The soft glow of the lanterns inside The Arcane Order's hall bathed the room in flickering amber light as Lucious, Aldric, and Elara stepped inside. A few other Arcani bustled about, turning in reports or receiving new missions, but the hall felt quieter than usual.
Elisa greeted them with her usual kind smile from behind her polished oak desk. "You're right on time. I've just received a mission for the three of you."
Aldric leaned against the desk, grinning. "Another cargo escort? Or maybe we'll get lucky, and it's something that won't bore me to death."
Elisa chuckled softly. "Actually, this one's a little more interesting." She slid a parchment across the desk. "You're to retrieve an ancient scroll from the Ebonfang Dungeon. It's said to be hidden deep within the labyrinth, guarded by traps and… other things."
Lucious picked up the parchment and glanced at the details, while Elara frowned thoughtfully. "Why do we need the scroll?" she asked.
"It contains powerful ancient magic," Elisa explained. "The Order wants to study it and make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands."
Aldric's grin widened. "Now that sounds more like it." He glanced at Lucious. "Think you're ready for a real mission, or do you need to catch your breath first?"
Lucious shot him a look but didn't respond.
Elisa smiled at their banter. "Just be careful. Ebonfang Dungeon has a reputation for being… unpredictable. You'll need to stay sharp."
Elara nodded. "We'll handle it."
As they turned to leave, Elisa called after them. "Good luck out there."
The three Arcani walked along the dirt road, surrounded by dense trees on either side. The early morning sun cast long shadows, and the air was crisp, carrying the scent of dew-soaked leaves. Despite the peaceful surroundings, tension lingered between them, unspoken but palpable.
Aldric adjusted the strap on his pack and glanced at Lucious, who was walking a few paces ahead. With a smirk, he called out, breaking the silence."You better not have been playing around this past week, Lucious. Wouldn't want you slowing us down in there."
Lucious didn't turn his head, but his eyes narrowed slightly. His voice was calm when he replied, though there was an edge to it."Don't worry about me."
Aldric raised an eyebrow, surprised by the confident tone. "Huh, sounds like someone's got something to prove."
Elara sighed, cutting in before Aldric could push it further. "Enough, Aldric. We're a team, remember? Let's focus on the mission."
Aldric shrugged, still grinning. "Just making sure he's ready. That's all."
Lucious said nothing, but his grip tightened briefly on the hilt of his sword. He was ready. More than Aldric realized.
As they stood in front of the dungeon entrance, an imposing stone archway carved into the side of a rocky hill. Vines crawled along the ancient stone, and the air that drifted from within was cold and heavy, carrying the faint scent of damp earth.
Aldric stretched his arms and rolled his shoulders, cracking his neck with a sharp twist. His golden eyes gleamed with confidence as he examined the dark passage ahead. "Well, this doesn't look so bad," he said, grinning. "Probably just a few traps, maybe a monster or two. Easy stuff."
Lucious glanced at him but stayed silent, his face unreadable.
Elara looked more cautious. "We should be careful. Dungeons like this are often more dangerous than they seem."
Aldric waved off her concern with a casual flick of his hand. "Relax, Elara. We've got this. Besides, if anything shows up, I'll take it down before it even gets close."
Without waiting for a response, he stepped forward, entering the dungeon first with a confident stride. His voice echoed back to them as he disappeared into the shadows."Try to keep up!"
Elara sighed and gave Lucious a look that said, He never changes, does he?
Lucious smirked faintly and followed Aldric inside, with Elara close behind.
Deep inside the dungeon, the air grew colder and heavier, as though the ancient walls were pressing in on them. The three Arcani moved cautiously through a wide stone corridor, their footsteps echoing faintly in the silence. Faded carvings of long-forgotten symbols lined the walls, and the faint glow of magical crystals embedded in the ceiling provided dim, eerie light.
A low rumble shook the ground beneath them. Dust trickled from the ceiling, and the sound of grinding stone filled the air.
"What was that?" Elara asked, her voice tense.
