Chapter 24 - The Price of the Bridge

The vampires didn't stop.

Their rage echoed through the mansion walls as they tore through guards and innocent staff. Blood painted the marble floors, panic rising like smoke. Ethan stepped out from the corridor into the chaos, his expression cold, unreadable.

"Command them," Kali's voice came quietly from behind him.

Ethan frowned. "What?"

"Command them," she repeated, her gaze sharp.

He turned back to the crowd.

"Stop!"

His voice thundered across the space...and they froze.

The vampires halted mid-fight, their eyes now locked on Ethan. Some dropped their weapons, confused. Others trembled, feeling something unfamiliar coil inside them...obedience. A new kind of fear.

Then pain lanced through Ethan's back. He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to stay upright.

"I am the bridge," Ethan declared, his voice laced with fire. "The link between vampires and humans. If anyone wants to destroy that link, they'll have to kill me."

Silence. Tension thickened like smoke. None of the vampires moved.

They knew.

They felt it.

He wasn't just a vampire anymore...he was something more. Something none of them could challenge.

"Go home," Ethan ordered. "Blend in. Live quietly. Never reveal yourselves to the humans again."

One by one, the crowd dispersed, leaving only bodies, blood, and silence in their wake.

Grace stumbled into the mansion, her gown soaked in blood. Her breath came in shallow gasps. Henry rushed forward, recognizing her instantly.

"You're Austin's wife," he whispered, catching her as she swayed.

"I need... to see him..."

"We'll get you treated first," he said softly, helping her toward the infirmary, though dread already filled his chest.

Ethan moved away from the chaos, pain throbbing at his spine. His powers came at a cost...a cost no one else saw.

"Will he be alright?" Ryder asked, watching his brother from the shadows.

Kali exhaled slowly. "He's the strongest creature that walks this earth. But the pain will stay with him. He may be immortal, but this power wasn't meant to live inside one man alone."

Ryder's eyes narrowed. "He can't be killed, right?"

"He can," Kali said. "But only by one person."

Ryder stilled.

"A woman," she added, her tone unreadable. "She hasn't been born yet. But she will be. And when she does, she will destroy the bridge."

"I'll kill her first," Ryder said flatly.

Kali smiled bitterly. "You can try. But humans, though fragile, are often the most dangerous."

Grace lay in the infirmary bed, pale and trembling. The physician worked quickly to treat her wounds.

"Where's Austin?" she whispered, voice cracked with fear and desperation.

Henry hesitated. He wanted to lie. But she deserved the truth.

"He's gone."

The words fell like stones.

Grace's breath caught in her throat. She stared at the ceiling, blinking back tears...until they came flooding anyway.

Austin, her husband. Her light. Gone.

And he'd died for Whirlandia.

That same night, far from the dangers lurking,

Emily lay wide awake in her room.

Julian's words spun in her mind over and over. Her instincts screamed not to trust him...but he had saved her. And his ties to Sara... those were troubling.

Sara, the woman who always seemed to know more than she let on. The woman who lingered around Ethan like a shadow. Emily couldn't ignore the feeling in her gut. Something about all of this wasn't right.

Across the room, Riley sat cross-legged in front of a candle, flipping through the spells she'd learned.

"Casmato sato linda," she whispered.

The lights went out.

"Casmato dia."

They flickered back on.

A grin spread across her face...until a voice startled her.

"Having fun?"

Riley jumped, spinning to find Ryder leaning against the wall, half in shadow.

"What are you doing here?" she snapped.

"You're not just a witch, you know," he said, stepping closer. "You're as powerful as an original vampire. Maybe even more."

She narrowed her eyes. "Not afraid I might use that power on you?"

Ryder was suddenly in front of her, faster than her eyes could follow. She gasped, backing into the table.

"Getting used to it, aren't you?" he smirked.

Riley's heart thundered. His nearness unsettled her ...and not just because he was dangerous.

"You're thinking about that night," he said.

Her eyes widened. She shoved him away and turned to slam the window shut, the night air chilling her skin.

"Heard you went to a party... with that little human," he muttered, his distaste thick.

"She's not a 'little human,'" Riley snapped, facing him.

Ryder's eyes gleamed. "Then tell her to be careful. She might not see the next sunrise."

And just like that...he vanished.

Riley exhaled sharply, shaken.

Why did danger have to be so irritatingly attractive?

Ethan sat alone in the dark.

A half-burned candle flickered beside him. On his desk, a weathered parchment lay open...ink faded, language ancient. It was the last message left by the old orsticle witch before her death.

But he couldn't read it.

Pain stabbed through his back again. He grunted, falling to one knee. It was becoming unbearable.

He rose, slowly, and turned to the mirror. Red veins pulsed along his back, rising beneath his skin like flames, twisting through the tattoo etched into his spine.

The moonlight poured through the open curtains, highlighting the change. The marks were spreading...glowing faintly under the lunar light.

It always happened during a lunar eclipse. Every six months.

No one else knew. Only Santiago. Ethan hadn't even told Ryder.

This wasn't the immortality he was promised.

This was something darker.

And the worst part?

The pain had worsened since meeting her.

His life span.

Emily.

He gritted his teeth and stared at the parchment again.

Somewhere in those words... was an answer.

Or a curse.
