Shisui POV
As we approached the new Uchiha compound in the village proper, we took our time to interact with smiling clan members and observe our surroundings. The atmosphere was electric. It was a jarring sight because so many of our kin were running around in a hurry, their faces split by wide and genuine smiles. It felt weird. I had spent my entire life around these people, and I had never seen them look so light.
Our clan doesn't usually do a lot of smiling. We are a people of stoic dignity and quiet intensity, but today that reserve had shattered into a celebration that felt almost frantic. Kaen looked as confused as I felt. His head tilted back and forth like a lost puppy trying to make sense of a new world. We navigated the bustling compound streets until we finally reached the Clan Head's manor.
The moment we arrived, the tension in my chest eased for a heartbeat. Itachi was in the courtyard playing with Sasuke. He was chasing his younger brother and purposely slowing his pace so that Sasuke, who was laughing and screaming in pure delight, felt like he was actually winning the race.
I smiled at the scene, but my focus shifted. Because I am used to processing details at high speeds, I caught it. For a fraction of a second, a distant and soul-deep sadness washed over Kaen's face.
I sighed inwardly.
Not many knew, but Kaen had an older brother once. He had sacrificed himself for the village during a high-stakes mission, holding the line alone so his team could escape with intelligence that shifted the tide of the conflict. He was a hero by any standard. Yet, because the Uchiha were ostracized after the Nine-Tails attack, his brother's sacrifice was treated like an insult rather than a badge of honor. That bitterness had radicalized Kaen's parents. It turned their grief into a weapon against the very village their eldest son had died to protect.
I only knew the details because I'd seen the ANBU records. His parents had placed all their hopes on the older brother, a formidable shinobi who possessed the limitless potential typical of our bloodline. When he fell, the bitterness of that loss and the crushing weight of those untethered expectations were transferred entirely to Kaen.
I didn't have the right to force him to talk about it, so I stayed silent. If he ever feels ready, he'll speak. For now, he had clearly built a mental barrier between that memory and the person he is trying to be.
Finally, Itachi noticed me. A huge smile appeared on his face as he caught up to Sasuke, lifting him up while Sasuke flailed like a fish and laughed. Then he ran toward me.
"Shisui, you came back!"
I smiled back. "Yeah, we just did. I expected to find you at the ceremony."
Itachi grinned, and I panicked internally. Itachi never grinned. With the exception of smiling and laughing when he was spending time with his younger brother, he was almost always a wall of stoic intensity, carrying the maturity of someone twice his age. I narrowed my eyes in suspicion, wondering what had changed during our time away that could possibly make him look so satisfied. It was a look that felt completely out of place on a face usually defined by the heavy burdens of the world.
Itachi was about to speak, but Sasuke shouted in a cute voice, "Big brother Shisui, help me!"
I immediately started tickling him while Itachi held him hostage to my torture. The entire atmosphere lightened, filled with Sasuke's frantic, cute laughs that echoed through the room. After some time, Itachi finally set Sasuke down and ushered one of the servants over to take care of him.
Sasuke complained, "Brother, why will you not play with me?"
Itachi replied, "Sorry, Sasuke. Me and big brother Shisui have important things to discuss with our father."
Sasuke grumbled as he was led away by servants. They tried to steal his attention, which wasn't hard once they pulled some sweets out of their pockets.
Itachi's eyes sharpened as he looked at Kaen. They were close in age, with Kaen being slightly older, but Itachi's talent and rank as a Jonin placed him on a whole other pedestal than any other kid his age. That was not even mentioning his status as the son of the Uchiha clan head. Kaen met his eyes and didn't flinch or tense. Since he had awakened his three-tomoe Sharingan, his confidence had shot through the roof. Itachi noticed it and responded with a pleased nod.
Finally, Itachi spoke. "Let's go meet our father."
We moved together toward the large tea room nearby. As the doors slid open, we found the Clan Head surrounded by a whirlwind of activity. He was speaking with an authority and gravitas that had been unfamiliar to the Uchiha for a long time. The air in the room felt heavy, charged with a power that demanded silence. The moment he saw us, he ushered us with his eyes to sit and be comfortable.