Before anyone could answer, a section of the wall ahead cracked and crumbled, revealing a massive stone golem. Its body was made of jagged rock, with glowing blue runes carved into its chest. It let out a deep, guttural roar, its stone fists slamming into the ground as it lumbered toward them.
Aldric grinned, lightning crackling faintly around his hands. "Well, looks like we've got a warm-up. Since I fought Varek last time and you were upset, Lucious, I'll let you take this one." He leaned against the wall with a smug expression. "But don't come crying and asking for my help when it smashes you into the ground."
Lucious drew his blade with a sharp, metallic hiss. He didn't say anything, but his calm, focused expression spoke volumes.
Without hesitation, he stepped forward, placing himself between the golem and his teammates.
The golem roared again and charged, its heavy footfalls shaking the floor. It swung one massive fist at Lucious with enough force to shatter stone.
Lucious sidestepped smoothly, his movements precise and controlled. He ducked under the golem's arm and slashed upward with his sword, sparks flying as the blade cut into the creature's rocky exterior.
The golem staggered back but quickly recovered, swinging its other arm in a wide arc. Lucious ducked again, his sword flashing as he delivered another swift strike to the golem's leg.
Elara watched with wide eyes. "He's… holding his own."
Aldric raised an eyebrow, surprised despite himself. "Hmph. Not bad."
The golem roared in frustration and slammed both fists down, aiming to crush Lucious. But Lucious was faster. He dashed to the side and leapt onto the golem's arm, running up its limb with flawless balance. Reaching its shoulder, he drove his blade deep into the glowing rune on its chest.
The golem let out a final, echoing roar before crumbling into a pile of rubble.
Lucious landed gracefully on the ground, sheathing his sword with a quiet click. He turned to face Aldric and Elara, his expression still calm.
Aldric gave him an appraising look. "Huh. I guess you weren't playing around this past week after all."
Lucious didn't respond, but a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he walked past Aldric.
Elara smiled. "That was impressive, Lucious."
"Let's keep moving," he said quietly, already heading deeper into the dungeon.
After navigating the winding corridors and evading a series of magical traps, Lucious, Aldric, and Elara finally reached the heart of the dungeon—a massive chamber with towering pillars carved from black stone. The air inside was thick with ancient energy, and the faint hum of magic vibrated through the floor beneath their feet.
At the center of the room stood an ornate pedestal, and resting atop it was a scroll, sealed with a shimmering crimson ribbon. The scroll seemed to pulse with power, as though it were alive. Strange runes glowed faintly along its surface, casting flickering light onto the surrounding walls.
"There it is," Elara said softly, her voice tinged with awe.
Aldric grinned and cracked his knuckles. "That wasn't so hard. I told you this would be easy."
Lucious approached the pedestal cautiously, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. He circled the pedestal, examining it from all angles. When nothing happened, he reached out and carefully lifted the scroll from its resting place.
Still, nothing.
Lucious raised an eyebrow but kept his guard up as he turned back toward the others. "Let's go."
The three of them began walking toward the exit, their steps echoing softly in the vast chamber. For a moment, it seemed like everything was fine.
Until it wasn't.
The ground suddenly trembled beneath their feet, and a deep, guttural rumble echoed through the room. Cracks spread across the floor, and from the center of the chamber, something began to rise.
Lucious spun around, his eyes widening as he saw what was emerging from the depths—a massive, scaled creature with wings that stretched wide enough to darken the entire room. Its scales were as black as midnight, and its glowing red eyes burned with rage. Sharp, jagged teeth gleamed as it let out a deafening roar.
A dragon.
Aldric's confident grin vanished. "Okay. Maybe not so easy."
Lucious, Aldric, and Elara barely had time to react as the dragon lunged toward them, its massive wings beating the air with deafening force. Elara raised her hands again, summoning her shimmering barrier just in time to block another torrent of flame.
The dragon's fire crashed against the shield like a tidal wave, sending cracks rippling across its surface.
