The distance between the islands wasn't very far.
With Prinplup's help, Silas and the Dragon Elder soon arrived at the island where the Dreepy colony lived.
By now, it was almost midnight.
The bright moonlight bathed Silas in its pale glow, leaving a cool chill on his skin.
"Prin! Prin!"
"Alright, go have some fun. Just don't wander too far. We still have to head back later."
"Prin!"
After letting the excited Prinplup enjoy the ocean freely, Silas stepped onto the island.
This island felt completely different from the Dragonite island.
It was eerily quiet.
"Whoosh! Whoosh!"
To Silas's surprise, instead of calling out to its companions, the Dragapult simply tilted its head upward and launched the two Dreepy into the sky.
Brilliant flashes of energy lit up the night.
Silas twitched at the corner of his mouth.
Now that's certainly a unique way of calling everyone over.
The Dragon Elder simply stood there, leaning on her staff and waiting calmly.
Over the past few years, she had devoted a great deal of effort to the Dreepy colony, so she was long accustomed to scenes like this.
They didn't have to wait long.
As the two Dreepy returned, the rest of the colony soon arrived at the shoreline.
In an instant, the entire night sky was filled with countless bluish-green figures.
"Woo..."
A noticeably larger Dragapult flew forward.
Landing gently on the ground, it rubbed its head affectionately against the Dragon Elder.
"Good evening. Sorry to disturb you all."
"Woo."
Dragapult shook its head.
As Ghost-type Pokémon, nighttime was when they were at their most energetic.
Its gaze shifted toward Silas.
Then it tilted its head curiously.
"This is the Trainer I've chosen for your family. Would you like to have a look?" the Dragon Elder introduced him.
"Hello. My name is Silas. It's nice to meet you."
Silas greeted it naturally, showing no sign whatsoever that he had come hoping to take one of its children away.
Another Champion-level Pokémon! Let's go!
Inside, however, he was practically exploding with excitement.
According to Zero's analysis, this Dragapult clearly the leader of the colony was undoubtedly a Champion-level Pokémon.
That also meant there was a very good chance that some of the young Dreepy in the colony possessed Champion-level potential.
After all not every Champion Pokémon's offspring turned out to be as disappointing as that prince.
The Dragapult silently observed Silas with its long, narrow eyes.
It had no objections to one of its young leaving the colony to travel with a Trainer.
Just as the Dragon Elder had said that was actually a good thing.
Slowly, it nodded toward Silas in greeting.
The Dreepy seemed to understand that one of them would soon leave with the human standing before them.
One after another, they climbed down from the heads of their parents.
"Dree!"
"Dree!"
"Dree!"
They circled around Silas, letting out cheerful cries that sounded almost as though they were trying to win his favor.
Though to Silas, those cries sounded rather unusual.
"The trial is very simple."
The Dragon Elder finished communicating with the Dragapult leader before turning back to Silas.
"Since the leader has already acknowledged your character, all you have to do now is defeat another Dragapult.
"If you succeed, you'll be allowed to take a Dreepy with you.
"Consider it proof of both your own strength and your Pokémon's."
That was undoubtedly good news.
At the very least, he no longer had to worry about battling the parents of whichever Dreepy he eventually chose.
Otherwise if it happened to be the colony leader, things would have become extremely awkward.
Even so, the challenge wouldn't be easy.
Every Dragapult present was at least Elite level.
As the final evolution of a pseudo-legendary Pokémon, their strength spoke for itself.
If he accidentally picked one approaching Elite Four level.
He wouldn't stand a chance.
Just as the Dragon Elder had said, this was a test of both Trainer and Pokémon.
"I'll choose that one."
Silas didn't hesitate for even a second.
He made his decision immediately.
The Dragapult he pointed at lazily floated forward.
A faint smile flashed across the Dragon Elder's face, though she said nothing.
"In that case, we'll battle right here."
Silas naturally had no objections.
"Then I'm counting on you, Pidgeot!"
"Pidgeot!"
The extraordinary Pidgeot appeared beneath the moonlight.
A faint orange radiance shimmered across its body, making it look especially majestic.
In terms of pure combat strength, Blaziken and Pidgeot were probably equals.
However this opponent could fly.
Against a flying Dragapult, Pidgeot was clearly the better choice.
Moreover, while both Pokémon's primary attacking types were resisted to some extent, Pidgeot's Flying-type attacks were at least less heavily resisted by Dragapult than Blaziken's attacks would be.
If only that little Alolan Vulpix had already reached Elite level
Silas sighed inwardly.
He knew this battle would be incredibly difficult.
Winning despite a type disadvantage wasn't something that happened every day.
Type matchups often determined victory.
Still for the sake of obtaining a Dreepy. He had no choice but to give it everything he had.
"Then..."
The Dragon Elder, acting as referee, wasted no time.
"Battle begin!"
Acting as the referee, the Dragon Elder wasted no time giving Silas room to think before decisively signaling the start of the match.
"Pidgeot, Agility!"
