"Hello, my name is Bill. I'm a Pokémon researcher."
Dressed like a wealthy young gentleman, Bill appeared very friendly.
"This is Ryoko, the daughter of the owner of Full Bloom Flower Shop."
He introduced the young woman beside him.
Ryoko greeted Silas politely.
"Silas Alaric, a traveling Pokémon Trainer. It's a pleasure to meet you both.
Especially you, Bill, I've heard a lot about you."
Silas smiled warmly.
Yes, the person standing before him was indeed Bill.
"Hahaha, not at all!"
Bill scratched his head shyly. "Professor Oak and Professor Rowan have mentioned you before. They said you're a very talented Trainer. Kichi also brought you up, he said you're a great person and helped him train his Pokémon."
Kichi?
Silas paused at the unfamiliar name.
Then he remembered.
Wasn't that one of the three people he met in Fuchsia City last year, when he first encountered Janine, The next morning, he had seen him practicing moves with his Sandslash.
But at the time, Silas had only given some casual advice, hardly what could be called real help.
As for Bill referring to Professor Oak and Professor Rowan as "teachers," that wasn't surprising. He was a top student from Celadon University, and as a well-known Pokémon enthusiast and inventor, it was only natural that he had earned their favor.
Silas laughed lightly.
"How are Kichi and his Sandslash doing lately?"
"From what he says, pretty well."
Bill shrugged. "But I'm not very skilled in Pokémon training or battling, so I don't really know the details."
Silas felt slightly confused.
He knew Bill was from Goldenrod City.
From the looks of it, Bill seemed to have feelings for Ryoko, and since Norman's wife was good friends with her, that must be why they met at Norman's house.
But how was Kichi from faraway Fuchsia City connected to Bill?
Caroline solved the mystery.
"I didn't expect you two to know each other!" she said happily. "Well, talented people tend to know each other."
"What a coincidence! Ryoko and I were just planning a farewell dinner for Bill, Norman invited you over at just the right time. You should join us!"
"Where are you going, Bill?" Norman asked casually while pouring milk for his son.
"I'm not going anywhere, I'm heading back to Fuchsia City," Bill replied with a smile.
Silas perked up.
"Oh? Don't you live in Goldenrod?"
"Yes. But since my grandfather is getting old, my older sister and I live in Fuchsia to take care of him. My parents stay in Goldenrod because my younger sister still needs to attend school there. I just come back occasionally to visit."
His refined manner perfectly matched his aristocratic appearance.
For a moment, Silas even had the strange illusion that he too was of noble descent.
From Bill's explanation, Silas also understood how Kichi and Bill knew each other.
Fuchsia City wasn't very large. Their families likely knew each other, so the younger generation naturally had connections.
Norman was long used to such situations.
In the Pokémon world, "nobility" essentially meant powerful Trainers. For an Elite Four–level Trainer, noble status didn't depend on birth.
"Yes, Goldenrod's schools really do have excellent foundational education," Norman said. "That's part of why we live here."
"Oh, Silas, did you say you once worked as a teacher at a Pokémon research school in Kanto?"
"Yes, Professor Oak recommended me," Silas nodded. "But it was only a temporary position teaching Pokémon Breeding."
Caroline's eyes lit up.
"That's perfect! Max is very interested in Pokémon Breeding. You must teach him sometime!"
Silas smiled.
"Mr. Norman is already very skilled in Pokémon care. Compared to him, I still have much to learn. And breeding mainly requires memorization and study, only after mastering theory can you perform well in practice."
Bill nodded in agreement.
"As a newly appointed professor, I completely agree. You need comprehensive knowledge before conducting research. I imagine Pokémon Breeding is similar."
"Actually, I have a good supplementary teaching set to recommend," Silas added. "It was compiled by my teacher."
Max, who was drinking Moomoo Milk, immediately choked.
Their smiles widened.
Max stared gloomily at his white Moomoo Milk.
His future suddenly seemed very dark.
Meanwhile, Max schemed about how to avoid the assignments. His gaze shifted to Bill.
Maybe this older brother could secretly give him the answers…
"Ryoko-sis~"
Ryoko looked down. "What is it, Max?"
Max whispered something into her ear.
She lightly flicked his nose.
"You little rascal, quite the schemer."
She glanced at Silas with amusement.
It was obvious Silas was "retaliating" for Max's earlier rudeness.
But honestly, she didn't think it was a bad thing.
"Well then, I'll leave it to you, Ryoko-sis. Here's your milk~"
Max placed a cup beside her and ran off to stand near his sister May.
Bill laughed. "What's going on?"
"He just doesn't want to do homework."
She casually pushed the milk toward Bill.
On the other side, Norman and Caroline began talking about May.
From them, Silas learned that May had once been afraid of Pokémon and becoming a Trainer.
As a child, she had been swimming in the ocean when many Tentacool appeared around her. Wearing a blue swimsuit and cap, she called out for help, but her mother mistakenly thought she was a Tentacool and tried to catch her with a Poké Ball.
That incident left psychological trauma.
"It's all my fault," Caroline said sadly. "If only I hadn't been so careless."
Norman comforted her.
"It's not your fault. She's still young, she'll grow out of it."
Silas, knowing May's future, smiled.
"That's right. And judging by May and Max, they don't dislike Pokémon at all. One day, she'll become an excellent Trainer."
(Coordinators are still Trainers, after all.)
"By the way," Norman quickly changed the subject, "I'm very curious about the Rainbow Wing. Would you mind showing it to me?"
Silas readily agreed and took out the Rainbow Wing.
"So this is Ho-Oh's feather…" Bill murmured.
The Rainbow Wing no longer shone with dazzling seven-colored light as it had earlier that afternoon. But if one looked closely, faint colors still flowed within it, extraordinary and elegant.
