Chapter : 3 : Trainer Aptitude Exam ( Part: 2 ) :
Location : Celadon City Pokemon Centre :
" Ding ! Dong ! Ding ! Dong ! "
" Alright ! everyone please put down your pen , stop writing and hand over the answer sheets . "
With the examination bell ringing finally the two hour long exam came to an end .
As the young candidates one by one gave their answer sheets to the chansies there could be seen a multitude of different mix reactions on their faces ranging from both excitement to some disappointment .
And from the majority of it was quiet clear that the exam had not gone well for at least most of the people here .
Even David himself found the question paper to be quite tough for beginners .
Although he did not face any difficulties in solving the questions due to his early preparations it must be said that the pattern of the questions surprised him a little bit .
The question paper contained three types of questions divided in three parts .
The first part contain questions about the rules and regulations of the Pokemon league and what are the duties and responsibilities of a Pokemon trainer .
This part was specifically designed so is to create awareness among the young trainers about the rules and regulations of the Pokemon league .
Especially when it came to how to treat pokemons and other trainers .
In past it had been seen that there were many instances were new trainers did not take the league regulations seriously which resulted into serious consequences .
This was due to the lack of awareness in the earlier systems which was then fixed a few years ago .
The second part of the test was related to the knowledge about various types of regional pokemons in Kento Region.
This included Pokemon descriptions , where they can be found , etc .
Previously many cases it was seen that many young trainers fell victim to unfortunate situations due to their lack of knowledge of the area they were going and what pokemons lived there .
They were basically going blind folded in a reality that could very well be dengerous.
And caused not only harm to themselves , their Pokemon but also the natural habitats they were going .
As such this part of the test was also specifically designed to help the young trainers identify and know about the pokemons in the region that will help them in their journey .
But more importantly it will help them to understand their own Pokemons and prevent them from doing somethings that may be dengerous .
The third part of the exam consisted questions related to various things about different regions than Kento .
This part of the question paper was not very difficult as it only consisted of 10% of the entire questions and was given a lax .
Although David did not know the exact reasons for this he had some rough guesses .
First of all it was because most of the beginners who start their journey here would most likely not reach that level where they will be even able to join the Kento league tournament let alone going to other regions .
Secondly it would make the exam two difficult to pass for the beginers after all training to become Pokemon trainers not professors or teachers .
Moreover a Pokemon trainer needs to learn various amount of things while travelling himself / herself .
So while the test was conducted to ensure they have the basic minimum knowledge required to start their journey and stay safe it was not there to act as an encyclopedia of their journey .
" Well at least my theoretical exam went well. "
David thought to himself aloud as he stood up from his chair .
While he was not a particularly good student in his previous life .
But his performance also depended which subject he was interested in learning .
And when it came to learning about Pokemon so that he can become a Pokemon trainer he was quite diligent .
It was certainly not like in his maths classes when he used - substitution jutsu ( in his mind ) to escape .
So most of the questions in test was something he could answer .
" Everyone now that you are done with the theoretical exam , you need to give your practical exam . "
Nurse Joy after collecting the answer sheets turned towards the group of young people and started speaking .
And although her voice was still soft and caring this time it held a more decisiveness to it .
" For your practical exam all of you will be given a random Pokemon battle match up with any one of your fellow candidates here . "
" Also you will be assigned a random Pokemon before the start of the battle along with whom you will have to fight in your match . "
" It will be a one versus one Pokemon match . "
As she explained the details of the exam everyone looked at each other .
The rules were simple yet it was much harder to accomplish then the theoretical exam.
After all this involves a practical Pokemon battle and they have little to know experience in this field .
Some of them have not even participated in a live Pokemon battle before in their life .
Seeing the hesitation in the faces of the young candidates nurse Joy naturally understood what they were thinking and gave a encouraging smile .
" Don't think too much about winning all losing what matters right now is you do everything you can with your Pokemon partner just give it all you have . "
Hearing her encouragement hope appeared in everyone's eyes as they looked a little more confident then before .
All though they are still nervous but still it was better than before .
" Alright everyone please follow me to the battle stadium . "
With that little encouragement session over the group led by nurse Joy started to go towards the battle stadium .
When they finally reached the area they saw that the battle stadium was actually a standard open air battle stadium .
There was also a referee who was standing on top of a platform .
" Alright ! Now that we are all here , I will call out two names from now on and they will come forward to take their random Pokeballs and go to the stadium . "
" The rest of the students for now can sit in the audience sector and look at the matches. "
After she said that nurse Joy took out a list of names and called the name of the first two people to come forward while rest of the candidates went back to sit on the audience seats .
David was also one of them as his name was not yet called .
After he say down he focus his attention on the match below .
For the first battle the two candidates were two girls - one of whom was a citizen of the Celadon City and the other girl came from a nearby town .
After greeting each other with a warm handshake they took their random Pokeballs and went to the stadium for battle .
The girl from the Celadon City got a Rattata as her random Pokemon .
While the other girl from the neighbouring town got an Oddish .
This validated the point that the Pokemon league will not give out stronger pokemons for this random matches and all the pokemons here are in their base stage .
" Let's see what kind of trainers my generation is going to send . "
David was a little excited at this moment because among these people perhaps in the future one of them would become his rival .
So he was quite interested in seeing this first battles .
However his hopes were quickly dashed away as the battle that followed were quite boring to be honest .
Atleast for him it was boring .
Well ! That was to be expected after all neither of them were experienced in Pokemon battles .
And from their constant mistake of not being able to properly coordinate with their pokemon it was clear that this was most likely their first time in a pokemon battle .
There were many times when both of the girls froze at a critical moment when they could have one the battle in a single strike.
And it was not because they were lazy or stupid .
Instead it was simply because they had very little experience before hand .
As such whenever the critical moment came they found themselves at a loss .
If David was to analyse their Pokemon battle in simple terms than it would be a textbook example of a situation where the Pokemon trainers have only learned what to do and what not to do from theoretical lessons but not from practical experience .
While theoretical lessons were important without practical experience one will fall sort at critical moments .
Wait ! Does that mean theoretical lessons are useless ?
No ! Not at all .
Theoretical knowledge give you an advantage by letting you learn from mistakes of various people and yourself so that you don't do that mistake again .
But what David things is that that there should be a balance between the theoretical knowledge and practical experience and one should not outweigh the other .
With that the battle continue for four more minutes before coming to an conclusion .
" Clap! clap ! clap! clap ! "
At the end of the battle it was the girl from the Celadon City who manage to take away the victory by a hair length when her Rattata managed to hit a perfect quick attack against the opposite Oddish knocking her out of the battle .
As soon as the battle ended the referee called the winner of the match and the stadium started to cheer and clap .
Even David joined in this moment with a genuine smile on his face .
All the things about practical experience and others are something they will eventually learn in their journey .
And for now they are still just beginners so obviously they will make mistakes.
But what matters right now is that despite there inexperience both of them including the pokemons battled and performed with all their heart and soul .
And after the battle both of them the girl who won and the girl who lost talked to each other while smiling and shaking hands showing a good sportsmanship spirit .
This truly deserves respect and admiration .
Time Skip : 20 Minutes Later :
After the first match was over the test continue on
And one after another battle happened and while almost all of them where similar to the first one but still it was quite exciting to see .
And then finally it came the time for our Main character to shine .
" Alright David Roy and John Kent please come forward . "
Hearing his name finally coming up David who was getting bored right now got with excitement and quickly ran down the stairs .
" Alright ! Here Pokemon battle here I come ! "
