Chapter 173
Missy mentioned she needed to go to the bathroom, so I asked Paige to take her to one inside the house, which was empty (even with the expansion and the huge bathrooms we had built, the women's restroom was still always crowded).
Pippa spotted Lauren and told me she was going to talk to her for a bit. She gave me a kiss and walked away.
That left me with the remaining group: Miley, Lilly, Jackson, and Mikayla.
As we were about to chat, the familiar sound of "The Climb" began playing through the speakers. The opening chords echoed gently across the venue, and a few people immediately turned their heads, recognizing the melody.
I noticed Miley struggling not to sing along, trying not to break her disguise, while right next to her, Mikayla pulled a face like she had just bitten into a sour lemon—but quickly forced a smile.
A funny idea popped into my head.
"Hey Mikayla, I heard you met Hannah Montana before," I began, using the song as the perfect excuse.
Carly had once mentioned something about their interview.
"Yes, I did. She is such a nice and intelligent person," Mikayla responded through a strained grin.
"Really? Because I always got the impression she seemed kind of dumb," I added, surprised.
Lilly choked on her drink, nearly spilling it.
"Cute boy say what?" Miley said with her grave voice, making a face that was half disbelief, half annoyance.
"Come on, Miley, you might enjoy her music, but she totally gives airhead vibe," I pointed out.
Now Miley was the one forcing a smile, while Jackson burst out laughing. "She totally does," he agreed without hesitation.
Miley gave Jackson a warning glare, but before she could defend herself (or Hannah), Mikayla jumped in. "I was trying to be polite before, but Hannah didn't really seem like the brightest one," she said, laughing, enjoying our conversation.
I placed a friendly arm over Miley's shoulder and said, "Hannah has an amazing voice," which seemed to slightly ease her annoyance. But I followed it with, "But her songs? Has she even graduated the fifth grade yet?"
As I turned to the side, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Lilly holding Miley back and whispering, "Don't forget the cover." When I turned back to Miley again, she gave me a bright smile.
I turned to Mikayla with a smirk. "Mikayla, you can keep this going with Miley—she's too polite but seems to agree with it. I'm gonna say hi to a friend who just arrived."
Miley was looking at me like she was throwing daggers, but she faked another smile and continued the conversation with Mikayla
Don't worry, I'll give you two good songs to feature on—consider it payment for my enjoyment.
I made my way through the crowd until I reached someone in a Spider-Woman costume. "Hey Brit, nice costume," I said, giving her a hug.
She was also wearing a brunette wig.
"Great party! Soon, even the Hollywood crowd is going to be jealous," she joked.
I leaned in and whispered, "It has us. And I'll tell you a secret—there's a rising singer here too."
"Who?" Britney asked, curious.
"See that brunette over there?" I gestured, pointing toward Miley.
"The one talking with Mike...la... or something?" Britney asked.
"Mikayla," I corrected gently. "Didn't know you knew her."
"I don't. I watched Wizards of Waverly Place first episode. It was good, but I still prefer your friends' show—iCarly," Britney answered casually, tilting her head slightly.
"Anyway, that girl is actually Hannah Montana," I revealed.
"Wow, so we've got the singers of the current top three Billboard songs here?" she said, laughing.
Yeah, 'Closer' just overtook 'Dark Horse' as #1, and 'The Climb' is far behind at #3—probably about to be passed by 'U Got It Bad' from Usher. And maybe even by my other music released yesterday, 'Cheap Thrills.' I made a third collaboration with Sia (though it has a more electronic vibe than the original).
"Yes. Ironically, you're the only one in disguise here. And Miley doesn't know about us—much less that we know her secret," I added.
"Why did she look annoyed at you?" Britney asked, intrigued.
"I might have said that Hannah doesn't seem very intelligent," I replied innocently.
Britney laughed and said, "You are soo bratty sometimes..."
Just then, Regina and Cher walked up
"Hey," Regina greeted, trying to sound casual.
"Hi, Brit," Cher added with a little wave, both of them clearly making an effort to act normal in front of her.
Regina handed me a microphone, and I stepped forward.
"Good night everyone, hope you're all having fun!" I announced.
A cheer erupted from the crowd in response.
"DJ, turn it up! Let's take this party even higher!" I shouted, grinning.
Then a beat kicked in, and I began to sing:
