Chapter 31 - CH 23

Ron:

Arthur… I feel you're in a state where you want to be left alone to try and fathom all of that.....

What if it was all for nothing? What if you did something wrong?

Before shutting the world out and carrying yourself to the cross… do you know the Question of Perfection?

Arthur: …What is that?

Ron: It's the most perfect question you'll ever hear — with one twist. If you ask a perfect question, you need a perfect… what?

Arthur: …Answer? But I don't un—

Ron:

Will Arthur.... There's a famous dilemma: a train is heading toward two tracks. One track has a single person tied to it; the other has five. The choice is in your hands — turn left or right. In the heat of the moment most would choose to kill the one to save the five. But imagine you had all the time in the world to decide between killing one or five. That's where the Question of Perfection lives.

Arthur: What difference would it make in the end? One is less than five.

Ron: Is it? Then consider this — do you want to answer?

Arthur: Then I'll kill the one person.

Ron:

It isn't that simple. I didn't call it the Question of Perfection for drama alone — it measures the perfection rate in humans. I need your most perfect answer.

Arthur: I'll still turn it left — kill one.

Ron: I never said… never mind. Left it is. Let's call this Scenario One. You turned it left, and you become responsible for the deaths of 290,000 people.

Arthur: How? It was just one person. Fine — right, then.

Ron:

In Scenario One, the one you killed was a scientist who had discovered a cure. Because he's dead, the cure will take five more years to develop. The disease kills 290,000 people a year × 5 = 1.45 million. Would you rather be responsible for roughly one and a half million people, or for five?

Which it will turn out one of them was a serial killer, and will kidnap the four people that was tied with him on the tracks... And they suffered on his hand so much, that they wished their death and learned in this that nothing nothing they ever wished for happens..... ARTHUR could you tell me what happened if a person was rejected from hope and desperation what should he feel for the future...

Arthur:... Ron.... I don't know where are you going with this.....

Ron:.....They will be stuck in the present.....with no hope, no desperation,no fear,no sadness, no joy nothing ...they became hollow vessel...for madness to fill.....

Arthur:

I still don't understand where you're going with this... One is still less than five.

Ron:

Arthur… dear Arthur. Do you really not get it? This isn't a decision you make in the heat of the moment. You have all the time in the world to think, to compare, to find the perfect answer — not just the right one, the perfect one.

Arthur:

Isn't this enough? I've been trying to be open-minded. I still don't understand. I've had enough. No more.

Ron:

Scenario ten: the train is moving fast and you can turn it left or right. Kill one or kill five. This time you can ask for help — you have counselors.

Arthur:

This is out of control. What do you think, guys?

Dalia:

...Well, I don't know where Ron is going with this, but I realize we should consider every possibility to get the perfect answer.

Ryan:

Right. Like — in the first scenario, killing one is equivalent to killing roughly 1.5 million. In the second, they were all criminals. In the third, no matter what you choose they all corpses in the first place. In the fourth we could just stop the train. The fifth... hmmm, the fifth was...

Tommy:

Ryan, my friend — are you stupid, or do you think we are?

Ryan:

Hah.

Tommy:

We've all heard scenarios one to ten. You don't need to bring them up.

Ryan:

I was just recapping. God.

Tommy (laughing):

You guys are too polite — I'm enjoying fucking with you.

Ryan:

...Fuck you.

Tommy:

Don't mind if I do. But be gentle.

Ryan:

Tommy — bro, shut up for one second, please. Like I was saying: if we know everything, we can see the bigger picture.

Dalia:

Who are the people tied on the tracks?

Ron:

Just ordinary people.

Tommy:

What happened to you? Ryan said four of them. The fifth scenario was millionaires who would give you money. The sixth was businessmen who run factories that support a lot of families. The seventh was a king or president. The eighth was a mafia boss who'd go after your family if he dies. The ninth was your most important person. All of those versus five ordinary people — it was hard to choose. But now you're saying one versus five, and they're all ordinary — that's the basic form. That's the easiest: one of them all.

Ron:

You're always joking around. It's nice to see you lock in.

Tommy:

I love playing games.

Ron:

Here's where you got it wrong: it's not a game, nor is it easier just because it's the basic form. You talked about the scenarios, but you should focus on how you solved it.

Dalai:

You emphasized what their jobs were… so the obvious next question is: what are their professions?

Ron:

Hmm… alright. If you turn the train to the left, the one tied on the tracks is the President of the United States. And on the right, the five individuals are: the King of Saudi Arabia, the President of China, the Prime Minister of England, the Chancellor of Germany, and finally, the President of Spain.

…You know what? Let's make it more fun. Add to the left the President of Russia.

Arthur:

That's still two against five. Nothing you can do will change our decision this time. Your previous scenarios made us question each individual's importance, but right now all six… the seventh… are equal in status. Even if the world agrees the USA and Russia are arguably the strongest countries, two is still less than five.

But before answering—can we stop the train with the brakes like before?

Ron: No. You can't.

Arthur: Then I—

Ron: Wait. Before choosing… Ryan, turn on the TV again. Channel 237.

Ryan: Why?

Ron: Just type the number on the remote.

TV: "…Welcome back to A Blonde Against the World…"

Ryan: What the f—

RING… RING… RING…

Ryan: Private number…

Ron: If I were you, I'd answer it. Put it on speaker.

Ryan: Alright… hello?

The phone: I am the Vice President of the United States. I humbly request that you save the President of the United States.

Ryan: Very funny, Ron. How did you—

RING… RING… RING… RING…

Tommy: Private number.

Dalia: Private number…

Emma: Número privado.

Lina: Numéro masqué.

Arthur: …Here too.

Everyone's phones: "Save the King of Saudi Arabia / the President of China / the Prime Minister of England / the Chancellor of Germany / the President of Spain…"

Ryan: What the hell, Ron? What is this?

Ron: Now you're representing those countries. Whatever you choose… that country will take the blame.

Dalia: Wait—so this is real? What's on the TV…

Ron: As you can see, the seven leaders of the world are tied down on the tracks. It's up to you who lives.

Tommy: WHAT SHOULD WE DO?!

Ryan, Dalia, Emma, Lina: …

Ron: That's the perfect reaction.

RING… RING… RING…

Ron: Whose phone is that?

Haaaah—nnngh…"

"Mmm… haaah…"

"Hoooaah… nnn…"

"Aaahh… hnng…"

Yes… this is she… Russia—WHAT?!

Give me one minute—

What was that? Are you all okay? Who is he?

Anyway, I just got the weirdest call. Something about saving the President of Russia… and a train… can you imagine?

Hello? Earth to all of you? Why are you looking so pale?

What are you watching—oh my god… why are there people tied down on the tracks?!

Ron: Perfect timing, Chris. We'll explain later.

Now… what will your answer be to the perfect question?

Arthur: Do you think just because of this, it'll be harder to choose?

Ron: Your understanding is too narrow, Arthur. What you choose will affect your country… and the relationships between these countries.

Ryan: How? We're nobodies.

Ron: As of this moment, you are representatives of your country—and every country that contacted you. If you hadn't answered, it would be your personal decision. But now… it's political.

Tommy: In other words…

Ron: Choose whether two countries blame five for killing their leaders… or five countries blame the two...

And special shout out to you Tommy, five ordinary VS one is indeed basic..... So thank you.... You opened my mind...
