"Prin!"
With a proud cry, Prinplup appeared on the battlefield.
"Prinplup? Did you catch it recently?"
A hint of curiosity flashed through Jasmine's eyes.
Silas nodded. "Yeah. I encountered it in the underground caves beneath Mt. Mortar. It's a pretty good little guy."
"Prin!"
Hearing this, Prinplup raised its head and puffed out its chest proudly.
Jasmine covered her mouth and laughed. "What a cute little one. My Xi'er was just like that back then.
"However, before Xi'er evolved, its win rate against Li'er wasn't very high.
"Oh, right. Li'er is my Pokémon. It's a Ferrothorn~"
"Hmm, my Prinplup is a little different. I don't think defeating a Ferroseed will be a problem."
Silas calmly fired back.
Come to think of it, every outstanding Trainer became a bit of a "trash talker" during battles.
After all, a Pokémon battle was a matter involving both the Pokémon on the field and the Trainer.
If either side made a mistake, the outcome could be completely different.
If the opponent's words caused you to lose your composure, then you could only blame yourself for not having a strong enough mentality.
Quite a few Trainers had gotten into private arguments with one another for precisely this reason.
However, most Trainers were still quite good at separating their daily lives from their battles.
It was entirely possible for a refined and polite person to turn into someone who could insult an opponent without using a single swear word once they stepped onto the battlefield. That was a very common occurrence.
Silas rarely used this method himself.
Most of the time, he simply responded when provoked, occasionally throwing in a taunt toward his opponent.
The main reason was that he felt the difference was simply too great. It almost felt like having split personalities.
"Prinplup, use Water Pulse."
Seeing that Jasmine was about to say something else, Silas immediately seized the opportunity to launch an attack.
"What an impatient guy. And quite sneaky, too." Jasmine smiled. "Ferroseed, use Ingrain!"
Upon hearing its Trainer's command, Prinplup immediately opened its mouth and began gathering Water-type energy.
A water orb that looked calm on the outside but churned violently within slowly grew larger in front of it.
Prinplup gave its body a slight twist, and the water orb shot forward at tremendous speed.
Its target was Ferroseed, which had already driven its spikes into the ground to anchor its body in place.
Jasmine's eyes widened visibly. "That was fast!"
Her heart was filled with admiration.
As the Trainer of an Empoleon, she knew all too well how long it normally took a Prinplup to condense a Water Pulse.
What this represented was not merely talent and strength. More importantly, it represented countless hours of practice behind the scenes.
"Boom!"
As she was thinking, the Water Pulse struck Ferroseed and transformed into a huge wave.
The attack dealt damage while simultaneously engulfing Ferroseed in the surging water.
As for the effect...
The Olivine Gym's drainage system was clearly quite good. The water quickly disappeared from the battlefield.
When Ferroseed reappeared in view, there was not the slightest hint of emotion in its eyes, and its body did not seem to have suffered much damage either.
With its Grass typing and the recovery provided by Ingrain, Ferroseed was completely unafraid of the Water Pulse, even though the move had decent power.
The next moment.
Under Jasmine's astonished gaze, Ferroseed suddenly pulled its spikes out of the ground and began wobbling around in random directions.
"Not good. It's confused."
She realized that something was wrong.
Silas, however, broke into a huge grin. "Looks like today's advantage is on my side! Prinplup, press the advantage! Use Agility to rush forward, then attack with Brick Break!"
"Prin!"
Prinplup nodded forcefully, and its body was instantly enveloped in a layer of white light.
It pushed off with both feet, and its seemingly less-than-lightweight body suddenly shot forward.
At the same time, the white light around Prinplup's flippers was considerably brighter than the light covering the rest of its body.
"Snap out of it, Ferroseed!"
Jasmine clasped her hands together in front of her mouth, forming a simple megaphone with them, and shouted loudly.
For Pokémon, when they fall asleep or become confused, a Trainer's call can sometimes wake them up.
In other words, a "revival roar."
However, obviously, the reason it was called a "revival roar" was probably because it only worked in extremely urgent situations.
Faced with Jasmine's call, the confused Ferroseed not only failed to regain consciousness, but seemed to sense that another Pokémon was approaching and happily went toward it.
Jasmine helplessly covered her face.
"Bang!"
The next second, Ferroseed, which had rushed over in search of its "companion," was sent flying backward at an even greater speed, crashing heavily into the ground.
"Prin!"
Prinplup did not continue its pursuit. Instead, it remained where it was, grimacing in pain.
