Chapter 9 - A glimpse of the truth

As I settled into my room, I let out a gentle sigh, feeling the weight of the day's events slowly lifting off my shoulders as I turned the door handle . Just as I was about to relax, I heard a soft voice in front of me.

"Jennie, I came looking for you and I decided to wait , dear, how was your day?" Miss Lily asked, her voice warm and comforting.

I turned to see Miss Lily sitting in the armchair by the window, a gentle smile on her face. She was a kind soul, with a heart full of love and compassion. Her presence was a balm to my frazzled nerves, and I felt a weird sense of relief wash over me.

"It was...eventful ," I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral. Miss Lily's eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"Tell me more, dear. What happened?"

I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But something about Miss Lily's gentle demeanor put me at ease, and I found myself pouring out the story of my encounter with the young master.

"And then he warned me about the invitation cards," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, everything came crashing down me and I felt tears dropped from eyes.

"He was so intense, Miss Lily. I felt like I was in a lot of trouble."

Miss Lily's expression softened. "Oh, Jennie, you're shaking. Come here, dear."

She opened her arms, and I walked into them, feeling a sense of comfort and security. She stroked my hair, her touch gentle and soothing.

"You're safe now, Jennie," she said. "You're safe with me."

As I looked up at her, I felt a sense of gratitude towards her. "Thank you, Miss Lily. You're always so kind to me."

"But the staff can be really mean sometimes. Some of them seem to enjoy making my life harder."

Miss Lily's eyes sparkled with understanding. "I'm sorry to hear that, dear. But I'm sure there are some staff members who are kind to you."

I nodded, thinking of Sophia and Mark's dramatic encounter . "Yeah, some of them seem nice. But it's hard to know who to trust."

Miss Lily's expression softened. "Just be yourself, dear. You'll find out who your true friends are."

I hesitated, wanting to tell Miss Lily about the strange phenomenon I observed with the staff's eyes. But something held me back. Miss Lily's eyes seemed...different, too. Not quite normal. I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

I decided to try to focus on my job and not bother about the young master and staff drama .

Miss Lily's expression softened. "Oh, Jennie, you're doing a great job. Just focus on your work and don't worry about anything else."

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. "You're right, Miss Lily. I'll just focus on my job and try to stay out of trouble."

As we sat there in silence, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Miss Lily's presence was a balm to my frazzled nerves, and I felt grateful for her comfort and support.

"I should let you rest, dear," Miss Lily said, standing up. "You have a big day tomorrow."

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. "Thank you, Miss Lily. For everything."

Miss Lily smiled and kissed my forehead. "Anytime, dear. Now get some rest."

As she left the room, I felt a sense of gratitude towards her. She was a true friend, and I was lucky to have her in my life.

I decided to take Miss Lily's advice and focus on my job. I would put aside my curiosity about the young master and the ball, and just concentrate on doing my work to the best of my ability.

With a newfound sense of determination, I settled in for a good night's bath, , I headed to the bathroom to take a warm bath. The warm water, and the scent of the soap filled the background created a calming atmosphere. I sank into the warm water , feeling my muscles relax.

As I soaked in the bath, I let out a deep breath, feeling the stress and tension melt away. The warm water enveloped me, and I closed my eyes, letting the peacefulness of the moment wash over me in.

After a while, I got out of the bath, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I wrapped myself in a towel and got dressed in comfortable clothes, ready to face the day ahead and to face whatever challenges tomorrow might bring.

As I sat on my bed, I reached for my phone, checking for any messages. My heart skipped a beat as I hoped to see a text from someone special. But my screen was blank, except for the usual social media notifications.

A pang of disappointment hit me. Was I really that invisible? I thought about my colleagues at my former workspace . Had they forgotten about me already?

I sighed, feeling a little sad. Maybe I was just a fleeting thought in their busy life

I put my phone aside, trying to shake off the feeling of disappointment. I couldn't help but wonder if I was just a temporary addition for the company. Had they already forgotten about our encounter?

As I sat there, lost in thought, I heard a gentle knock on the door. I replied, "You can come in." It was Emily, one of the gardeners I had met earlier. She walked briefly to the bed and sat down, her long, silky black hair bouncing with each step. She smiled warmly and handed me a small package.

"Hey, Jennie! I saw Miss Lily leaving your room, and I thought I'd drop by to check on you. I brought you some tea and cookies. I hope you're feeling better," Emily said, her eyes sparkling with kindness.

I smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Emily. "Thank you, Emily. That's so sweet of you. I'm feeling a bit better now, thanks to Miss Lily's advice."

Emily nodded, sitting down beside me on the bed, her bright flowery sundress a stark contrast to the dimly lit room. "Miss Lily is a wonderful person. She always knows just what to say to make you feel better."

We chatted for a while, discussing everything from our jobs to our favorite books. Emily was easy to talk to, and I found myself opening up to her in ways I hadn't expected.

As the conversation flowed, I realized that Emily might be someone I could trust. Maybe she could help me uncover more about the mysterious events at the estate.

"Emily, can I ask you something?" I said, hesitating for a moment.

"Of course, Jennie! What's on your mind?" Emily replied, her eyes curious.

I took a deep breath, deciding to trust Emily with my concerns. "I've noticed something strange about the staff's eyes. They seem...different. And Miss Lily's eyes seem different too. Do you know what might be going on?"

Emily's expression changed, and she glanced around the room nervously. "Jennie, We shouldn't talk about this, the less you know the better for you."

My heart skipped a beat as I wondered what Emily meant. What secrets was she hiding? And what lay ahead for me at the estate?

"Let's go to the garden," Emily whispered, standing up. "You haven't been to there since you came to the estate."

I nodded, following Emily out of the room. We walked in silence, the only sound being the soft crunch of gravel beneath our feet. The garden was a breathtaking sight, with flowers blooming in every color of the rainbow. Roses, lavender, and sunflowers towered above us, their sweet fragrance filling the air. A small pond reflected the moonlight, its calm surface broken only by the occasional ripple caused by the koi fish swimming beneath.

As we strolled along the winding path, the massive garden unfolded before us like a canvas of green and vibrant colors. Towering trees, their branches heavy with leaves, provided shade and shelter from the world beyond the estate's walls. Benches, strategically placed beneath the trees or beside the pond, invited us to sit and linger.

We sat down on a bench, surrounded by a burst of colorful blooms. Emily turned to me with a serious expression. "Jennie, I think this is the most beautiful part of the estate ...Am I right?"

I nodded, the air was filled with the scent of nature . "Wow, Emily? It really beautiful and serene "

Emily glanced around nervously before leaning in close. "It's my favorite place " she whispered, her voice barely audible over the gentle hum of insects in the garden.

As she spoke, the moon rose higher in the sky, casting a silver glow over the garden. The flowers seemed to glow with an otherworldly light, and the koi fish swam lazily in the pond, their scales shimmering like jewels. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, and the sound of crickets provided a soothing background hum.

As we sat there in the serene garden, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The beauty of nature seemed to calm my nerves, and Emily's presence made me feel more at ease
