Chapter 448 - Chapter 448: The Ice Cave and the Battle Park

In the Pokémon world, those powerful Legendary Pokémon are often the key factor behind many major problems.

Take Groudon, for example. As a top-tier Legendary Pokémon, even though it cannot fly, destroying an entire region is well within its capabilities.

Of course, since Groudon's power originates from the land itself, it would never willingly do such a thing.

Moreover, most Legendary Pokémon spend the majority of their time asleep and rarely appear before humanity.

If Kyogre truly decided to "end the world," people could only place their hopes in Groudon, Rayquaza, or other Legendary Pokémon stepping in to stop it.

The most Trainers could do would be mount a token resistance while evacuating civilians and avoiding the disaster.

Just as had happened in the past.

Because Legendary Pokémon possess such overwhelming power, organizations like Team Aqua and Team Magma, the two major criminal groups of the Hoenn region, were often viewed as hopeless dreamers.

In most people's minds, Legendary Pokémon were not something that could be controlled so easily.

After several more exchanges, Silas and Professor Oak finally reached a conclusion regarding Urshifu.

Since it had been captured through a fair one-on-one battle of strength, Urshifu's level of acceptance toward Silas was actually fairly high.

At the very least, it was willing to follow commands, which was already an excellent start.

For wild Pokémon at the Elite level, disobedience after capture was usually a Trainer's greatest headache.

Any Elite-level Pokémon, regardless of species, possessed tremendous pride and had every right to.

Had Blaziken not also been a Fighting-type Pokémon, resulting in a battle that was essentially a head-on clash of power, Urshifu would never have accepted being captured so readily.

For that very reason, Silas could temporarily feel at ease sending Urshifu back to Professor Oak's Laboratory.

To put it in game terms, Urshifu's friendship level with Silas was currently somewhere around the middle range.

Not especially high, but at least stable.

Besides, Silas was still in the middle of his journey and didn't need Urshifu's strength for the time being.

At Professor Oak's laboratory, it would also help reduce some of his own burden and workload.

Otherwise, Silas would have to spend countless hours learning how to raise an Urshifu himself rather than simply benefiting from the research already being conducted at Oak's lab.

There was also the matter of upkeep.

A Pokémon as powerful as Urshifu consumed a considerable amount of resources every day.

Saving money where possible was always welcome.

"Then I'll be troubling you again, Professor Oak."

Silas smiled.

Professor Oak shook his head helplessly. Although he was pleased, traces of fatigue still lingered in his voice.

"You really know how to create extra work for me."

As Kanto's regional Professor, Professor Oak already had more than enough responsibilities.

Researching Ursaluna and Urshifu counted as "unexpected bonuses."

Even though he enjoyed every moment of it, exhaustion was unavoidable.

Professor Rowan was in the same situation.

As an expert in Pokémon evolution, discovering the method by which Ursaring evolved into Ursaluna now fell directly into his field of study.

The two Professors likely wouldn't be getting much rest anytime soon.

As for abandoning the research entirely?

That was never going to happen.

"Oh right, Professor Oak. I forgot to give you that item last time."

Suddenly remembering something, Silas quickly spoke up.

The item in question was none other than the GS Ball he had received from Mr. Pokémon.

It should have been handed over during Professor Oak's visit to Ecruteak City.

However, due to various circumstances, both of them had completely forgotten about it. To be fair, research on the GS Ball had gone nowhere for years.

Delaying things for a little longer hardly mattered.

Professor Oak waved dismissively.

"It's fine. Just bring it to me after you've finished your Johto journey. There's no rush."

"Alright."

Silas nodded.

Professor Oak added:

"By the way, when you return, I can upgrade your Pokédex."

"Upgrade my Pokédex?"

Silas blinked in surprise.

"Of course."

Professor Oak appeared to have resumed working while talking.

"The Pokédex you're currently carrying is the HANDY404 version. It really ought to be upgraded to Version 493. Otherwise, from what I've seen, your Pokédex only contains records for a handful of Pokémon."

Of course, Professor Oak knew the problem wasn't that Silas hadn't encountered many Pokémon.

Silas simply didn't need a Pokédex to identify them.