Looking closely, several iron spikes were still stuck in its flippers.
"Bear with it, bear with it. I believe you, Prinplup. You definitely won't be afraid of this little bit of pain."
Silas hurriedly comforted it.
This was Ferroseed's ability, Iron Barbs. It injured opponents that came into direct contact with its iron spikes.
Apart from the Alolan Pokémon Togedemaru, Ferroseed's evolutionary family was practically synonymous with this signature ability.
After all, both Ferroseed's regular Ability and Hidden Ability were Iron Barbs.
This was a very rare situation.
The reason this had been discovered was thanks to what happened after evolution. Ferroseed's Hidden Ability, Iron Barbs, would transform into Anticipation after it evolved.
Otherwise, researchers would have assumed that the Ferroseed family simply had no Hidden Ability.
"Prin..."
Prinplup nodded with tears in its eyes. It then raised both flippers to its mouth and used its beak to pull out all the spikes one by one.
During the process, it occasionally let out a cry of pain.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Jasmine hurriedly called Ferroseed back to its senses.
Once Ferroseed regained consciousness, it immediately sensed the condition of its body.
It was in very bad shape.
Brick Break, being a Fighting-type move, dealt super effective damage to it.
On top of that, because it had been confused, it had not taken any defensive stance at all.
Fortunately, its iron-egg-like body gave it fairly good physical defenses. Otherwise, there would have been little hope of winning the battle from this point onward.
The two Pokémon once again stared at each other from opposite sides of the battlefield.
"Prinplup, use Brine!"
Silas once again launched the attack.
If he did not attack now, Ferroseed would drive its spikes into the ground again and use Ingrain to recover.
Pokémon with recovery moves really were troublesome.
That was what Silas thought.
He completely forgot that Prinplup also had Aqua Ring, and that his opponent was thinking the exact same thing about him.
A blue stream of water that looked almost identical to an ordinary Water Gun streaked through the air.
Jasmine's expression changed immediately.
"Roll away and dodge it!"
Even though Ferroseed resisted Water-type attacks, Brine was absolutely not something it could afford to take head-on after having already lost more than half of its stamina.
When a Pokémon had lost more than half of its HP, the move's damage doubled. This was the so-called effect of "rubbing salt into the wound," making its power extremely high.
Without saying a word, Ferroseed fired its spikes out and transformed into a smooth steel egg as it began rolling across the ground.
"Huh?"
Silas raised an eyebrow.
Normally, when Ferroseed dodged, it would most likely avoid firing out its spikes, because it would ultimately need a little time to regenerate them.
Otherwise, even if it managed to dodge the attack, it would have no strength left to counterattack.
But Jasmine's Ferroseed was exceptionally decisive. It had clearly undergone rigorous training.
Furthermore, it was visibly apparent that the spikes on Ferroseed's body were growing back at an extremely high speed.
"In that case, send the Brine into the sky and make it rain."
Silas immediately changed his attacking strategy.
Hearing this, Prinplup raised its head, and the stream of water it spat from its mouth shot high into the sky.
"Drip, drip, drip..."
Not particularly dense, countless droplets of water continuously fell from above.
The referee standing nearby naturally pulled out an umbrella and opened it.
The "Brine rain," which covered nearly half the battlefield, was naturally impossible for Ferroseed to evade simply by rolling around.
The moment the Brine touched it, Ferroseed rolled even faster.
The pain on its face was clearly visible.
By the time it finally rolled out of the area covered by the rain, Ferroseed was already panting heavily.
The spikes on its body had also failed to regenerate completely as Jasmine had expected.
Pokémon could not simply recover out of thin air. The rapid regeneration of its iron spikes depended on Ferroseed's stamina and energy.
With the former nearly depleted, using part of its energy to regenerate its spikes naturally would not be as fast.
"Ingrain, recover!"
Jasmine hurriedly gave the command.
Although the spikes had not completely regenerated, there were enough of them for Ferroseed to use Ingrain.
"Don't give it the chance. Use Whirlpool!"
Silas naturally had no intention of watching all the results of Prinplup's efforts disappear.
Whirlpool's power was indeed not very high, and the damage it dealt to Ferroseed was also quite low.
However, maintaining its balance inside a rapidly spinning whirlpool was something that the vast majority of Water-type Pokémon could not accomplish, let alone Ferroseed with its Grass and Steel typing.
A dark blue current slowly surrounded Ferroseed.
Watching the silvery-green figure struggle for several seconds before disappearing completely from sight, Jasmine helplessly shook her head.
