"Hunt for what?" Bai Ning Bing asked.
"Hunt wild beasts, what else?" Fang Yuan said.
They needed resources. Fang Yuan could not enter the Battle Arena, and Bai Ning Bing's earnings from the Battle Arena dwindled day after day. People would just surrender, handing her a gu worm, and then leave. By this point, the excitement of fighting had faded from her heart.
Battling wild beasts for resources was a place where Fang Yuan could still leverage his Rank 5 strength.
He left control over the Beggar Sect to Shang Xin Ci and the three ordinary Reverends as he and Bai Ning Bing flew from Shang Clan City atop the White Form Immortal Snake.
"Over there," Fang Yuan said, pointing to a lake.
"That is an Island Turtle," Bing Bing said, eyes widening.
The Island Turtle was called so because it could grow as big as an island, with vegetation and sometimes small animals growing on its back. Various grades of the Island Turtle were measured by the area of its shell. Ordinary Island Turtles would have an area of 10 Mu or lower, Hundred Beast Kings up to 20 Mu, and Thousand Beast Kings up to 30 Mu.
This was a 40 Mu Island Turtle, meaning it was equivalent to a Myriad Beast King. The main issue with dealing with such a creature was that it was so massive that it was incredibly difficult to take down. While it was true that they could obtain various Rank 4 materials from it, even someone like Bing Bing at her current level would prefer to simply avoid conflict with such a monster.
Fang Yuan's eyes, however, flashed with killing intent as he released a gu worm from his aperture. It expanded into a long black form on the ground near the shore of the Island Turtle: Rank 5 Ink Dragon Gu!
He had not used the Gu during his fight with Liu Nan simply because he saw no need to reveal it. He had also been attempting to avoid using it up until now, mainly because if he used it too much, he would need to feed it, and he could not afford to in his current situation. However, it was not as if he could not let it die if that would allow him to propel this plan forward.
Ink Dragon Gu lashed out at the 40 Mu Island Turtle. Although its shell was extraordinarily tough, Ink Dragon Gu tore away one of its limbs, crawling into the gap formed by it even as the turtle tried to hide in its shell, fearing for its life. It tried to activate its own gu worms to fight back, but before the might of a Rank 5 gu worm found that its defenses were torn through like paper.
Fang Yuan also knew its weaknesses rather well. When he had been a Rank 6 Gu Immortal, one of his Earthly Tribulations had been a 60 Mu Island Turtle. It had been a costly fight against it, but he had eventually one by exploiting gaps in its defense much as he did now and as it did not have any Immortal Gu on it.
'Though, this one's strength cannot even compare to that which I had faced. Naturally, the gap between a mortal and an Immortal is massive, even without any Immortal Gu,' Fang Yuan thought.
Ink Dragon Gu burrowed in deeper, tearing out the turtle's heart and emerging from the hole where its head had been.
The entire fight was over in less than five minute's time.
"There," Fang Yuan said, eyes flashing as he saw what he was after.
Several specks emerged from the 40 Mu Island Turtle, but he captured them using the Spring Autumn Cicada's aura after he descended.
One of them was Island Turtle Strength Gu, giving a person the strength of an Island Turtle. The other was Turtle Carapace Gu, a powerful Rank 4 defensive gu worm. The third was Verdant Canopy Gu, a Rank 3 Wood Path gu worm which allowed one to grow a massive forest, which the turtle was likely using in order to maintain the ecosystem on its back.
Some gu worms had managed to escape, but that was acceptable and within Fang Yuan's calculations. He could not obtain all of them, of course.
In addition, the tortoise's eyes, heart, and shell could all be sold as Rank 4 gu refinement materials.
The animals living on its back were then mercilessly put down by Fang Yuan and Bai Ning Bing.
Bai Ning Bing finally understood what Fang Yuan's plan was. He was going to wander around the wilderness, striking down various Myriad Beast Kings in order to gain materials and gu worms to sell.
The issue was that Myriad Beast Kings weren't all that common in the wild, and those that existed could pose a threat even with the Ink Dragon Gu. Some of them were not easy to take down, and with others, their gu worms fled before they could be captured.
Still, it could not be said that Thousand Beast Kings were useless prey.
As it was, Bai Ning Bing had gotten slightly bored while fighting in the arena, finding very few fights that could actually cause her heart to race.
Out here in the wilderness, where danger lurked at nearly every corner, it was a far more fitting battlefield. If only she had not lost Rank 4 Frost Arrow Gu, she could've contributed more to these efforts. Although they agreed to share spoils, the majority still went to the one who dealt the kill.
And kill they did.
Kill! Kill! Kill!
If they could kill enough, their problems would be readily solved.
The two of them managed to defeat a Thunder Skin Toad, Flame Crown Snail, Frost Lord Griffin, and a Thousand Scales Dragon over the course of the next two days.
They were eventually forced to stop because Ink Dragon Gu had almost been damaged by the Thousand Scales Dragon in its fight, but they had managed to collect enough.
Fang Yuan had collected nine Rank 4 gu worms, as well as several Rank 4 Gu refinement materials. He had about twice as much Rank 3 gu worms and materials.
Bai Ning Bing also had a relatively decent collection. But both of them found the constant fighting wearing down upon their spirits. Out here in the wilderness, there were nearly constant battles and foes to fight.
It could not even be said that they were making things safer for others.
Even after those they had killed up until now, it was merely a drop in the ocean. Nature would soon recover, and those beast kings would once again emerge with time.
That was why the Goody-Two Shoes System likely said nothing about these actions. Fang Yuan was doing little to improve or harm lives through his actions.
A storm passed by that evening, causing them both to hole up in a cave and wait for it to pass two days later. It wasn't just wild beasts that people had to contend with in this world; forces of nature could be equally terrifying. It wasn't as if they couldn't push through, but it would risk damaging the White Form Immortal Snake.
Finally on the afternoon of the second day the skies cleared. They had taken a slight detour in order to find as many high-ranking beasts as they could, but it was time to wrap things up.
The two of them turned to their actual destination, Bei Gu Mountain.
