-------------------------------------------------------------

After obtaining the four Sharingan eyes, Midorima hid in the home of a wealthy merchant in Konoha.

The merchant's residence was heavily guarded, but to Midorima, it was nothing special. The reason he chose this place was simple—it had plenty of empty rooms.

Based on the size of the eyes, he roughly paired them into two sets.

It had to be said that the Mangekyō Sharingan was far more distinctive than the regular Sharingan. Each pair of Mangekyō had its own unique pattern, whereas the regular Sharingan—unless they had a different number of tomoe—were much harder to distinguish.

Coincidentally, both pairs of Sharingan in Midorima's possession were three-tomoe.

After sorting the eyes, Midorima proceeded with his next step.

The [Cell Laboratory] was his Kekkei Genkai, an innate ability within his body. Normally, he only summoned schematic diagrams, but integrating actual cells or even organs with the [Cell Laboratory] was something he had never tried before.

After all, this was a new function of the [Cell Laboratory].

When Midorima opened the [Cell Laboratory], three circles appeared, each with a "+" symbol inside.

He clicked on one of the "+" signs, and a dialog box popped up:

"Add cellular material?"

"Confirm."

Without hesitation, Midorima selected it, and a circular platform materialized.

He attempted to place one pair of Sharingan on it—and to his surprise, both the eyes and the platform vanished. The circle he had clicked now displayed an eye with three tomoe.

"Did it work…?"

Following the [Cell Laboratory]'s prompts, Midorima channeled chakra into it. Instantly, the sensation in his eyes changed—he could feel a massive surge of chakra gathering in them.

He tested the Sharingan's hypnotic ability on one of the merchant's servants, commanding them to fetch a mirror. However, even when using the Sharingan's power, his own eyes didn't physically manifest the three-tomoe pattern.

After some thought, Midorima came up with an explanation—the eyes were still his own. He was merely accessing the Sharingan's abilities through the [Cell Laboratory], while the actual Sharingan remained inside the [Laboratory].

Realizing this, Midorima immediately understood that this would become his ultimate trump card. Since there was no visible indication of the Sharingan's activation, no one would ever suspect it.

The only downside was that over time, the chakra required to sustain the [Sharingan] would increase. This was related to his proficiency with the [Cell Laboratory].

Additionally, the regular Sharingan wasn't his ultimate goal. Compared to the Mangekyō Sharingan, the regular version was weak—almost pitiful. If he couldn't upgrade it, its greatest value would likely be limited to techniques like Izanagi.

But since this was called a [Laboratory], there had to be a way to evolve the Sharingan, right?

That was Midorima's hope.

The conventional method of awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan required extreme negative emotions.

Midorima didn't want to rely on that—after all, ever since arriving in this world, he had been alone. It was hard to imagine any emotional trauma intense enough to trigger the evolution.

Maybe there was another way… like going bald?

He repeated the process with the second pair of Sharingan, storing them inside the [Cell Laboratory]. There was no other choice—carrying around a pair of Sharingan in Konoha was far too risky.

In this world, no place was more secure than the [Cell Laboratory].

Once everything was settled, Midorima returned his focus to reality.

The truth was, he needed an opportunity to leave Konoha. Hiding indefinitely wasn't a viable long-term plan.

The best option was Tsunade—after all, he had just saved Shizune, so the Fifth Hokage owed him a favor.

But what he never expected was that Itachi would also be in Tsunade's room, staring at him with sharp vigilance.

"Did I come at a bad time?" Midorima asked nervously.

He had never heard of any personal connection between Tsunade and Itachi. It seemed that after altering the story's trajectory, some unpredictable relationships had formed.

"Don't worry, I won't tell a soul. Please, carry on—don't mind me…" Midorima quickly turned to leave.

Though Tsunade and Itachi were both unmarried, and there was nothing wrong with them being together, he never expected that Tsunade had a taste for "older women preying on younger men"…

Why couldn't he be the younger man!?

Just as he was about to leap out the window, he felt a hand yank his collar—and the next second, he was flung back into the room.

"No, you came at just the right time." Tsunade's face was slightly flushed as she loomed over him, her smile anything but friendly.

Midorima suddenly felt like a helpless lamb, his safety far from guaranteed.

"Wait, let's talk this out! I can't take one of your punches! Besides, sis, I've never done anything to wrong you. I even made sure Shizune was well-fed—she didn't lose weight, in fact, she might've even…"

A chilling aura suddenly emanated from behind him. Midorima turned slowly to see Shizune glaring at him with murderous intent.

"Might've even what?" Shizune demanded.

"Maintained a stable weight," Midorima lied through his teeth.

Itachi had no patience for this exchange. He stepped forward, knelt before Midorima, and pressed his forehead to the floor.

"Please tell me—who took Sasuke?"

"Huh?" Midorima was stunned. For a moment, he wondered if he had misheard. "Sasuke? What about him? What happened?"

"He was kidnapped," Tsunade said, eyeing Midorima suspiciously. "You really don't know?"

"..." Midorima forced an awkward smile. "How could I?"

He had been busy with the Sharingan—why would he care about anything else?

Besides, if this had happened a few years later, he could've blamed Orochimaru. But right now? He had no idea.

And Orochimaru had never mentioned any plans involving Sasuke. His target had always been Itachi.

Itachi's face fell. "Then we'll have to wait for Naruto to wake up…"

Midorima's eyebrow twitched. "Naruto? What's wrong with him?"

"He's injured. He must've sensed Sasuke being taken and tried to stop it, but he was defeated," Tsunade explained.

Midorima nearly laughed. The bond between Naruto and Sasuke was truly unbreakable.

Back when he was watching Naruto, he had always felt that Naruto and Sasuke were the real pair—characters like Sakura and Hinata were just side characters in comparison.

"Well, honestly, I really don't know anything about this. I've been in Konoha for a while, but I hardly ever go out. So whatever's happening in the village, I'm clueless."

Midorima had a suspicion, but no proof.

"You've been in Konoha for a while? Where have you been staying?" Tsunade pressed. "Was Shizune kept there too?"

Midorima smirked.

"Are you sure you want to know?"

Tsunade immediately fell silent.

That phrase had never led to anything good.
