There was a plan in place in case the ferals began moving around and tried to hit the camp from the West. They had set up defenses even on the west side for this very reason. However the sight lines from the Vertibird were enormous, they could see for miles, there was no way a horde of ghouls could flank them without being spotted. So, since there was no need to worry about the only direction that the ferals could not yet attack, the Western defenses were not manned in favor of getting more firepower on the Eastern front.
So as the ferals poured in from the West, seemingly spawning out of thin air, with no one sure how they got there, the camp was immediately thrown into disarray.
As the Northern wall was overrun with feral ghouls the lines quickly began to disintegrate. Many of those who had been keeping the line held tight on the eastern edge turned and began to fire at the ferals now hitting the camp from behind. However the immense pressure of the feral ghoul wave on the East through the parking lot did not abate for even a moment. So as the army split its attention and tried to tamp down the attacks on the north the ferals breached the Eastern wall.
Of course the first handful of ghouls fell into the trench, as predicted. The next few could not scale the wall of sandbags above the trench. However with so many rushing forward it did not take long for the ghouls to climb over one another and begin to overtake the position. Within moments the eastern wall was no longer an orderly target practice on a range and instead it was like a siege at battlements. Men were now fighting hand to hand with the ferals as they slowly began to swarm through the East.
Worse yet, the Southern front was also starting to get hit from behind and the ferals were beginning to charge through the center of the camp, heading towards the Eastern wall from behind.
"KNIGHTS! PHALANX!" Sir Galahad called out loudly to all the knights of the round as he raised his sword high to the sky and then planted his shield out in front of him. Within moments all the knights gathered to his call, senior and junior knights alike. Within a moment a shield wall had formed at the back of the Eastern front. Of course 24 knights was not enough to cover the entirety of the eastern wall, but it was enough to stop the rush of the ferals swarming from the west for the moment.
As the ferals crashed into the wall formation of the knights they began to use their positioning to begin methodically cutting down the ferals who were trying to push into the lines of the eastern defenders.
That was when some others began to join the fray.
The first one Adam saw was the samurai looking mercenary with the long sheathed sword. He walked over to the side of the phalanx shield wall, got into a draw stance, his legs spread and his stance wide as he prepared to draw the sword, and then, as the ferals tried to come to him, moving around the shield wall, he pulled out his sword and with one clean slice cut through not only the 3 ferals in front of him, taking their heads from their bodies, but also the air itself. His blade was literally ignited, coated in a flame that seemed to stay in the air for a moment after his swing. Adam was not exactly sure how or why his sword was doing this, but he was able to see a black tube sticking out from the bottom of his sword hilt leading into the sleeve of his shirt. Perhaps he was hiding a gas tank in there? He could only guess.
Next was Deccanus who joined the melee with reckless abandon. Literally vaulting over the heads of one of the knights as he dove straight into a pile of ferals, planting his spear through the body of one as he landed on it. Before another could swing at him he pulled his machete and then cut the arms of the one reaching for him clean off without hesitation.
Eve was quick to follow, her eye laser now charged. She side stepped the wall of knights and blasted a hole through a huge number of the ferals swarming from the west. After her head laser fired and was on cooldown she too dove into the fray, her claws spinning like drills as she tore through limb and flesh alike.
She was not alone either, the other robots had joined the fray, the other assaultron that the Gunners brought seemed to be fighting with an equal, if not as well thought out, ferocity near her position, while the Mr. Gutsys laid down heavy plasma fire into the crowd of ferals.
Pearl was now in the fray too, swinging her mighty super sledge into crowds of ghouls and clearing a number of them with a determined expression on her face. She even seemed to take a hit for a nearby gunner that was next to her fighting, using her massive arm to block a swing from a ghoul trying to attack. Of course she followed this up by smashing the ghoul's head like a pumpkin a moment later.
Then there was War. One would expect War, with all the hype built up around this enigma of a man to be bringing nothing but the most extreme combat style to this fight. They would be right. War, pulling the massive vertibird blade from his back, with one swing, cleaved through 7 ghouls without stopping. This was not like the samurai, who cleanly and precisely aimed for the necks to ensure the easiest kill, no. War did not waste time with such things, he cut straight through the torso of 7 feral ghouls in one massive swing. His sword did not even lose much momentum either, one could only imagine how many more he could kill in one swing if given the opportunity. Adam could only speculate. After his swing had come to a stop he pulled a 6 barreled grenade launcher from his side and began to throw cluster munition rounds into the crowds of ferals swarming now from the west, killing swaths of the enemies in mere seconds.
Adam, for his part, was trying to play support, firing on both the eastern ferals and western ferals in equal measure. He wanted to be able to trust his back to his fellow soldiers, but he simply didn't. A fact that was causing him to be less effective with his shots.
As Adam fired at a feral that was close to hitting Deccanus in the West, Adam could feel a heavy blow knock the helmet off his head despite his strap from behind.
As he let himself fall to the ground, using the momentum to get distance and spin around he saw a feral that had gotten close enough to hit him. However he was not in any great position to shoot it before it could get another hit in.
Before the feral could swing again though, a blue laser round fired through the sky, nailed the feral in the head and did enough damage to cause it to collapse on the ground, dead. Blue laser. Not a red laser, not a green plasma shot. A blue laser. There was only one type of gun that fired a blue laser as far as Adam was aware. A recharger rifle!
Mira was alive! Somewhere, at least. She seemed to have a vantage point on the battle as she had just saved Adam's life. It was speculation but it had to be her. The blue laser is a sure sign of a recharger rifle. No other US Army weapon fired blue. Well, the Gauss Rifle did, but he had never seen one, heard of anyone seeing one, nor even was positive it existed, if it did, it was something kept very secret from a low rank like him. It might as well be a unicorn. It was a recharger rifle shot, it had to be, and since they were rare, uncommonly used, and he did not see a single person with one other than Mira it had to be her. That eased his heart a bit knowing that but he couldn't lose focus, he had to keep fighting.
As he stood up he focused fire on the East again. As it stood, for the moment, The eastern wall was on the verge of collapse but was still holding for the moment, the North had been completely overrun, while there were still people fighting over there it was just a matter time before they all died, the West had stabilized, the swarms of ferals were not nearly as bad as they were from the East and the manpower that all moved to fight the ferals swarming in from the West were some of the best here, so it was maintaining a tenuous status quo. Finally, the South side too was holding, but only just, they had the luxury of having seen the north get hit and repositioned themselves in time to counter the ferals swarming in from the west, but still they were under manned as they were not expecting such a massive wave of enemies to hit them.
The Vertibird flew overhead, strafing the Western swarm in a pass cutting up ghoul bodies left and right but it did not seem to be making any more progress in changing the situation than anyone else.
Where the hell were they coming from? They had scoped out the battlefield, all actions were accounted for, the plan was well thought out and thorough, what went wrong? How could the feral ghouls so expertly flank around from the opposite direction without being spotted by the scouts? Even if they were to take an exceptionally long way around it would not have been done this fast and that too was… suspicious.
Then it hit Adam, the one thing he had overlooked simply because his mind deemed it a non-factor, The sewers. The Ferals had crawled out of the sewers and flanked them from underground.
