Emma's heart stopped beating.
She felt it happen—one moment her chest was rising and falling normally, and the next, everything went still. But somehow, she was still conscious, still aware.
"Emma!" Kael shouted, but his voice sounded far away.
She looked down at her own body lying on the kitchen floor. Luna was still trapped in that silver-eyed state, speaking in the cosmic voice, but now Emma was floating above them both.
"What's happening to me?" Emma whispered.
"You're dying," said a familiar voice behind her.
Emma spun around and gasped. It was herself—but different. This other Emma had dark hair instead of blonde, and her eyes were filled with shadows. It was Shadow Emma, the dark version of herself that had caused so much trouble years ago.
"You," Emma breathed. "But you were destroyed."
Shadow Emma shook her head. "I was never destroyed. I was waiting. Hiding inside you until this moment."
"Why now?"
