Sometimes, everything around you becomes a painful reminder that the people you care about don't truly care about you.
No matter how many times they say they do, no matter how sweet their words sound in the moment, their actions or the lack of them always reveal the truth.
Maybe they say it out of habit, or maybe to soothe their own conscience, to convince themselves they're not as indifferent as they truly are.
Or maybe they just say it to keep you from realizing the most painful truth of all, that you were always the only one who cared.
And so, you hold onto their words, clutching them like a lifeline, pretending they mean something, pretending you're not a fool for loving people who wouldn't break their stride if you shattered right in front of them.