"Pidgeot!"
With a crisp cry, dazzling white light flashed across Pidgeot's body.
Visible currents of wind gathered around both of its wings.
If type advantage was against them, then they would win through superior ability.
For Pidgeot, its greatest strength was the speed that stood above nearly every other Pokémon.
Whoosh!
In an instant, Pidgeot's massive body vanished into the night sky.
The darkness became its perfect cover, making it even harder to detect than it would have been during the day.
Hovering in the air, Dragapult narrowed its eyes.
"Rooar!"
A massive torrent of Dragon Breath burst from its mouth, sweeping across the battlefield.
As an Elite-level Pokémon that had lived for who knew how many years, its battle experience was incredibly rich.
Dragapult could sense Pidgeot's life force, but it also knew it couldn't accurately strike such a fast target.
The only solution was to force its opponent to stop moving with a wide-area attack.
"Steel Wing, split it apart! Then use Wing Attack!"
Silver light blazed across the night sky.
A blade-like flash tore through the darkness, splitting Dragon Breath cleanly in two before instantly closing in on Dragapult.
Without making a sound, Dragapult's figure gradually faded from sight.
"Pidgeot!"
Feeling its wings cut through empty air, Pidgeot swiftly twisted its body and climbed higher into the sky.
Its sharp eyes swept across the battlefield at tremendous speed.
Yet it still couldn't locate its opponent.
A glint flashed in Silas's eyes.
"Use Twister to surround yourself!"
Pidgeot nodded.
Its body immediately spun along a fixed flight path.
The sand along the shoreline was swept into the air, forming a massive spiraling tornado around it.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
At that moment, sharp whistling sounds pierced the air.
Two attacks struck Pidgeot almost simultaneously.
A faint crimson barrier shattered into countless sparkling fragments.
"Pidgeot!"
Pidgeot let out a cry of pain.
"That was..."
Silas's expression grew serious.
"Lock-On?"
Against Dragapult, he had no idea what moves it actually possessed.
The appearance of Lock-On had completely caught him off guard.
Very few Pokémon could learn that move.
Without Lock-On, Dragapult's Dragon Darts would never have struck Pidgeot so easily.
Dragon Darts dealt considerable damage, forcing Pidgeot to stop using Twister.
But Dragapult's assault wasn't over yet.
A brilliant purple aura suddenly enveloped its body.
The tremendous surge of energy was so overwhelming that even the Prinplup happily swimming offshore instinctively looked toward the sky.
"Dragon Rush..."
Silas recognized the move immediately.
It was simply too iconic.
"Dodge with Aerial Ace! Then counter with Sky Attack!"
Not a trace of panic appeared on his face.
With Dragapult already at a disadvantage in speed, he felt this had been the wrong decision.
One streak of white.
One streak of purple.
The two lights streaked wildly across the night sky.
Just as Silas had predicted, the white blur that was Pidgeot far surpassed Dragapult in both speed and agility.
Even with Dragon Rush boosting both momentum and speed, Dragapult still couldn't land a clean hit.
The purple energy gradually faded.
Dragapult's body became visible once more.
"Pidgeot!"
Pidgeot traced a beautiful arc through the sky.
In the blink of an eye, it swept beneath Dragapult before appearing directly behind it.
Realizing something was wrong, Dragapult immediately turned to face the incoming attack.
Like a divine bird descending from the heavens, Pidgeot crashed down upon it, driving Dragapult straight toward the ground.
Wrapped in Flying-type energy, Pidgeot's body appeared even larger than usual.
"ROAR!"
For one of the rare times, Dragapult let out an angry roar.
As a Dragon-type Pokémon, it possessed every bit of the pride expected of its species.
Opening its jaws wide, it bit fiercely into Pidgeot's Sky Attack with Bite, its fangs cloaked in Dark-type energy.
"Pidgeot!"
Pidgeot cried out in pain once again.
But it refused to stop.
Grinding its beak firmly, it forced Dragapult downward with all its strength.
BOOM!
The violent collision sent sand exploding in every direction.
A pair of purple claws flashed through the air.
Clang!
Reacting instantly, Pidgeot covered itself with Steel Wing, successfully blocking the incoming Dragon Claw.
However, it also lost the chance to continue damaging Dragapult.
Using the force of Dragon Claw, it immediately launched itself back into the sky.
Dragapult slowly rose from the ground, breathing heavily.
The entire right side of its body was covered with wounds.
Clearly, enduring Sky Attack while retaliating with Bite and Dragon Claw had taken a tremendous toll.
Especially since it had failed to stop Pidgeot's attack.
The two Pokémon locked eyes.
"Pidgeot!"
"ROAR!"
Pidgeot dove from the sky.
Dragapult launched upward from the sandy beach.
Bird and dragon collided in an instant, becoming locked in fierce close-quarters combat.
"Pull back!"
"Use Air Slash!"
Silas immediately issued a new command.
He had no intention of letting the increasingly fired-up Pidgeot continue fighting in melee, its weakest area.
