Chapter 28 - OPERATION: TRUST

Evah struggles with a heavy burden—the flash drive in her possession, containing dangerous knowledge that could change everything. As she navigates the treacherous world around her, she becomes increasingly paranoid about whom to trust. In a place where loyalty is fragile, she watches everyone closely, trying to uncover the truth behind the mysterious woman she saw that night and a deadly project that could cost countless lives.

With few allies and no clear path, Evah's thoughts turn to the Grand Covenant Order, a powerful organization with the potential to stop the chaos. But even then, the question remains: can she trust anyone, or is she already too deep in a game she can't control? As she seeks answers, a startling discovery threatens to upend everything she thought she knew, and a terrifying new figure enters her life, shrouded in mystery.

Evah's world is collapsing, and the stakes are higher than ever. Will she find the truth in time—or will it find her first?

Trust is something freely given, not demanded. But how often do we place it in the hands of people who don't deserve it? Betrayal, after all, is one of our deepest fears. How do we know whom to trust? Is it their kindness, their generosity, or their honesty? But how can we ever be sure those traits are genuine? In truth, we never really know who we can rely on. We can only hope that the ones we choose to trust are worthy of it.

The moonlight filtered through the window, casting a cold, distant glow across the room. It seemed so far removed from her own turmoil, an outsider to her inner chaos. Yet, despite the chill it brought, there was a strange comfort in its presence—silent and watchful, it bore witness to her fear, yet reminded her that she was still alive. For now, at least.

She turned the flash drive over and over in her hand, its smooth surface heavy with meaning. It felt like a small, insignificant object, yet it carried the weight of her future—or her destruction. The knowledge it held lingered, a presence she couldn't ignore. She knew she couldn't sit on this information much longer. But who could I trust?

For the next few days, Evah kept a careful watch over everything: the movement of every person, from the patients in building 3 to the attending doctors. She studied the findings, conditions, and even the exact times when the director left for the day. She was hunting for any clue about the woman in the dress she had seen that night. She needed to uncover their identities, feel out who could be trusted in a world where trust was so fragile.

Her eyes followed the elites in the building—people in positions of power, discussing a new project, a new branch to be built in the 4th district of Y'Ruen. A sprawling, money-sucking pit that would cost more lives than anyone cared to admit. Who were they really trying to save?

I need to tell someone—someone high enough to stop this. But who? The director was too powerful, and even considering the police felt like a fool's errand.

Going to the authorities would be disastrous. The hospital had too many connections within law enforcement. No, she needed someone who would actually do something, someone who could bring real change. One name stood out: The Grand Covenant Order. She had heard both good and bad things about them, like any organization. But this was a gamble, and it was her only hope. If the CGO was on their side, it was hopeless.

Yuka. She realized that she could ask her whether The Order in the country was reliable. Yuka, like any other member of a world organization, understood that politics played a huge role. Who sat at the top mattered.

With a sense of finality, she grabbed her phone, ready to head up to the upper roof. There were no cameras there, and she could speak freely. Her mind was a maelstrom of panic and confusion, but one thing was clear— I need to ask Yuka.

Just a few steps from the door, something caught her eye through a small glass window. She'd never noticed that door before. It had always seemed like an unused storage room, filled with clutter and chemicals. But now, she saw shadows moving inside. People.

The door opened to a conference room. The director sat at the head of the table, surrounded by other executives. Across from them, with her back to Evah, was the woman from that night. Her face remained hidden, but her presence—Evah would never forget it. There was something in her aura, something unmistakable.

And there, seated across from her, was a man in uniform—the highest-ranking officer in law enforcement.

Evah froze. The weight of the flash drive in her pocket suddenly felt like a thousand tons. She knew—she knew—they were discussing it. The project. The one she had uncovered. They knew everything, they were part of it.

What do I do?

The walls seemed to close in around her, swirling in a kaleidoscope of colors. Their faces twisted, contorting into monstrous shapes, reaching for her like specters. In that instant, everything went black.

It was a dream.

Evah gasped, jerking awake. She was back in the gray-walled room, the sterile scent of Erion filling her lungs. She was safe. At least, physically.

That's right, I already quit. The relief was palpable, and she let out a shaky breath as she sank back into the bed. But the details of the dream felt too real, like they had been plucked from her own thoughts. How could she stop this madness? The truth weighed heavily on her chest, and the sleepless nights made her feel more complicit, more responsible for the horrors unfolding around her.

The medicine. The one they'd been working on. The one that would cure everything. She thought about it again. Had they perfected it? But then, a horrifying realization gripped her.

Yuka.

She hadn't been able to tell Yuka. It was too dangerous. If Yuka knew, she would go digging for the truth too, and Evah knew that would lead her down a path she couldn't control. I need that medicine for Yuka.

Where is she?

Erion wouldn't even tell her. Can I really trust him? Why won't he tell me where Yuka is? What if they did something to her?