"I—I can't hold it!" Elara gasped, her face pale with the effort. The barrier flickered and wavered under the dragon's relentless onslaught.
Lucious' mind raced. They needed to move—now.
"Elara, drop the shield!" he shouted.
"What?!"
"Trust me! Drop it!"
With a nod, Elara let the barrier dissolve, and in the split second before the flames reached them, Lucious grabbed Aldric and Elara and teleported them to the far side of the chamber in a flash of blue light. They reappeared behind one of the massive pillars just as the dragon's flames scorched the spot where they had been standing moments before.
"Nice save," Aldric muttered, clenching his daggers. He stepped forward, his eyes locked on the dragon. "My turn."
Before Lucious could stop him, Aldric charged straight at the beast. Lightning crackled around his daggers as he infused them with his power, moving with blinding speed. He leaped into the air and slashed at the dragon's side, aiming for a gap in its scales.
The blades connected—but instead of cutting deep, they barely scratched the surface. The dragon let out an enraged roar and swung its massive tail, hitting Aldric with bone-crushing force. Aldric flew across the chamber and slammed into the wall with a sickening thud.
"Aldric!" Elara screamed, rushing to his side.
Aldric groaned, clutching his arm, which hung limply at his side. "I think… it's broken," he muttered through gritted teeth.
Elara knelt beside him and placed her hands on his arm, her light magic flaring to life as she tried to heal him. But before she could finish, the dragon turned its attention back to them, its eyes burning with rage. It opened its massive jaws, preparing to unleash another torrent of fire—this time aimed directly at Aldric and Elara.
Lucious' heart pounded in his chest. He didn't have time to think. He sprinted forward, placing himself between his friends and the dragon. His hand tightened around the hilt of his sword as he stared down the beast, ready to face the dragon's flames head-on. The beast inhaled deeply, preparing to unleash a devastating torrent of fire.
But before it could attack, footsteps echoed through the chamber. Two groups emerged from the shadows at the entrance, their arrival stopping the dragon in its tracks.
Lucious frowned and turned slightly, just enough to glance at the new arrivals.
"Who are they?" he muttered.
Elara's expression darkened, and her voice dropped to a whisper. "The Shadow Veil… and the Crimson Claws."
Lucious raised an eyebrow. "The Shadow Veil?"
Elara nodded, her eyes wary as she glanced toward the first group. Cloaked in tattered dark robes, the Shadow Veil moved like silent phantoms. Their presence exuded an aura of malice, and their eyes glowed faintly with eerie light.
"They're dangerous," Elara whispered. "They use dark magic—and forbidden spells. They go into dungeons like this to hunt for ancient, cursed relics."
"And the other group?" Lucious asked, eyeing the second team.
The Crimson Claws were the exact opposite of the Shadow Veil in appearance and demeanor. Their crimson armor gleamed in the dim light, and they carried heavy weapons—greatswords, battleaxes, and spears. Unlike the Shadow Veil, who moved with quiet precision, the Crimson Claws stomped confidently into the chamber, their presence as loud and aggressive as their reputation.
"They're mercenaries," Elara said. "They raid dungeons to find treasure and sell it on the black market. Brutes who love fighting and care about nothing else."
Before Lucious could respond, the Shadow Veil and Crimson Claws sprang into action, moving with practiced efficiency. They didn't even glance at Lucious and his team as they attacked the dragon.
One of the Crimson Claws leaped onto the beast's back, driving a massive spear into its neck. The dragon roared in pain, thrashing wildly, but it was quickly subdued by the Shadow Veil, who cast dark, twisting spells that wrapped around its wings and limbs, pinning it down.
Within moments, the dragon collapsed to the ground, its body smoking and motionless.
One of the Crimson Claws warriors smirked as he wiped the blood from his blade. "We didn't even need to use magic to handle that."
He glanced at the Shadow Veil with a smug grin, clearly trying to provoke them. The tension between the two groups was palpable, like a powder keg waiting to explode.
