Chapter 9: Adrian's Frustration Grows
Adrian sat in his office, staring at a blank screen on his laptop.
For months, he hadn't thought much about Evelyn Ravenshire. He had assumed she would eventually return to her usual ways—showing up at events, finding reasons to talk to him.
But she hadn't.
And now, after months, when he finally saw her again—she had looked at him like a stranger.
She hadn't smiled, hadn't clung to him, hadn't even hesitated before walking away.
And it bothered him.
More than it should have.
"Sir?" His assistant knocked, snapping him out of his thoughts.
"What?" Adrian asked, sharper than intended.
The assistant hesitated. "The Ravenshire family is hosting an event next week. Shall I confirm your attendance?"
Adrian tapped his pen against the desk. "Is Evelyn going to be there?"
The assistant frowned. "I'm… not sure, sir. She hasn't been attending many events recently."
Adrian's fingers tightened around the pen.
"…Find out where she's been."
His assistant blinked. "Sir?"
Adrian's expression remained cold, unreadable. "I want to know what she's been doing."
If she thought she could just disappear from his life, she was wrong.
