Medical Center. Green Clinic.
"So, how's it look?"
Jill stared at Adam, eyes sparkling with hope.
"Not bad at all," Adam said, nodding with a grin.
"Any hot tips?"
Jill was practically bouncing with excitement.
"We'll get to that later," Adam said, glancing at his watch and standing up. "Leonard's about to wake up—let's go check on him first."
"Right, Dad!"
Rachel and Jill snapped out of it.
They'd almost spaced on that little detail!
Not that they were heartless monsters or anything—it's just that, deep down, with Adam around, they didn't feel the need to stress about their dad.
Even if they showed up with boyfriends or husbands in tow, they'd be useless anyway.
With Adam on it, they could chill.
"Jill, stash that tape," Adam said, handing her the video. "Leonard just had surgery—don't hit him with this stuff yet. Talk to me instead, and I'll ease him into it."
"Got it!"
Jill nodded with a smile, no objections.
To her, Adam was way cooler than her dad—no generation gap, easy to chat with.
VIP Ward.
"Rachel, maybe I'll wait outside," Ross said, hesitating as they got close. "My throat's kinda scratchy—I don't wanna get him sick."
"Oh, come on, can you stop being so scared of him?" Rachel said, rolling her eyes.
"Open your mouth—let me see," Adam said, chuckling. "Forgot I'm your doc too?"
"I'm not scared of him!" Ross insisted, avoiding Adam's gaze and focusing on Rachel. "I'm just not feeling great."
"Is he awake?" Adam asked the nurse on duty.
"Not yet," she said with a smile.
"Oh, I feel way better now," Ross said, flipping his tune instantly. "Let's go see him!"
As the son-in-law, he had to pop in on his sick father-in-law.
Didn't mean he had to stick around while the guy was awake, though—showing up was enough!
"Don't rag on Ross," Adam said to Rachel with a grin. "Him being scared of Leonard? That's a win for everyone."
Rachel blinked, then glanced at her feistier little sis Jill, smirked, and nodded. Fair point—having a guy a little spooked wasn't a bad thing!
Who knows what he might do otherwise? 😏
"Oh my God!"
The second Rachel pushed the door open and saw her dad on the bed, she let out a worried gasp.
Jill echoed her.
But then it took a weird turn.
Rachel leaned over the bed, inspecting him left and right, muttering, "Guess that ear-and-nose-hair trimmer I got him was a waste of cash."
"Obviously!"
Jill bent down, peering into Dad's nostrils, then ran a hand through Leonard's hair. "And that conditioner I bought him, plus the VIP salon card I set up? Total bust."
"No wonder Mom's never wanted to get back with him," Rachel said, staring at his face with a hint of disgust. "Dad's such a mess."
"…"
Adam's mouth twitched as he shot a sympathetic look at poor Leonard, lying there defenseless.
Heartless much? Total heartless vibes! 😬
Ahem!
Seeing the two of them spiral further off-topic, Adam coughed to snap them out of it. He didn't want Leonard waking up to this duo's savage roasting and needing another round of CPR!
"Rachel, Jill, back off a bit. Let Leonard wake up naturally."
"Oh, right!"
They nodded, finally dropping the mean-girl commentary.
"Adam, once Dad's awake, can he make it to Emma's birthday party?" Rachel asked, smacking her forehead as it hit her.
"…No way," Adam said, grimacing. "Leonard didn't just have some minor procedure—this was heart surgery."
"Ooh…"
Rachel crouched down to peek at Emma in her stroller, sighing. "Guess Grandpa can't come to our little Emma's first birthday party. We won't hold it against him, okay?"
"…I can't go either," Adam added.
"What?! Why?!"
Rachel's voice shot up a notch.
Adam, Emma's godfather, was supposed to be the star of this first-birthday bash.
She'd planned to show him off to everyone!
"Because I've gotta stay with Leonard…" Adam said, exasperated.
"Oh, right…"
Rachel frowned, torn. "Can't someone else watch him? You're Emma's godfather—you have to be there. I bet Dad would want that too."
"Video call it is—same as being there," Adam said, shaking his head. "Other docs could handle Leonard, sure, but I won't feel right unless I'm here myself."
Rachel opened her mouth to argue, but Adam cut her off. "Final call. I think Emma'd back me up on this when she's older—sticking by her beloved grandpa, you know?"
"And my beloved dad… Fine," Rachel mumbled, realizing she'd been a little too focused on the party. "Video call it is—Dad's health comes first… Ross, what are you doing?!"
"Just watching some TV," Ross said, shrugging innocently.
He'd flipped on the wall-mounted TV facing the bed. Dinosaurs were thrashing cowboys—one epic tail-swipe sent a sneaky gang of cowboys flying, and Ross cracked up.
"You're not scared of my dad now?" Rachel glared.
"I've never been scared of him, okay?!"
Ross, sprawled on the sofa chair, coughed, laughed, and—to prove his point—propped his legs right up on Leonard's bed.
"Dad!"
Rachel and Jill shouted.
"Don't mess with me!" Ross wagged a finger, grinning like he'd won.
"Get your legs off!"
Adam stepped up, shoving Ross's feet aside. "You're squashing Leonard's catheter."
"Dr. Green!"
Ross froze, finally noticing something off. He glanced over—and locked eyes with Leonard, awake and staring at him coldly.
He yelped, stumbled back, and—just like those cowboys flattened by his fave dinosaur—crashed to the floor in a heap.
Adam could've caught him.
But nah.
Leonard, fresh off heart surgery, needed a good mood boost.
Ross playing the clown to cheer up his father-in-law? Totally fair game! 😆
"How you feeling?" Adam asked with a smile.
"For someone who just had heart surgery, pretty good," Leonard said, grinning back at Adam. "Thanks to you being right there. If it'd been a little later—or some other doc—I don't even wanna think about it."
"That's all Rachel's doing," Adam said with a laugh.
"Yup," Leonard said, glancing at Rachel—who couldn't help but look smug—and nodding. "Gotta give her credit."
If Rachel hadn't been pals with Adam way back, nudging him to lean on Leonard as his medical career launchpad, none of this would've happened.
Now, the help Adam was giving back? It blew past anything Leonard had done for him.
But Adam wasn't about tit-for-tat—he was the "drop of kindness, repay with a flood" type.
Leonard's three daughters? Not one was reliable. The only married one's husband—Ross—drove him nuts and was useless to boot.
Thank God for Adam!
If Adam hadn't flat-out hinted he wasn't into any of the girls, Leonard would've begged him to be his son-in-law.
Sure, it wasn't perfect, but overall? He was damn lucky.
With Adam's talent, he could've teamed up with anyone and still hit this level of success.
If that'd happened, Leonard wouldn't be here now.
So yeah—Rachel really deserved the props!