The leader of the Shadow Veil stepped forward, his face partially hidden beneath his hood, though the sinister gleam of his eyes was unmistakable. His voice was smooth but laced with malice as he addressed Lucious and the team.
"Hand over the scroll," he said coldly, "or we'll take it after we're done breaking each of your limbs."
Behind him, the Crimson Claws warriors grinned, clearly eager to inflict pain. One of them casually cracked his knuckles, his heavy crimson gauntlets clinking as he stepped closer.
Lucious stood his ground, gripping the scroll tightly. His heart raced, but he refused to show fear.
"No," he said simply.
The Shadow Veil leader's eyes narrowed. He raised a hand, dark energy crackling at his fingertips.
"Wrong answer," he said, and before Lucious could react, one of the Crimson Claws warriors lunged forward and struck Elara hard across the face, sending her crumpling to the ground.
"Elara!" Aldric shouted, rushing to her side. He glared up at their attackers, fury blazing in his eyes, but he knew they were hopelessly outmatched.
Lucious clenched his fists, his mind racing. They couldn't win this fight—not against both the Shadow Veil and the Crimson Claws. He glanced at Elara, who was struggling to get up, her face pale with pain, and then at Aldric, whose daggers trembled in his hands as he stood protectively over her.
There was only one option left.
The Shadow Veil leader raised his hand again, signaling his team to move in.
"Time's up," he sneered.
In that moment, Lucious felt the familiar pull of his magic. Desperation sharpened his focus, and before he could think twice, he activated his time magic.
Everything froze.
The Shadow Veil, the Crimson Claws, even the flames flickering along the walls—all of them were suspended in place, motionless as statues. Only Lucious remained moving, his breathing ragged as he forced himself to stay upright. Time magic drained his energy quickly, and he knew he didn't have long.
He turned toward Aldric and Elara, frozen mid-motion. Their expressions were a mix of rage, fear, and defiance.
Focusing his magic, Lucious released the time effect around them. Instantly, they blinked and gasped as they returned to normal, disoriented by the sudden shift.
"What—what's happening?" Aldric asked, glancing around at the motionless figures.
"There's no time to explain," Lucious said urgently. "Take Elara and get out. I'll hold them off."
Aldric's eyes widened. "What? No way—I'm not leaving you here!"
"You have to!" Lucious insisted. "You've seen what they can do. If we stay, we're all dead. But if you get Elara to safety, there's still a chance."
Aldric hesitated, torn between his loyalty and his instinct to fight. But when he looked at Elara—still weakened, leaning on him for support—he knew Lucious was right.
"Trust me," Lucious added softly, meeting Aldric's gaze. "I've got this."
Aldric's jaw tightened, but he nodded reluctantly. He turned to Elara and helped her to her feet.
"We'll come back for you," he said quietly.
Lucious gave him a small, grim smile. "I'll hold you to that."
Aldric didn't waste another second. He grabbed Elara and activated his magic. In a flash of lightning, they vanished, leaving Lucious alone.
The strain of maintaining the time spell was overwhelming now, and Lucious felt his magic slipping away. As the last remnants flickered and faded, time resumed.
The Shadow Veil leader scowled as he realized what had happened. He turned to Lucious, fury etched across his face.
"Where are they?" he demanded.
Lucious stepped forward, positioning himself between the attackers and the empty space where his friends had been.
"You'll have to go through me," he said, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at him.
The Shadow Veil leader's lips curled into a cruel smile. "Gladly."
The duel began.
Lucious gave it everything he had, but it quickly became clear that he was hopelessly outmatched. He tried to use his time magic again, but the Shadow Veil leader was prepared. With a wave of his hand, he disrupted the flow of time around Lucious, rendering his magic useless.
Lucious switched to his sword, relying on his speed and skill to hold his ground. He dodged, parried, and struck with precision, but each blow barely seemed to faze his opponent. The Shadow Veil leader countered with devastating dark magic, sending waves of shadow energy that slammed into Lucious, throwing him back and weakening him further.
