Sitting on a tree branch, Asachi Midorima watched the raging flames with an indescribable sense of satisfaction.
As the saying goes, "Joy puts heart into a man," and it seemed this held true even after transmigrating into another world.
Take Midorima, for example. Not only had he broken free from Orochimaru's control, but after helping Shizune remove her cursed seal, he had also unlocked [Assimilation].
In simple terms, this ability allowed him to absorb the chakra from cursed seals within his body. While dismantling the seals, it also served to "increase his internal chakra reserves."
Instantly, the threat posed by sealing techniques or cursed seal techniques was significantly reduced for Midorima.
Though [Assimilation] seemed impressive, it paled in comparison to the new functional zone—[Biological Laboratory]. Just from the name, one could tell this lab had a profound connection to living organisms.
By the time Midorima fully grasped the capabilities of the [Biological Laboratory], he was in a state of uncontainable excitement.
In the world of Naruto, what mattered most wasn't hard work, determination, passion, or friendship—it was bloodline.
For instance, the Sharingan of the Uchiha clan, the Byakugan of the Hyūga clan, or even the elite shinobi of Kirigakure, like the Hōzuki family—all of them relied on Kekkei Genkai (Bloodline Limits).
But ever since transmigrating, Midorima had been devoid of any Kekkei Genkai. Some jutsu, even if deciphered, remained unusable simply because he lacked the corresponding bloodline, often putting him at a disadvantage in battles.
In truth, it wasn't just Midorima—even Orochimaru struggled with the limitations of Kekkei Genkai. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been so obsessed with the Uchiha clan.
The [Biological Laboratory] was essentially Midorima's own Kekkei Genkai.
However, at its current stage, the lab's functions weren't fully developed.
Unlike other functional zones, the [Biological Laboratory] had two sub-zones. The one unlocked was the [Cell Research Lab], whose primary function was integrating cells carrying Kekkei Genkai into the lab, allowing the host to use that Kekkei Genkai.
Since it operated within the [Cell Research Lab], the side effects of the Kekkei Genkai wouldn't affect the host—but they would impact the cells themselves.
Take Shikotsumyaku (Dead Bone Pulse) as an example: if Midorima obtained blood or other cells from the Kaguya clan, he could use their bone-manipulating abilities. However, the degeneration associated with the technique wouldn't harm his body—it would only damage the cells. Once the cells deteriorated, he'd lose access to Shikotsumyaku.
As for drawbacks, there were three:
1. The added cells must fully express the Kekkei Genkai's function.
For most bloodline abilities, this was straightforward—just cells related to the Kekkei Genkai's associated jutsu. But dōjutsu (eye techniques) were different. Take the Sharingan, for instance. Not just any Uchiha cell would grant its power. To use the Sharingan's abilities, Midorima would still need to acquire the actual eyes.
2. Proficiency played a role.
Even with a Kekkei Genkai, its power would be significantly weaker at first. To enhance its effects, Midorima needed to improve his [Cell Research Lab] proficiency.
3. A maximum of three Kekkei Genkai could be held simultaneously.
This limitation set a clear boundary.
Was three too few?
For Midorima, it was somewhat restrictive.
But considering that in the Naruto world, even one powerful Kekkei Genkai was a rarity, he couldn't afford to be too greedy.
Moreover, the [Cell Research Lab] allowed him to swap out Kekkei Genkai. If he found something better, he could always replace an existing one.
This functional zone addressed Midorima's greatest deficiency.
Of course, having the [Biological Laboratory] didn't mean he possessed a Kekkei Genkai yet—he still needed to obtain the Sharingan.
But Danzō, that old fox, had hidden the eyes too well. With no leads, Midorima resorted to a drastic measure:
If you like hiding things, I'll just burn your estate to the ground.
Given Danzō's many secrets, he wouldn't want outsiders interfering—especially with the Sharingan, which could not be discovered.
Perhaps some ROOT members knew about the eyes, but they'd still need to locate them first.
Fortunately, Midorima had spent enough time in Danzō's estate to know its layout. Avoiding ROOT patrols would've been troublesome otherwise. Plus, recent surveillance by Konoha had forced Danzō to reduce ROOT's presence around his home.
If not for Shizune's capture, Midorima might never have gotten this opportunity.
As for the risk of the Sharingan being destroyed in the fire…
Midorima wasn't worried. Danzō's paranoia ensured the eyes were stashed in some underground vault—untouchable by flames.
After setting the blaze (or rather, multiple fires), Midorima perched on a nearby tree, observing the chaos.
If a skilled water-style shinobi unleashed a Great Waterfall Technique, they could douse the flames—but it'd also flood Danzō's basement. Even if Midorima failed to retrieve the Sharingan, watching Danzō and Hiruzen's ensuing confrontation would've been entertaining.
Sadly, no one present could perform such a jutsu—or if they could, Danzō wouldn't let them rummage through his property unsupervised.
Half an hour passed. As dusk fell, Danzō finally arrived, his face twisted in fury.
His estate, built from aged wood, was now an inferno. The blaze, having raged for so long, showed no signs of weakening.
Even from his tree, Midorima felt the scorching air. Danzō, standing at the edge, was nearly driven back by the heat. His subordinates tried restraining him, but he snarled, "You expect me to stand by while my life's work burns?"
The "life's work" was secondary—what he really feared was exposure.
Especially of the Sharingan.
In his hands, they were tools of power. But if discovered by the Hokage—or worse, Tsunade—they'd become his execution warrant.
"It's too dangerous!" a subordinate protested.
"Dangerous? Bullshit!" Danzō kicked the man aside.
He couldn't wait. Would the Sharingan?
Any longer, and they'd be roasted beyond use!
Gathering a few water-style users, Danzō charged into the flames.
Midorima stood, pulling a black mask over his face—leaving only his eyes exposed.
Alright. Time to work.
