Multiple red eyes glowed, blinking into existence. On the walls and on the ground. Dropping from the canyon's upper ledges.
Beasts.
Four-limbed, armored hides gleaming like blackened steel. Lean and ravenous. Their jaws split wide, revealing rows of needle-like fangs. Claws gouged the stone like it was clay.

Kael's smirk flickered. "Great. A pack."
Kael's muscles coiled. His breathing slowed. The pain faded into background noise.
The first Direhound lunged.
He twisted left, boots scraping stone. The beast's jaws snapped shut where his head had been.
Air whistled past his ear. Kael pivoted, using the momentum to slide the dagger across its flank. The strike was not deep enough to kill, just enough to redirect it.
The creature yelped and stumbled past him, crashing into the gravel.
Two more came from opposite sides.