We stayed there for what felt like hours. Time blurred as the Clan Head dealt with a relentless stream of tasks related to the clan and, strangely enough, some for the village. As the orange glow of the sunset faded from the paper doors, the room began to fill with the cool, deep shadows of the evening. After the sun dipped well below the horizon, and some time after the compound's lanterns flickered to life outside, the Clan Head finally cleared the room.
"Leave me for now and empty the room. Our victorious clan members have returned, and it would be rude to keep them waiting much longer."
His eyes locked onto the three of us, signaling us out from the crowd. Every person moved fast, bowing out of the room. Once the doors slid closed, we all dropped to the mats in a deep, formal bow.
"Fugaku-sama," I said, my voice steady but quiet. "We have returned."
"Rise."
The command was firm, but when we looked up, a rare and genuine smile stretched across his face.
"You did great, Shisui. You have no idea how instrumental you and your team were to what we have achieved."
I narrowed my eyes in confusion. I knew we were doing much better than before, and as my team left for the Chunin Exams, the Uchiha were slowly integrating back into the village. However, something fundamental had shifted during our long stay in Suna.
"What is happening, Fugaku-sama?" I asked with careful curiosity.
He ushered us to sit with a sharp gesture. "During your leave, we dismantled a massive Suna spy operation within the village. It earned us a mountain of goodwill with the people of Konoha, both civilians and shinobi alike."
My eyes widened in disbelief. I racked my mind, trying to remember if I had noticed even a flicker of that. Then, a face flashed in my mind.
Sena.
It wasn't based on evidence, only my instinct. "Was this done with the help of the Yamanaka?"
Fugaku stayed silent for a long moment before nodding slowly. A sharp sting of frustration seeped into my heart. First Kaen, then Noa, and now Sena. Why was my team keeping so many secrets from me? I felt a wave of sadness wash over me. My students should trust me with everything, yet it seemed they all had worlds hidden away from my sight.
I knew I wouldn't get the details if I pushed now, so I stayed silent. Itachi noticed my mood and took up the explanation.
"The Yamanaka helped us rebuild the clan's image without sparing any expense. Even the civilians are favorable toward us now. We have multiple Uchiha included in high-level missions, and some of our best are joining the Academy as mentors to teach the next generation."
My head was spinning. "What? Why are they doing so much for us? What have we paid for this, or if we haven't paid yet, what will the cost be?"
Fugaku nodded, his expression approving. "As expected, your mind looks for the full picture. This was Itachi's first question too."
Itachi shifted slightly at his father's praise. Fugaku leaned forward, his gaze piercing. "Do you trust me to keep the clan's best interests at heart, Shisui?"
Complicated thoughts ran through my head. I knew the Clan Head didn't always agree with the radicals, but he had been close to their side before we left. The village's increasing hostility had left him no other option but to lean toward their cause. Now, he looked like a man who had seen a glimpse of hope and grasped it with both hands. He was leading us out of the shadows and back into the light.
"I do, Fugaku-sama," I replied, bowing deeply once more.
Fugaku smiled genuinely at my show of trust before he nodded and turned his attention to Kaen. "I heard that you evolved your Sharingan to the three-tomoe stage."
Kaen nodded like a frantic chicken, his voice cracking with a mix of raw pride and nerves. "Yes, Fugaku-sama! It was a Suna genin who pushed me to the brink. But do not worry, I made the Uchiha proud. All the villages know we are a power to be reckoned with. The Sharingan lives on to haunt our enemies' dreams!"
Fugaku laughed lightly. "That's the spirit. Well done. Your achievements have forced the village to raise their heads and acknowledge what an Uchiha can do."
Kaen looked like he was on the verge of tears. He pressed his forehead against the floor. "Your words honor me, Fugaku-sama."
I was pleased with Kaen's growth, but as I opened my mouth to speak, the door slid open with a sudden, violent snap. Kaen, Itachi, and I tensed in unison as the Konoha Elders, Homura and Koharu, stepped into the light.
Their expressionless faces were like masks of stone as they looked past us, fixing their gaze entirely on Fugaku. The warmth of our reunion vanished immediately, replaced by a heavy silence that filled the space between us.
"Congratulations, Fugaku-dono," Homura said. "The Daimyo has made his decision. He has officially appointed you as the Fifth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf."
