Eric was in the middle of briefing Sarah. Gently. Awkwardly. Preparing her for the fact that whatever this thing was between them it couldn't last more than a day.
He hadn't even gotten the first sentence out before there was a knock on the door.
Sarah practically leaped to answer it.
"Gosh," he muttered under his breath. "This girl is something else."
Did I really just agree to be in a relationship with her?
He sighed. At this rate, we'll break up before the day even ends.
Then the door opened.
And he heard that voice.
The voice that made his heart stutter in his chest.
The voice that pulled the air right out of his lungs.
The voice that reminded him of every bad decision wrapped in soft lips and stolen glances.
Anne.
And then Sarah's voice rang out, confident and clueless:
"Who are you? Where's Eric? I'm his girlfriend."
The word hit him like a brick.
Girlfriend.
