Chapter 44

The abominable creature emerged from the water, towering over the city as its limbs flailed in rage. His many eyeballs scanned the buildings, deciding which direction to begin its mass destruction.

The monster didn't stand there looking like a confused, oversized goldfish. No, it immediately set out to destroy the city, trampling people and houses under its feet.

I ducked instinctively as the sea monster threw a huge log, which sailed past my head, missing me by what felt like half an inch.

"Well, that's just great," I muttered, dusting myself off as the beast let out a bone-rattling roar.

Laine peered around the crumbling corner of the rooftop's ledge.

"On the bright side," he said, "At least it's not breathing fire too."

"Don't give it ideas," I hissed back. 

I forced myself to look away from the city to check on Peleg and his family, who were huddled together and shaking with fear. 

Why did I always end up babysitting cowards?
