Chapter 14: Before the World Gets Bigger

Before Aven went to kindergarten, the Silvertone house changed in subtle ways.

Not in structure.

But in rhythm.

Alder – The One Who Refused Distance

Alder understood something before anyone explained it.

Something was changing.

Aven was not leaving yet—but the idea of it already unsettled him.

So he stayed closer.

Closer than before.

If she moved, he followed immediately.

If she was held by Hazel, he insisted on being nearby.

If she was asleep, he sat beside her crib until he eventually dozed off too.

One evening, Aven reached for a toy on her own.

Alder stared at her.

Then quietly placed it into her hands.

"…Aven can do it," he said softly.

It wasn't question.

It was acceptance.

Aven paused.

Then nodded slightly.

That small moment stayed with him longer than it should have.

Ethan – Quiet Preparation

Ethan began watching Aven more carefully.

Not because she was changing—

but because she was about to.

One night, he asked Luca a question.

"Kindergarten is safe?"

Luca looked at him.

"Yes."

Ethan paused.

Then nodded.

"…good."

After that, he started "training" in his own way again.

Not physically.

But mentally.

Observing.

Learning.

As if preparing for something he couldn't fully explain.

Aaron – Absolute Chaos (As Usual)

Aaron reacted differently.

He didn't understand kindergarten fully.

But he understood one thing:

Aven would be around other children.

"Aven will have friends?" he asked loudly.

No one answered properly.

So he decided:

"I will be her best friend first!"

Then immediately tried to "practice being a kindergarten friend" by following her everywhere and narrating everything he did.

Aven tolerated it.

Barely.

Ian – Silent Adjustment

Ian changed the least outwardly.

But he began sitting closer to Aven during quiet moments.

Longer pauses.

Less movement.

As if storing time before it became limited.

Hazel – Watching Too Carefully

Hazel noticed all of it.

All the attachment.

All the quiet dependence forming around Aven.

But she didn't stop it.

She simply observed.

And occasionally held Aven a little longer than necessary.

Aven's Thought

I'm not the same as when I arrived…

She didn't say it aloud.

But she knew it.

She was no longer only observing.

She was being observed.

By her family.

By the world that was slowly approaching.