"It's a pity Ho-Oh didn't appear," Ryoko sighed.
Ryoko, standing nearby, sighed softly.
As a native of Johto, she held deep reverence and longing for Ho-Oh.
Norman curiously reached out and touched the feather. Its texture was somewhat firm, and surprisingly, it carried a slight coolness.
"I never imagined that Ho-Oh, which hasn't been seen for over a hundred years, would appear today."
He sounded deeply moved.
"When you have time, let me study it a bit, will you? I'm really curious about the kind of energy inside it."
Bill's researcher instincts were clearly itching.
To be honest, Silas believed he really might discover something.
After all, this man was a true genius researcher.
Or, put another way, half a madman.
Ever heard of fusing a Pokémon with a human? Bill had done it and even managed to separate them successfully.
Although the League eventually shut down the project, it was enough to prove both his brilliance and his recklessness.
Still, Silas politely declined.
"That might not be possible. I plan to let Blaziken carry it for a while and try to gain some insight from it."
Bill refused to give up.
"That's fine, that's fine. I can wait. Just let me take a look whenever you're free. You can supervise the whole time."
For a researcher, a legendary Pokémon's item was of immense value.
Caroline gave Ryoko a look.
Understanding immediately, Ryoko dragged Bill off to the side.
At moments like this, only she could manage him.
Silas smiled. He wasn't being stingy.
Having learned about Bill's personality from Professor Oak and Professor Rowan, he wasn't surprised at all.
Still, it was better this way. Otherwise, he would have had to spend more effort refusing.
Norman stood up at just the right moment.
"Let's head to the backyard and take a look at my Pokémon. We can exchange some ideas while we're at it."
Although it looked ordinary from the outside, Norman's house actually had a massive backyard.
Fortunately, Norman was strong enough.
Otherwise, buying such a large property near the center of Goldenrod City would require serious financial strength.
In the yard were:
Slakoth
Vigoroth
Slaking
Spinda
One could already see the early outline of what would later resemble the backyard style of the Petalburg Gym.
Though the number was still much smaller.
"Senior Norman has really traveled to many regions," Silas said enviously as he looked at the Pokémon he was seeing for the first time.
Aside from Pokémon from Hoenn, Kanto, and Johto, there were:
Staraptor (Sinnoh)
Sawsbuck, Stoutland, and Bouffalant (Unova)
All of them combined strength and appearance.
Norman was clearly pleased.
"I met this one in the Lost Forest. It was the prince of its herd. Its father was incredibly strong, I had to use Slaking before it acknowledged me.
This one I met in a small town. It's not very good at battling, but it does a great job taking care of its companions. And this one I found while exploring ruins…"
He enthusiastically told Silas stories from his travels.
Behind them, two little heads peeked out sneakily.
"What's so interesting about this? Let's go back and eat, Max."
A childish girl's voice rang out.
Naturally, it was May, Max's older sister.
"Come on, sis. Know yourself and your enemy and you'll never lose a battle, don't you know that? Besides, we're far enough away, the Pokémon won't affect you. Don't worry!"
Max sounded impatient.
"That must be Blaziken. It looks so cool!"
He stared at the red figure in the distance in awe.
Blaziken?
May blinked.
She knew it was the Fire-type first partner Pokémon of Hoenn.
"So tall…"
Her mouth hung open.
"Blaziken's average height is about 1.9 meters. That one's already over 2.3 meters. Looks like a tough opponent."
Listening to her younger brother mutter, May only half understood.
"Seems like May isn't completely uninterested in Pokémon after all," Silas said to Norman.
There was no way they hadn't noticed the two children.
Norman smiled and nodded.
"It must have something to do with Max. That boy really takes after me," he thought happily.
Silas casually let Blaziken carry the Rainbow Wing.
Blaziken's Charcoal was still being modified at the Charcoal Kiln in Azalea Town, so it wasn't holding any item at the moment.
If it could gain some insight from it, that would be perfect.
After all, it was Ho-Oh's feather.
Looking at Silas's other partners, Norman clicked his tongue in amazement.
"That's Gigalith and Serperior, right? They're quite rare in Kanto. And a Togekiss, that's very uncommon too. Wait… is that a Shiny Ampharos? My goodness, that coloration is fascinating. And that little Ralts looks very healthy. What are you planning for its evolution?"
Silas didn't have many Pokémon, but in terms of rarity, they were not inferior to Norman's, perhaps even more so.
As for the last question, Silas felt a headache coming on.
The problem was that Ralts didn't know whether it wanted to evolve into Gardevoir or Gallade.
Given its growth rate, evolution would likely happen in about two months.
After that, it would have to suppress the light of evolution.
Norman stroked his chin.
"I've encountered many similar situations.
Since Vigoroth are used to a constantly active lifestyle, many are unwilling to evolve into Slaking.
There are roughly two scenarios.
One: they truly don't want to evolve, so the light of evolution never appears, yet their strength continues to grow.
Two: they're reluctant to evolve but don't want to give up the power that comes with evolution, so they suppress the light of evolution.
In the future, your Ralts will likely fall into the second category."
After all, Gallade requires a Dawn Stone, while Gardevoir only needs to reach the proper level.
Silas asked, "How did you solve the second situation?"
"Battle. Continuous battle," Norman replied decisively. "But that method might not suit your Ralts.
For a Psychic-type Pokémon, simple battling may not be very effective."
Their discussion grew increasingly profound.
Max, who was eavesdropping, started to feel dizzy.
May seized the opportunity and dragged him back inside.
Moments later, Max ran back out again.
"Dad! Something's wrong, Bill seems to be having some kind of physical problem!"
