CASEY
I tried to settle into the seat, to find comfort in the plush leather, but it felt impossible. My back was straight, my legs crossed and then uncrossed, fingers tapping my thigh. Everything in my body screamed tension.
Still, to Leonard's credit, he went straight to the point.
"I would appreciate it if whatever we discuss in here," he began, his voice low and deliberate, "didn't reach your mother."
I narrowed my eyes slightly. This is not good, my mind warned me.
He didn't give me time to react. "The family lawyer will be joining us soon," he said, "but I told him to give us space. There are things that we need to iron out first. As a family. Before we bring in another party....even if it's a legal one."
Family? I thought, stunned. We have a family lawyer? Am I included in that definition now? That tiny realisation caught me off guard more than I wanted to admit. But I pushed it down. Whatever this was, it wasn't about feelings.
