Chapter 57 - Chapter 57 ⭃ What to Do When Your Dog Has No Appetite

Who in the wizarding world would refuse to raise a dragon? Hagrid certainly wouldn't.

As for its temperamental nature... well, what of it? Children will be children — being a bit mischievous is perfectly normal.

Being sent back from the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary only proved those people were incompetent. Look how skinny they all are, like walking sticks — how could they possibly raise dragons properly?

"Well then, if you become a professor..."

"No problem!" Without letting Kyle finish, Hagrid waved his hand, "I agree to the bet."

He didn't even consider whether this kid could really convince Newt, or if Dumbledore would allow a dragon into Hogwarts — he just agreed right away.

Seemingly afraid Kyle might change his mind, he quickened his pace, leading the three of them at a jog toward the Mooncalf caves.

"Stay here, don't go any further." Hagrid turned around and spoke seriously to the three, "The Mooncalves' dance takes a lot of energy, so they need plenty of sleep during the day. You'll need to keep as quiet as possible."

Kanna and Cedric nodded silently, then turned to look curiously at the tent-like caves.

Why didn't Kyle join them? They were just Mooncalves — he'd seen them countless times at Newt's place.

His attention was fully focused on the Wiggentrees around them. Compared to other places, these magical rowans grew very tall and thick.

He knocked on the trunk — solid as could be.

Seeing his actions, Hagrid explained quietly, "Because Mooncalves stamp their droppings into the ground, these Wiggentrees usually grow very well wherever they are. Also, this is a Bowtruckle nesting site."

Kyle looked up and quickly spotted countless "little green sprouts" in the Wiggentree. This was just like what he'd seen at Newt's — in that magical suitcase, the Bowtruckles and Mooncalves were neighbors.

He picked up a branch from the ground and asked, "Hagrid, may I collect some branches?"

"You can, but what do you want them for?"

"Just have some ideas."

When they came out of the Forbidden Forest, Hagrid was carrying a large bundle of dead branches. Kyle had offered to use a Levitation Charm, but the half-giant insisted on carrying them himself, saying it would be simpler.

After leaving the Forest, Cedric headed back to the castle for class while Kyle and Kanna stayed behind.

Unlike last time, Hagrid warmly invited them to visit his hut.

When they entered, a large black dog came bounding over, its tongue lolling and tail wagging like a fan.

Kyle hugged its head and gave it a good rubbing, making its eyes nearly roll back in pleasure. He had to admit, it felt pretty nice.

"Alright Fang, come here."

Hagrid put down a bowl of something gray and mushy, and Fang excitedly rushed over, burying his face in it.

He patted the dog's head, "Eat slowly, there's more if you want it."

Meanwhile, Kyle looked around.

The single room was modest, even somewhat shabby, with hams and pheasants hanging from the ceiling, a copper kettle boiling on the fireplace, and a large bed with a patchwork quilt in the corner.

Yet Kyle noticed the ham was from a Graphorn, suspended by what appeared to be white, shiny Acromantula silk.

Even the cushions they sat on were woven from unicorn hair — not entirely from tail hair, but still remarkably luxurious. Kyle had never sat on anything so expensive.

After Hagrid sat down, Kyle made the introductions, "This is Kanna, and the one who just left was Cedric. They're Hufflepuffs like me, though Cedric is in second year."

"Hello." Hagrid happily greeted her and took a rock cake from a nearby plate to offer her and Kyle, "You must be hungry, try my cooking."

When Kanna took the rock cake, she felt her hand suddenly weighed down, as if she were holding a brick. Her eye twitched slightly, and she wisely decided not to put it in her mouth.

Kyle didn't eat his either, but he asked for another one, claiming he'd share it with Cedric later.

Hagrid beamed at this and generously offered him the whole plate of rock cakes, insisting he could come back for more anytime.

But Kyle only took two and tucked them in his pocket. He definitely wasn't going to eat them — even if rock cakes tasted good, without giant-like teeth they'd be impossible to enjoy.

Though they might make decent self-defense weapons. Lately, Snape had been tormenting him to the point of nervous breakdown — if he ever couldn't take it anymore, throwing one of these at the back of his head might not be a bad option.

No, rather, he'd just be offering Professor Snape some food — not his fault if the other party couldn't catch it.

Taking back the returned plate, Hagrid looked at him and said somewhat sheepishly, "Well, I have a dog, but lately it's been lacking energy and has no appetite. What could be wrong?"

Kyle instinctively glanced at Fang, who was frantically devouring his food.

No energy? Poor appetite? If he remembered correctly, this was already the second bowl.

"Not Fang." Hagrid quickly explained, seeing his confused look, "It's another dog."

"Oh..." Now Kyle understood — so he was talking about the three-headed dog.

He looked around again but couldn't spot Fluffy anywhere.

"Didn't I tell you before?" Kyle turned back to say, "Just keep it in the Forbidden Forest."

"I did, but it didn't work." Hagrid said plaintively, "It was much better in the Forest, but as soon as it comes back to the room, it gets listless again."

"..." Kyle was speechless.

Hagrid's understanding was truly something else — did he think this was just about taking the dog for walks? And he'd actually brought it back!

"Hagrid, three-headed dogs..."

"Just one head, just one head!"

Kyle took a deep breath, ignoring the half-giant's frantic denials, and continued, "Three-headed dogs are massive magical creatures that naturally need wide, open spaces. When they're kept in a low, confined space for too long, they become depressed."

"My place isn't low…" Hagrid muttered.

"That's only from your perspective." Kyle explained patiently, "In just one year, a three-headed dog grows to three meters tall, with a body length of over five meters. By then, it won't even be able to turn around in here."
