Chapter 16 - The failed avenger

Roar!!!

A thunderous roar echoed in the valley of Jared-Leto.

The Hydra loomed over Noctis with its mountainous body draped in silver scales that shimmered under the sunlight. Its six eyes glimmered with rage and sorrow.

The Hydra spoke in thunderous voice filled with vengeance. "CRIMSON EYED DEMON! Have you come to slay me as well, like my father and grandfather? If so you are sorely mistaken— because this time you will be the one to fall."

Noctis smirked, "I am disappointed in your knowledge…" Noctis paused, stepping back. "I have been killing your kind for over a century only leaving the female and cubs to ensure you don't go extinct."

A thunderous roar shook the forest of Jared-Leto, the hydra swiped its tail, sending Noctis crashing through the forest. Before he could rise, it uprooted dozens of trees from the ground launching them at him like a barrage of missiles whistling through the air.

Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!

The Hydra steadied itself, its eyes burning red. Its body glowed with a green hue as a barrage of wind stirred around it. Then it lunged at the pile of mangled trees, lifting its front leg high. With a thunderous crash, it brought the limb down—crushing the heap with Noctis still trapped beneath. Blood spread beneath them, staining the earth blood red.

The hydra turned slowly walking towards its layer a fulfilled look spread across its faces. But then—

Crack! Crack!

The hydra looked over it's mountainous body, Noctis stood up like a zombie his back hunch and his hands hung as blood poured out from every part of his body.

He clutched his face as laughter exploded from him. "You… you really thought you could defeat me that easily?"

Noctis straightened himself swiping his hand as a white mask appeared in his hand, a wide black grin spreading across and black star shaped as eyes. He put it on his crimson eyes glimmering through the mask as blue moon markings glowed. His hair slowly turning white.

Noctis's voice cold and deep, "At least you are stronger than your ancestors."

"H-how are you still alive?!" the hydra hissed, stepping back as it turned to face him.

"Fallen— Hero!" Noctis muttered

As a silver blade appeared in his right hand a withered rose rested on the hilt. Noctis pointed it towards the hydra its edges simmering under the sunlight.

"Do, you know how much painful memory this sword invokes?" Noctis said, he brought it close to his neck before swinging it.

Crack! Splattered!

The space around Hydra's body cracked then— blood splattered from the gaping left behind. The Hydra fell to his knees growling staring at Noctis.

Oefh!

The Hydra inhaled, its body glowed in amber, sparks coming out of its mouths. It released a torrent of fire, scorching the earth and reducing the trees into ashes around Noctis. But Noctis only raised his left hand as a portal cracked opened before him and another on top of the Hydra. The torrent of flames passed through them as they came down on the Hydra like a judges hammer.

THUD!

The hydra slammed into the ground its silver scales scorched by its own flame. But the Hydra stood up once more its body trembling breath ragged as its body slowly healed.

Noctis pointed his sword at the Hydra, tilting his head. "You are quite resilient, aren't you? My-Dear-Avenger."

A small black circle formed at the tip of his sword as he brought it down, stopping just a few inches above the ground.

"Black— Heart!"

In the next second, countless vertical portals cracked open around the Hydra. Each expanded slightly—no more than five inches—before collapsing in on itself, leaving behind gaping holes in the beast's body. But… the hydra stood tall its eyes flew amber as it lunged at Noctis with one last desperate move it pinned him down to the ground. Its leg pressed against his chest.

The Hydra squinted its eyes, blood streaming out from its wounds. "Damn you! Why won't you die?" the Hydra paused, its breath ragged. "I know… I will take you with me."

The Hydra stared up opening its maws as its body glowed in amber, wind stirred around it. Then slowly wind swirled around above its head into a ball.

Spark! Spark!

The ball of wind erupted into blue flames like a blue sun. The Hydra swallowed it, its inside burned and twitched the pain unbearable but it endured as it brought it three heads close to Noctis, his mask shimmered.

Blast!

Noctis redirected the Hydra's attack at itself. The Hydra fell to the ground with a thunderous roar as its soul left its body. Noctis lay there soaked with his and the Hydra's blood, his bones aching. His mask fell from his face revealing his unnerving smile once again, his hair and eyes returned to normal as he slowly walked up to the Hydra.

Tap! Tap!Tap!

He leaned on the fallen Hydra's body, "You were quite the opponent my friend. I wish we could have met in an alternate universe where you weren't a Hydra." Noctis tapped the Hydra's body as a black portal opened taking it to the unknown. "And my apologies for taking your life but I need your scales and blood."

Flick!

A humming portal opened before him, leading to his room. Noctis slowly walked through it, his breath ragged, his strength drained, his eyes turning black.

Flop!

Noctis fell onto his bed, and the portal shut behind him. Shadows surrounded him as thin, bony hands reached out to treat his injuries. As the glass tube admitted a warm glow on Noctis, his eyes flickering closed.

Hummm... Hummm...

Noctis found himself in a very familiar plane. A tranquil sky stretched above, and a pulsing ocean below kept him afloat.

"It's been a while, hasn't it, third successor?" a voice spoke, soft and calming.

Noctis looked around, his smile never fading.

"Yeah, it has. We last spoke twenty years ago, when you promised me that the Fourth would fix everything." Noctis paused. "But… was it true? Can the Fourth really bring her dream into reality?"

"Yes—if you can guide him, that is. Otherwise, he will only slay you and leave this world, never to return. And as for your people… they will face the same thing all over again," the voice said softly.

Noctis's smile turned genuine.

"I'll make sure he stays. I'll make him fall in love with this world. I'll make him the strongest and grant him everything I have."

"Noctis… I'm sorry I didn't reach out to you when you needed me," the voice spoke apologetically.

"I don't want to hear anything from you about that." Noctis's voice grew cold. "And I'd rather you not bring up June… or my past, if possible."

Everything around him slowly faded into darkness.
