Chapter 44 - 44. First night at the capital

A FEW HOURS LATER

MICHAEL'S POINT OF VIEW:

I stood there for a moment, staring at the task board, my frustration simmering just below the surface. The city was sprawling around us, full of potential allies and old connections I could easily tap into, but the system had made one thing clear, no outside help. It stung, more than I cared to admit. I'd been here before, walked these streets like they were my own, used every corner to my advantage. But now, all of that every favor I'd ever cashed in, every ally I'd ever made was off limits. It pissed me off. Big time.

I glanced at the others. They seemed to be quietly processing the task ahead, but I could see the unease in their eyes. Even Xavier, who always acted like he had everything under control, had that dark look on his face. He hated being in a position where he didn't know exactly what was going to happen next.

"Guess we're on our own." I muttered, more to myself than anyone else.