In that regard, it highlighted one of the device's limitations.

For novice Trainers, a Pokédex was an excellent support tool.

For someone like Silas, however, its symbolic value and use as an identification device far outweighed its practical utility.

"We're planning to add an ecological recording system and a semi-intelligent assistant. Simply put, it'll help Trainers learn more detailed information about Pokémon and answer basic questions.

After that, we'd like to add tracking functions, portable transfer systems, and even integration with Pokémon trading networks.

The transfer system is currently our highest priority and also the most difficult. It'll probably take another three or four years before it's ready.

The other features will take even longer.

We're also discussing having Silph Co.'s Pokémon Gear devices, what people usually call wrist communicators work together with the Pokédex.

In short, there's still plenty to do."

Professor Oak examined data on a nearby machine while casually explaining.

And this represented only a tiny fraction of the projects under his supervision.

After Silas urged him once more to take care of himself, the call quickly ended.

Apparently, Professor Oak had just made another breakthrough in his research.

"So, I'll head back and get some rest."

Brock exchanged a glance with Silas before standing up.

He hadn't asked what exactly Silas and Professor Oak had been discussing.

He was curious, certainly.

But he also didn't want to be scolded by his old man.

"Sounds good. I'm going to visit Nurse Joy and send Urshifu over to the lab.

Before that, I should probably have another talk with the big guy."

Silas also stood up.

At the Pokémon Center's training grounds, in a relatively secluded corner, Silas released Urshifu.

After explaining the arrangements he had made, Urshifu showed no displeasure whatsoever.

In fact, it seemed quite excited by the mention of delicious food and strong opponents.

Naturally, the opponents Silas referred to were Professor Oak's Pokémon.

Urshifu probably wouldn't get beaten up too badly.

Besides, Fighting-type Pokémon genuinely enjoyed challenging powerful opponents.

Urshifu also explained its own circumstances.

Through a combination of exaggerated gestures and incredibly expressive facial reactions, Silas barely managed to understand what it meant.

"It'll be perfectly safe there.

You can relax. I'll probably be back in about six months, which should be around the same time your child is born."

Although Silas was surprised that Urshifu reproduced in a manner similar to many Legendary Pokémon, he readily accepted the information.

To him, it was wonderful news.

As Urshifu's Trainer, if he wanted to, the Pokémon would almost certainly be willing to entrust its child to him.

Considering how powerful Urshifu was, Silas had little difficulty imagining himself gaining another formidable partner in the future. After all, surpassing one's parents was hardly impossible.

"Rrrgh..."

Urshifu still looked somewhat uneasy but didn't resist further.

One thing worth mentioning was that this newly captured Urshifu was female.

At least he didn't need to worry about a single father somehow giving birth to a child.

That would have been rather strange.

After finishing their discussion, Silas immediately recalled Urshifu.

In just a few short minutes, the combination of Urshifu's strength and appearance had already attracted considerable attention.

Thankfully, Silas hadn't released Blaziken to act as a translator.

Otherwise, he would never have been able to communicate with Urshifu privately.

Ignoring several Trainers who approached him wanting information about Urshifu, he headed straight toward the front desk.

With Nurse Joy's assistance, he quickly transferred Urshifu to Professor Oak's Laboratory.

"Ahhh~"

Stretching lazily, Silas happily entered what he called "slacking-off time."

The next day.

Silas and Brock walked down the road full of energy.

After a peaceful night's sleep, both of them were in exceptionally high spirits.

"Our next destination is the Battle Park, right?" Brock asked while reading through a travel guide. "Do you want to visit the Ice Cave on the way? Your Vulpix would probably love that environment."

"No thanks." Silas shook his head.

"Exploring the Ice Cave would take quite a bit of time. Besides, Vulpix's absorption of the Transparent Snow Veil has reached a critical stage. It probably won't be interested in coming out much lately."

"Then let's head straight to the Battle Park. I want to participate in a few battles myself and see how much Graveler, I mean Golem has improved."

Brock naturally had no objections.

Most of his Pokémon weren't particularly fond of icy caves anyway.

The Ice Cave they were discussing, also known as the Ice Path, was a cave labyrinth located along Route 44 in Johto.

