Chapter 40 - Escape - (2)

That only meant one thing: if I was going to try, it had to be tomorrow, before the others came back.

I didn't sleep that night. Instead, I kept counting the hours, waiting. Every night after 1:00 a.m., there was always a buzzer, a signal that someone was coming. One night, I pretended to be asleep and heard a guard enter to check if everything was in order. That detail stayed with me.

Rescuing Suhee wasn't just part of the plan, it was the plan. The guard couldn't tell me her exact location, but he did was able to tell the block she was in. Block C. The biggest block in the facility. That gave me both a lead and a problem.

If I wanted to find her, I would have to search through Block C while fighting the numbered.

The first step, though, was getting out of my cell. The electric doors were always active when no guard was present, which meant escaping was nearly impossible, Nearly. Zero assured me he could help me absorb some of the electricity, at least long enough for me to work the lock.

That was where Mr. Park's training came in. He had prepared us like secret agents, teaching us even the small things, like how to pick a lock. I had a paper clip I'd taken from the guard. That was my chance.

Zero did his best to shield me, but some of the current slipped past. Sparks tore through my body. Still, I forced my hands steady, and finally, the lock gave way.

An alarm instantly started to ring. I had no time to waste. But after weeks of training in that cell, I felt ready, I would fight my way out.

Two objectives drove me forward: rescue Suhee, and uncover information about the other "GID" facilities.

I sprinted through the hallways, following the directions the guard had given me. Turn after turn blurred past until I reached an intersection. I froze. I couldn't remember which way was right. I chose the left.

The silence behind me was unsettling. No pursuit. And that, more than anything, was troubling.
