Chapter 276 - Chapter 276

Adam decided to let Eric spend the rest of the night on his own, relaxing, while he did the same. However he did tell his crew about a mission he wanted to run tomorrow since it would be his last run out in all likelihood before he solely focused on the Pestilence problem.

So, with his plans laid out, he threw on a movie and invited Deccanus to watch with him. It was enjoyable, he just wished he had popcorn.

The next day came and Adam grabbed Deccanus, Pearl, Sgt. Fyre, and Buddy to come with him to go on a run, Mira was invited too but she said she had some work to do so Adam let her be. Normally he wouldn't be bringing a whole entourage like this but where he was going he knew there would be some trouble, and handling it now seemed like it might be better for everyone.

As he left the vault though, he noticed that the stairway leading down the cave entrance was actually completed. Thinking back it was actually done when he got here after he had infiltrated the cult, however he was just thinking about getting back inside the Vault so he didn't even think to look down. However there it was, a very smooth and slightly stylish stairway made of mostly poured concrete. No longer would people have to struggle to descend down slightly wet and slippery rocks, instead a stairway would make life so much easier. The moisture would still be a problem but that was a problem for the future. Now that the stairway was done the construction robot could finally get started on the wall.

When he got above ground he actually saw the robot already starting on the wall, helped by some of the Vault residents with too much time on their hands. Adam was content to leave the finer details to the people actually working on it. But when completed it will be nice to exit the cave entrance to the Vault above ground and be protected from whatever creature or hostiles might be wandering by. His only request was that the wall was spacious enough to allow a number of people to crowd inside, had at least two palisade ramparts, one for each laser turret and preferably a third for someone to walk up on and look over the wall, and a thickness strong enough to block rifle rounds. They had the materials. It was just the effort to make it all work now that would take time.

The citizens too were following the construction protectron's example and using the holes in the brick to stick the scavenged rebar down into which will make the wall that much sturdier when it's all completed. He did not have a plan for a gate in mind, figuring he would come up with something later, but the people helping out said they had a plan, offering a gate none too dissimilar to the one that they had in Naper.

Satisfied with the work being done Adam turned to leave with his group but paused when he looked at the construction protection again. He was getting sick of calling it 'construction protectron' since he was liable to keep it from now on he wanted to give it a name. So name it he would.

"Construction protectron, a moment of your time, please." He said it politely.

"Understood, what can I do for you, sir?" It said with its distinct protectron voice that all models shared.

"From now on your designation is…Rivet" Adam said after a moment, moderately impressed with his on the spot name. It was not entirely accurate as the construction protectron had a nailgun not a rivet gun, but nail didn't sound as good. Or… maybe it did? Ah well, too late now.

"Understood, this unit will be known as Rivet. Is there anything else, sir?" It asked only for Adam to shake his head.

"No, that is all, you may resume your work."

"Understood." It said back as it turned around to rejoin the work, saying: "Please wear a hardhat at all times on the construction site and stand clear of the heavy machinery please." to no one in particular. Adam turned his attention back to his group and then headed to the APC to hop in.

Obviously, Sgt. Fyre, Buddy, and Pearl sat in the back, but Deccanus joined Adam up front. It was just dawning on him now how many of his companions couldn't sit in the cockpit with him. It was made for a human after all, many of his fighting force were robots.

The trip was not a long one, unlike all the other trips he had made recently he was not going to the other side of Chicago to do something crazy. Though he was not exactly doing something uncrazy. He would have brought along Hades too but considering this was a looting run on top of everything else he needed the space in the back. Hades took up way too much room. That was why he compromised with himself with Sgt. Fyre. Besides, letting him kick some imaginary commie ass was what he wanted to do. He was happy to oblige.

Adam took the time on the trip to explain how to drive the APC to Deccanus, figuring now was as good a time as any to at least get him familiar. Ideally it would be nice to have at least one more person familiar with the APC in case he was injured or otherwise unavailable. Salvatore would be his first choice but he has been strangely resistant to learning and he was not here. Neither was Mira. Nor Eve. So Deccanus it was. At least he was a good listener, even if he had to explain everything from scratch for this former legionnaire.

Eventually, after a bit of driving, they arrived at Adam's destination. The strip mall near Naper. This had been on his to do list for a long time. Ever since he first came here way back and over encumbered himself with guns leaving a stockpile back in the sealed off side, he had wanted to return to collect the rest. Now was the perfect time. Of course there were many other reasons for coming here. Dealing with the ant hive that was a little too close to Naper for comfort was one, the other was a gift for one of his friends.

As Adam walked over to the side of the strip mall there, just where he left it, was the motorcycle, untouched since he left it behind. It was time to bring this baby home.