It consisted of four separate levels and was inhabited by various Ice-type Pokémon.

Of course, compared to the underground caverns beneath Mt. Mortar, Ice Cave was smaller in both scale and depth.

That was another reason Silas had no interest in exploring it.

He had only just escaped from one enormous underground cave.

Walking straight into another one felt like asking for trouble.

As they continued along the roads developed by the Pokémon League, the number of Trainers around them only increased.

Battles were taking place everywhere.

Apart from a handful of friendly matches, most battles involved wagers of varying amounts of League currency.

For many Trainers, roadside battles were an excellent way to earn money.

Provided they were actually skilled.

Otherwise, they would likely lose more than they gained.

Silas and Brock, who looked relatively harmless at first glance, found themselves challenged repeatedly.

"Smoochum, use Copycat!"

A woman in a long dress commanded her Pokémon to launch a counterattack.

"Piplup, use Water Gun."

Silas responded with a simple order.

Two streams of water collided in midair.

Unsurprisingly, Piplup's Water Gun completely overwhelmed the Water Gun copied through Copycat.

"Smoo—!"

Smoochum tumbled across the ground several times from the impact.

"Ah! Smoochum!"

The woman hurried over and picked up her Pokémon.

Seeing the battle end so quickly, Piplup lost interest and casually waddled back to Silas's side.

"You really are an incredibly strong Trainer."

After checking that Smoochum was unharmed, the woman approached Silas while carrying it.

"This is the agreed-upon 3,000 League credits. I hope we get another chance to battle in the future."

Compared to the wagers commonly seen on dedicated battle routes, the bets here were somewhat smaller.

But over time, they added up considerably.

Just during this single morning, Silas had already earned nearly 20,000 League credits.

Over the course of an entire day, the earnings could rival those of a simple C-rank mission.

The best part was that his Pokémon could gain battle experience without any real danger.

No wonder so many Trainers enjoyed roadside battles.

Silas was beginning to regret spending so much time buried in Viridian Forest during his early travels.

Then again, it wasn't fair to say one approach was strictly better than the other.

His experiences as a bounty hunter had provided him with countless valuable lessons.

Both paths had their advantages and disadvantages.

Meanwhile, Brock had also finished his own battle.

After all, sending out a Golem that had already broken into the Elite-level realm was a little too unfair.

Unfortunately, it was actually the weakest Pokémon on Brock's team.

It wasn't as though he could send out Solrock or Ninetales to bully people.

Well...

Actually, Brock still had a shiny Magikarp.

But...

A Magikarp battle was perhaps a little too unrealistic.

"Beautiful lady! Meeting you today is truly the greatest honor of my life! I was wondering if perhaps you'd be willing to—"

The instant Brock finished his battle, he sprinted over to Silas and activated what Silas privately referred to as "Pervert Mode."

Silas offered the woman an apologetic smile.

Then he knocked Brock unconscious with a punch and dragged him away.

Honestly, Brock's condition seemed to be getting worse by the day.

A short while later, Brock woke up while still being dragged along.

Aside from somehow losing all memory of Silas punching him, he appeared completely normal.

Around three or four in the afternoon, after countless challenges, the two finally arrived at the town containing the Battle Park.

The Battle Park was a facility where Trainers could freely battle against a vast variety of Pokémon.

Dedicated staff members managed the park, and the Pokémon living there were highly obedient to their instructions.

The variety available was astonishing.

From starter Pokémon to Caterpie and Magikarp.

From Kanto and Johto species to Pokémon originating as far away as Unova.

As long as you had enough money, you could challenge virtually any Pokémon you wished to battle.

Of course, pseudo-Legendary Pokémon were excluded.

As for the organization operating the facility, Silas was actually quite familiar with it.

Looking up at the town's entrance sign, the two continued walking forward.

Many Trainers just like them were entering and leaving the area.

Beneath the large letters "BP" on the sign stood a shining five-leaf clover emblem.

This place was one of the Trainer-oriented projects developed by the Enta Group.

If nothing unexpected happened, it could be considered an early prototype of the future Battle Frontier.

Yet even as a testing ground, the facility was already thriving.