Bruised and bleeding, Lucious struggled to stay on his feet. His vision blurred, and his breaths came in ragged gasps. He knew he couldn't last much longer.
Just as the Shadow Veil leader raised his hand for a final, crushing blow, a powerful blast of arcane energy tore through the chamber, forcing him to stagger back.
"What—?" he snarled, turning toward the entrance.
Standing there, their robes glowing with the sigils of the Arcane Order, were several high-ranking Arcanites. Their presence radiated authority and power, and their expressions were cold and unforgiving.
"Step away from him," one of them commanded, her voice ringing through the chamber like a bell.
The Shadow Veil and Crimson Claws exchanged wary glances. They were strong, but even they knew better than to take on the Arcane Order's elite.
With a final glare at Lucious, the Shadow Veil leader sneered. "This isn't over."
He and his team vanished into the shadows, followed closely by the Crimson Claws, who retreated with reluctant scowls.
As the dust settled, Lucious finally allowed himself to collapse, the exhaustion and pain overwhelming him.
The last thing he saw before everything went dark was Aldric and Elara rushing toward him, their faces filled with relief and concern.
One of the Arcanites, a tall figure with dark hair tied back and eyes as sharp as daggers, stepped forward as the Shadow Veil and Crimson Claws disappeared into the distance. His crimson cloak billowed slightly behind him, and the air around him seemed to crackle with raw energy. He surveyed Lucious with a calm, assessing gaze before giving a nod of acknowledgment.
"You did well holding them off. Buying time like that took guts," he said, his deep voice steady and authoritative.
Lucious, still catching his breath and struggling to steady himself, straightened up as best as he could. Despite the exhaustion weighing on him, he managed to give a respectful response.
"Thanks, sir," Lucious said sincerely.
The man raised an eyebrow, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Name's Darius Nightbane," he said. "S-Rank Arcanite."
Lucious blinked, stunned for a moment. An S-Rank? He'd never met one in person before. The sheer presence and power radiating from Darius suddenly made sense.
Darius glanced at Lucious with a smirk after introducing himself, then clapped him lightly on the shoulder.
"Anyway, your mission is a success. You kept the scroll safe, and that's what matters," Darius said with a nod of approval. "Let's head back to the outpost and celebrate."
Lucious exchanged a glance with Aldric and Elara, who were both equally stunned by how things had turned out. Slowly, a small smile crept onto Aldric's face.
"Guess we didn't do too bad after all," Aldric muttered, still nursing his sore arm but clearly relieved.
Elara gave Lucious a grateful look, her golden eyes full of warmth. "You saved us back there," she said softly.
Lucious shrugged, trying to brush it off, though his exhaustion was evident. "Just doing what needed to be done."
With that, the group followed Darius and the other higher-ups as they made their way back to the Arcane Outpost. The battle was over, the mission complete—and it was time to celebrate
As the celebration continued around them, Lucious sat quietly, staring at the drink in front of him. Aldric was beside him, unusually quiet, his injured arm now fully healed thanks to Elara.
They had fought hard, but the battle against the Shadow Veil and the Crimson Claws had left both of them shaken. The strength of those enemies had exposed their limits.
Elara approached, her usual serene expression softened by gratitude. She gave them both a warm smile.
"Hey," she said gently, sitting down across from them. "I just wanted to thank you. You both saved my life back there."
Lucious shrugged. "We're a team. That's what we do."
Elara nodded but leaned in slightly, her voice growing more resolute."Today, we saw our limits," she said firmly, looking at both of them. "And that's exactly why we have to work harder—to break them."
There was a brief silence, and then Aldric smirked, leaning back in his chair with that familiar spark of confidence returning to his eyes. He glanced at Lucious and said, "If you wanted all the glory, you should've just said so from the start."
Lucious blinked, then let out a surprised laugh. Elara giggled too, and the tension that had hung over them finally broke.
For the first time that night, it felt like they could breathe again.
