as he used telekinesis to lift one of the fallen couches from the floor and carefully laid Yuriko on it.

"Luckily, her soul hasn't left her body yet…" – he murmured, staring at Yuriko's cold, pale form. Even though her body was technically dead, her soul still lingered within, which meant there was still a chance to save her.

"Replacing her ribs with mine won't be enough to save her…" – Kojou thought as he extended his hand toward Yuriko's chest, stopping just inches away – "Sorry, but this is the only way to save you right now."

Normally, implanting a piece of his body would be more than enough to save others, even if their bodies had already died, as long as their souls hadn't departed. It was never difficult for him. Unfortunately, Sadalmelik-Albus had yet to awaken. Sadalmelik-Albus was the source of Kojou's immortality, the reason he could not be killed. But since he hadn't yet found a suitable spiritual medium to awaken it, Kojou couldn't share his immortality with others so easily.

Crack*

After a moment of hesitation, Kojou thrust his hand into Yuriko's chest, shattering her ribcage. He managed to reach her heart, carefully detaching everything connected to it while committing to memory how it was all linked.

Sadly, Kojou had no medical knowledge. He had to memorize every detail of the connections so he could properly reattach them when transplanting his own heart into Yuriko.

Once he confirmed he had memorized the size, placement, and connections, Kojou removed Yuriko's heart and set it aside. Then, without hesitation, he drove his hand into his own chest and pulled out his heart.

Blood covered both Kojou and Yuriko's bodies, soaking the floor as the metallic scent filled the air. But Kojou didn't care—his focus was solely on saving Yuriko.

His heart contained his magical essence. The instant he pulled it out, the link between his magic and his body was severed, forcing his body to regenerate a new heart instead of reclaiming the old one.

Once the new heart formed, Kojou imbued it with his magic and altered its size to match Yuriko's original heart. Then, he placed it inside her chest, reconnecting the arteries exactly as they had been attached before.

"I think… that should be enough…" – Kojou muttered quietly, staring intently at Yuriko's lifeless body.

Throb*

Suddenly, Kojou felt a surge of his magical energy erupt from Yuriko's new heart, spreading throughout her body. It began merging with her flesh, blood, and soul.

"…" – Kojou watched in silence as Yuriko's lifeless body healed all of its wounds in an instant and visibly began regaining vitality.

Before his very eyes, Yuriko's pale skin regained its natural color, her body temperature rose, and though she didn't awaken immediately, she had unmistakably returned to life—at least physically.

"Haaah~" – Kojou let out a relieved sigh, wiping the sweat from his forehead. Even though he had been confident, he had still felt a twinge of nervousness.

Now, all he had to do was wait for Yuriko to complete her transformation into a Blood Servant. She would awaken on her own afterward.

Normally, the transformation into a Blood Servant was instantaneous. But Yuriko's case was special—she had already been dead, and zombie cells were still trying to devour her from within. That, combined with the gunshot that had destroyed parts of her brain, made the transformation take longer than usual.

Until she awoke, Kojou wasn't certain if there would be any side effects.

Rumble*

Suddenly, black clouds gathered in the evening sky, blotting out the light as thunder and lightning roared like an enraged beast, shaking the very souls of the living.

Plink-plonk*

Plink-plonk*

Plink-plonk*

"…A blood rain…" – Kojou muttered in confusion, watching the crimson droplets, resembling blood, splatter against the windows and houses outside.

"Is this the cause of the disaster… or just a phenomenon triggered by it?" – he murmured, picking up the unconscious Yuriko in a princess carry before stepping out of the ruined house. He needed to examine this blood rain himself, for he could feel a magical presence emanating from it.

Kojou stepped out of the makeshift shelter, carrying Yuriko in his arms, into the empty street. Everyone else was hiding from the blood rain, either in nearby houses or cars.

"…" – Kojou's eyes landed on Saeko and the others. Apart from his guild members, there was no one else outside. Even the zombies had already been dealt with.

Without hesitation, Kojou began walking toward the group, still carrying Yuriko. He needed to discuss matters with them, especially since he could sense an overwhelming magical force not far from their location.

[ Ding! ]

Just a few meters away from the group, Kojou froze in place as a guild notification appeared before him.
