Chapter 39 - The contract trap

The moment Roonie heard the knocking sound, he stood up.

Veyne waved his hand. "Don't worry, Senior. I have ordered food from the canteen."

Veyne got up and said to one of the other bodyguards, "Ah, can you give me a hand, please?"

The bodyguard glanced at his partner and nodded. "Sure."

Veyne walked ahead while trying to piece together everything. There were a few things that did not make sense to him.

The way Roonie was acting, giving him that messy contract and even coming to the door—it was like he was trying to make moves before others could approach him.

Veyne opened the door and grabbed all the food from the delivery guy.

He was sure that Roonie would not act like that with outsiders.

Heck, he wasn't even sure if others would want to mess with the Cobra family here just because of him.

One thing Veyne was clear about was his current value in others' eyes. What he showed during the raid was flashy and a bit unique in the sense that he relied on basic maneuvers most of the time.

But it was nowhere near a big enough performance to have Roonie rush to his dorm.

Heck, even in Blackwater Village, he was barely in the top ten, and there were hundreds of beginner villages just in the Rowali Kingdom; forget about the entire server.

His current position was just a bit higher than your average elite. Nothing special.

Though others might rate him a bit higher or lower depending on their experience in the game, it was nowhere close to those at the star level.

As Veyne closed the door. It became clear to him that Roonie's situation might not be as simple as he thought.

There was a high chance someone from the Akinu had contacted Roonie about him.

Then… does someone from Akinu want me? Mmm. That would explain that absurd contract. After all, using force wouldn't work against those from the Cobra family.

A few big names came to his mind that might be interested in him, especially those who didn't want Roonie to have any powerful members.

Veyne placed the food down on the table and said, "Senior, why don't we eat as we discuss?"

Roonie looked at the massive amount of food and nodded his head. "Sure, why not?"

Veyne smiled at Roonie.

The way Roonie was going along with him, it started to become clear to Veyne that what he thought might be true.

For a few minutes, none of them said anything as they continued to eat in silence. He glanced at Roonie and then at the contract.

The more he looked at it, the more he could sense it was a trap.

A trap for Roonie to waste his resources on him.

He glanced at Zack and saw that the guy was quietly eating the food. Where the hell was that aggression he showcased during their last meeting?

He was sure Zack knew he wasn't worth that much, and still, him staying that quiet… it was like Zack wanted him to accept that contract.

Veyne couldn't help but smile as he licked his spoon clean.

He decided to break the silence and asked, "Um, Senior, can I know the reason you are offering me such a big deal?"

Before Roonie could say anything, Zack shouted at him, "Even with so much, you're asking questions?"

Veyne smiled and said, "Actually, Senior Roonie, I have another deal in mind. I think you'll like it much more than this."

Zack once again shouted, "So, you're asking for more?"

Even Roonie frowned at him.

Veyne stared into Roonie's eyes and said with a smile, "Can we discuss the deal privately?"

Zack stood up and pointed at him. "You—"

Roonie waved at Zack. "Shut up." He rubbed his forehead and said, "Sure."

The moment he said that, both guards looked at Zack.

Zack stared at Roonie for a moment and asked, "Where should I go?"

Veyne pointed toward his room. "That room. The door is open."

Zack glanced at Roonie, then walked toward the room.

Veyne looked at both bodyguards.

Roonie waved his hand. "Treat them like air. You can speak your mind here."

Veyne nodded. He grabbed the contract and asked, "Why are you willing to drag me into this trap?"

Roonie stared at him and clicked his tongue. "Why are you saying so much nonsense? I'm giving you so much. Just sign it."

Veyne threw the contract to the side and said, "Oh, come on. Both of us know I'm not worth that much. If you have so much, just give it to me without this contract. I won't sign my death warrant."

Veyne wasn't an idiot.

He had dealt with hundreds of shady guilds in his past life. A common thing they all used was these over-the-top contracts, which, once signed, would trap you forever.

It was the same with this contract.

With the current condition of the Kiyon Guild, it was only a matter of time before it was going to fall. And once that happened, it wouldn't be just Roonie's loss; even the Akinu Guild would get involved.

If he were to sign this contract today, then when that time came, anyone could use it against him—to make him the scapegoat who led Kiyon to its disaster.

The only reason Roonie wanted him to sign the contract was to tie him to the Kiyon Guild.

He'd have to do everything for the guild's survival. And the moment it fell, he'd go down with it.

It was kind of an interesting strategy—to tie your partner with one of your weaknesses. They'd work to support your weak spot while you could focus on other things.

Roonie clicked his tongue and sighed. "Tch. It failed, I—"

Veyne cut him off. "Oh, come on. Didn't I tell you I have another offer for you? It's not like I don't want to work with you."

Roonie raised an eyebrow and asked, "Oh? Sure. Tell me what you have."

Veyne pointed to Roonie and said, "How about you adopt me as your little game brother?"

Roonie spewed the food from his mouth. He started at Veyne and blinked. "What… the hell does that even mean?"

Silence.
