Xerneas watched Diancie warily, her mind full of questions.
Something about her felt wrong.
She'd seen Diancie before—probably this one's ancestor.
That soft, sweet temperament had been rare among Legendary Pokémon, so Xerneas remembered it clearly.
But this one…
For some reason, the feeling she gave off reminded Xerneas oddly of Yveltal.
Suppressing her unease, Xerneas raised her head slightly, her multicolored antlers glowing even more brilliantly.
She hadn't forgotten her promise to that ghost.
Since this was his Pokémon, she would grant her blessing.
In an instant, dense Life Energy spread through the forest.
Flowers, grass, and trees withered by Yveltal revived instantly, bursting back to life.
A ring of flowerbeds bloomed beneath Xerneas's hooves, sacred and vibrant.
Diancie's problem was congenital—an incurable condition humans could never remedy.
But for Xerneas, all it took was a blessing: pouring immense Life Energy into Diancie, filling every gap with her unique Fairy aura.
As halos rippled out from Xerneas, green-glimmering energy flowed into Diancie's body.
Life reached its absolute peak. Plants around them bloomed and fruited at impossible speeds.
Vmm—
A flash of white light—and the halos faded, marking the blessing's completion.
The spectacle was massive.
Yet from the moment Xerneas had landed before Diancie to the blessing's end, only seconds had passed.
Seeing Diancie still looking dazed, Xerneas tilted her head.
She wondered what kind of pull this Pokémon had, that the human ghost had willingly paid with his life to save her.
And yet…
Even after thousands of years, Xerneas still couldn't understand feelings like that.
Shaking her head, Xerneas stepped back, intending to leave.
She'd honored the promise and finished the blessing. Whatever happened next wasn't her responsibility.
But she'd barely formed that thought—hadn't even moved—when Xerneas froze.
Diancie wasn't wearing the blissful, relieved expression Xerneas had expected.
Instead, her eyes were bloodshot, her small face twisted with indescribable grief.
Xerneas's eyes widened. The sorrow emanating from Diancie felt so hopeless that even Xerneas recoiled.
In a single day, her emotions had been pulled and shaken repeatedly.
For a Legendary Pokémon who'd lived millennia, long accustomed to death and parting, this was unthinkable.
Then, as if she'd realized something, Xerneas's expression shifted.
Diancie's grief might have something to do with her.
This was, after all, the first time she'd used her blessing. A mistake was entirely possible.
Yet that human ghost had trusted her completely.
Xerneas didn't want to betray that trust—didn't want to hurt the Pokémon he'd cherished.
But quickly, Xerneas sensed something else beneath Diancie's grief.
Hatred.
And the target of that hatred… seemed to be her.
The instant Xerneas realized it, her mind went briefly blank.
At the very same moment—
Boom!
The earth cracked open beneath her, collapsing downward abruptly.
A streak of pink flashed upward—a dazzling storm erupted from underground, firing straight at her.
DIAMOND STORM!
Xerneas clearly hadn't anticipated being attacked without warning.
In an instant, hard, brilliant diamonds swallowed her silhouette.
For a heartbeat—
Xerneas felt as if countless Fighting-types had pummeled her, searing pain exploding throughout her body.
Thud!
Xerneas stomped hard, and a translucent barrier wrapped around her.
Crack—crack—
A chorus of shattering sounds rang out almost simultaneously.
Before Reflect shattered completely, points of light shimmered along Xerneas's antlers, and the deer vanished from the diamond storm.
In her place stood only a glassy-eyed puppet.
SUBSITUTE!
Having escaped narrowly, Xerneas quickly widened the distance between herself and Diancie.
When she looked back, her Substitute had already been pulverized by Diamond Storm.
But before Xerneas could even marvel at Diamond Storm's power—
Diancie pressed her tiny hands together, fingertips meeting, her face expressionless as she aimed at Xerneas the moment she landed.
BOOOOM!
An orange-yellow Hyper Beam fired directly at her, shrieking through the air with terrifying speed.
Xerneas narrowed her eyes, lowered her multicolored antlers, and charged straight into the beam.
Thud—
A violent explosion erupted at the collision.
Xerneas's Megahorn was equally powerful—she smashed the incoming beam apart, fragment by fragment.
This time, Diancie didn't immediately follow up.
Xerneas retreated two careful steps, her head still buzzing.
She couldn't comprehend what was happening.
Diancie had accepted her blessing—so why was she behaving like this?
Those two attacks hadn't held back at all.
With Diancie in such an emotional state, their power was probably even stronger than usual.
What was she thinki—
Suddenly, Xerneas froze.
She turned stiffly, trying to glimpse the distant hill from her current position.
The hill where she'd made the deal with that human ghost.
From here, there were no obstructions—sharp eyes could clearly see what had happened up there.
And if Diancie had been there earlier, then what she'd seen…
Was Xerneas biting down and shattering that ghost.
In an instant, cold dread surged up Xerneas's spine.
Opposite her—
Diancie ground her teeth until they creaked.
Xerneas had just given her a lump of green-glimmering energy.
Brimming with life, it had drilled into Diancie's body the instant it touched her, swiftly repairing the damage inside.
But…
Diancie felt no joy.
She recognized that energy—it was exactly the same as what Xerneas had just taken from Elias.
Kill her Trainer, then casually hand her something stolen from him.
It didn't fill Diancie with gratitude—only humiliation and rage.
She wanted… revenge!