"Ferroseed is unable to battle. Prinplup wins.
"The winner of this battle is Silas Alaric from Viridian City!"
The referee's dutiful announcement rang out immediately after the whirlpool disappeared.
"Hmm, that was certainly a memorable battle."
As Jasmine recalled the Ferroseed that had lost its ability to battle, she looked at Silas and Prinplup across the battlefield.
"You two really have an incredible amount of chemistry."
"Prin!"
Prinplup proudly puffed out its chest, as if saying, Of course. What else did you expect, you defeated loser?
It swayed from side to side as it walked back to Silas, then arrogantly raised its head to look at its Trainer.
Silas did not hold back with his praise either.
"Yeah. You did an amazing job!"
He reached out and gently patted Prinplup on the head.
Unexpectedly, Prinplup shrank its head back in embarrassment and quickly raised one of its flippers to press the button on its Poké Ball.
"Piu~"
It transformed into a beam of red light and disappeared into the air.
"Hahahahaha! So it's actually a shy little guy."
Jasmine let out a clear laugh when she saw this.
She walked over to Silas and held out her hand.
"Congratulations. This is the Mineral Badge, your prize for winning~"
An octagonal silver badge quietly rested in Jasmine's palm.
It represented unwavering conviction and an attitude of never admitting defeat.
"Finally."
Silas eagerly accepted the Mineral Badge.
"I finally have all eight Gym Badges from the Johto region.
"Silver Conference! Here I come!"
A blazing fire ignited in his eyes.
As a transmigrator, embarrassing himself once was enough.
The second time, no matter what, he would win the Conference Championship, then become an Elite Four member, and after that, become the Champion!
"What an energetic young man."
Jasmine silently sighed as she watched the fired-up Silas, who had no idea what was going through his mind.
She suddenly felt that she might be getting a little old, even though she was still young and beautiful.
"Forget it. Maybe I should take Janina as my apprentice. That girl's personality is actually quite suitable for becoming a Steel-type Trainer. In the end, the Gym will need someone from the next generation to inherit it."
The thought flashed through Jasmine's mind, and she had already made her decision.
After obtaining the Badge, Silas did not stay for long.
After briefly confirming his schedule for the next day, he left the Olivine Gym.
He returned to the Pokémon Center.
Just as Silas was about to open the door, he frowned.
"It's me, Anabel."
A familiar female voice came from inside.
Silas rolled his eyes and pushed open the door.
"No, seriously. Do all you Psychic-type people like casually entering other people's rooms?"
He looked helplessly at the purple-haired woman in front of him as he complained.
"You people?"
Curiosity filled Anabel's eyes.
"Who else is there? Don't tell me the rumors about you and Sabrina are actually true?!"
"No..."
Silas was almost laughing from frustration.
"I mean, where do you people even hear this stuff? Why does it seem like every single one of you knows about it?"
"Oh, we have our own group chats. It's perfectly normal."
Anabel waved her hand dismissively before asking again.
"So, is it true?"
"No."
Faced with Anabel's burning curiosity for gossip, Silas gave a firm denial.
"Oh, it's not?"
Anabel clicked her tongue in disappointment.
"We were really hoping to see what that incredibly powerful Psychic-type user would be like if she fell in love."
"Then why don't you go deal with her yourself?"
Silas shot back.
"Anyway, tell me. Why did you come looking for me? Has Nanu still not been released?"
"No, that was settled a long time ago. He just had to compensate for some things."
Anabel shook her head.
"I came here mainly to give you a warning."
Silas asked in confusion, "A warning?"
Instead, Anabel released her Alakazam.
"Alakazam, create a Psychic field. Don't let anyone else hear us."
"Alakazam."
The Alakazam with an unusually large and incredibly smooth forehead nodded. It closed its eyes and crossed its spoons.
"Hum~"
An invisible barrier spread throughout the entire room.
"What are you going to say?"
Silas was extremely puzzled.
This kind of preparation was clearly not something needed for an ordinary warning.
Several traces of hesitation flashed across Anabel's face before they transformed into determination.
"What kind of impression do you have of the Gym Leader of Viridian City, Giovanni?"
Silas's heart skipped a beat.
He narrowed his eyes and looked at Anabel.
"What are you trying to say?"
With Anabel possessing an extraordinarily keen ability to sense the emotions of others, Silas did not believe his psychological fluctuations could escape her perception.
Rather than trying to hide them, it was better to be direct.
"You've caught his attention."
Anabel looked at Silas and spoke with a solemn expression.
