As the night deepened, the number of people in the fishing area dwindled more and more.
"Great, looks like we've got another madman today."
One of the fishing-ground staff, watching Silas stubbornly continue fishing, made the remark with the tone of someone long used to it.
For him, this actually wasn't a bad thing.
At least he didn't have to stay on duty alone late at night—having someone around was better than nothing.
"…What the—"
The moment Silas suddenly pulled out a Poké Ball and released a Pokémon, the staff member couldn't help blurting out an expletive.
Under the faint light, he could clearly see the Pokémon that appeared beside Silas—it was a shiny Ampharos, its soft pink wool glowing faintly.
Right now, Ampharos was fulfilling its usual responsibility: lighting up the area with the orb on its tail like a living lantern.
For Ampharos, it was also good practice—controlling the brightness and output of its electricity.
The staff member smacked his lips in envy.
This must be the luxury of the rich… he never imagined someone would use a shiny Ampharos as a flashlight.
Suddenly, he felt that Silas' high-quality fishing rod didn't seem worthy of its owner anymore.
Silas of course knew the fishing-ground staff was watching him—their burning stare was impossible to miss.
But so what?
He wasn't the powerless nobody he used to be; now he had both strength and reputation. His shiny Ampharos was also well-known.
In this situation, letting Ampharos out for some air was no big deal.
Besides, fear of being robbed only existed outside civilization.
Anywhere humans lived, laws and order always had to be followed.
Silas didn't summon Ampharos in crowded cities before—partly because of safety, sure, but mostly because Ampharos' appearance would instantly cause crowds and chaos.
For someone who hated trouble, the latter was unacceptable.
But an empty fishing ground? That was perfect.
The staff member soon walked off.
Of course, before leaving, he secretly snapped countless photos of the shiny Ampharos—undeniably excellent bragging material.
Silas didn't care.
He leaned back, casually hung the fishing rod beside him, and pulled out the "bonus" informational sheet about the offshore island the bait-shop owner had tucked into the box.
It was very thin—just one sheet, and when unfolded, barely larger than his hand.
"The following information concerns the offshore island near Cherrygrove City.
I, Munetada Saito, guarantee the authenticity of this information with my personal reputation.
However, since the first time I set foot on that island, no one else has ever reached it again."
Sharp, bold handwriting greeted Silas at the top.
This was also the first time he learned the shopkeeper's name.
Munetada Saito… he did recognize the name, though only from books—back when Saito became famous, Silas hadn't even arrived in this world yet.
Simply put, Saito was a man with maxed-out talent in fishing—or, more accurately, maxed affinity with Water-type Pokémon.
This kind of natural affinity wasn't extremely rare—though still much rarer than Psychic abilities.
Every few years, each region might see one to three people with natural affinity toward a certain Pokémon type.
But such people didn't necessarily become great Trainers or elite Breeders; those required other skills.
Still, to the Pokémon League, people with such affinity had important uses—such as negotiating with wild Pokémon or calming Pokémon in captivity.
Saito was one example.
Though he never reached beyond the Advance rank as a Trainer, he became legendary in the fishing world because Water Pokémon loved to approach him on their own.
His fishing style, from Silas' perspective, was like the ancient saying: "Those who wish to be caught will bite the hook."
Pokémon weren't being hooked—they were willingly approaching him.
So many people begged Saito to help them catch specific Water Pokémon that he eventually retired to this small fishing town in Johto.
Silas finally understood where all the signed premium fishing rods in the tackle shop came from.
He continued reading.
The entire document was extremely simple—more like Saito's travel journal of the island.
Ignoring the flowery descriptions, Silas summarized the core points with his eyes closed:
1. The island looked completely ordinary, identical to many small islands along the coast.
2. Its unique feature: despite being in the ocean, it had an unbelievably clear freshwater lake.
3. The island suddenly appeared before Saito when he was playing by the shore; after he explored it and left, it vanished from sight.
4. While on the island, Saito witnessed a phenomenon resembling the Aurora.
Silas tapped his fingers rhythmically on the rod.
These clues…
Clear lake.
Aurora-like light.
Located in Johto.
It was impossible not to think of that Pokémon.
His eyes narrowed.
Aurora.
Pure waters.
A vanishing island.
Everything pointed directly toward Suicune.
For a Legendary Pokémon like Suicune, hiding an entire island that served as its resting place would be trivial.
This also explained Saito's "affinity."
He probably wasn't born with exceptional talent—the Water Pokémon were simply attracted to Suicune's lingering aura clinging to him.
Completely reasonable.
A Legendary's aura was irresistible to Pokémon, especially those sharing its type.
Other types might not sense it clearly, but Water-types absolutely would.
Suicune, the North Wind incarnate, was powerful yet gentle—regarded as a guardian of clean waters.
Among the three beasts reborn from the burned tower, Suicune was known as the calmest and kindest.
Entei and Raikou rarely appeared, while Suicune wandered across lands purifying polluted water and even helping endangered humans on occasion.
Plenty of people had seen Suicune just once by chance.
Compared to the other two, Suicune had the best reputation by far.
Am I really about to see a Legendary Pokémon for the first time? Silas felt a spark of excitement. His hands trembled slightly on the rod.
But he quickly forced the thought away.
"Let's focus on today's actual goal: catching at least one Corsola."
He flopped lazily onto the chair.
For so many years, countless people must have guessed the island's connection to Suicune.
Saito likely "sold" this info knowing that.
Yet no one ever found the island again.
Silas didn't think he was that lucky.
In the end, Suicune decided who it wished to appear before.
"Please… don't tell me my luck is this terrible today…"
Silas groaned hopelessly as he released yet another Magikarp back into the sea under Ampharos' dim glow.
"Bwoo…"
Ampharos, startled by his despairing wail, accidentally dropped its paw into the water.
A faint spark of electricity slipped from its body.
Blip blip blip—
Bubbles rose as five or six Magikarp floated belly-up.
Ampharos gave Silas an awkward smile. Oops… misfire.
"It's fine. Looks like you're as unlucky as I am tonight. We can only keep zapping Magikarp."
Rather than being upset, Silas actually felt strangely comforted by Ampharos's accidental overkill.
Ampharos tilted its head. "Amm?"
Neither the trainer nor the Pokémon bothered worrying about the poor Magikarp. For a species with such absurd vitality, if they could die this easily, that would be the shocking part.
Sure enough, before Silas's fishing hook had even been in the water for a few seconds, the Magikarp that had been floating listlessly all recovered and swam back into the sea.
He could only hope that these brainless creatures would have a sudden moment of clarity tonight and—after getting electrocuted—stop wandering near this spot.
"Magikarp is good, Magikarp is great, Magikarp is number one…"
Silas muttered nonsense under his breath, reciting his improvised "Magikarp praise song" while continuing to fish, trying to make sense of why his luck was this awful.
Ampharos looked at its trainer with deep concern.
Please don't break down from fishing of all things, not after handling battle defeats just fine.
"If this really doesn't work, I'll just find a Magikarp with ridiculous potential and raise it into a Gyarados."
Silas offered some self-comfort, ignoring Ampharos's stare.
To be fair, Gyarados is an extremely powerful Water-type Pokémon. Even Champion Lance uses a Red Gyarados as one of his main battlers.
In Silas's long-term plans, his Water-type ace slot absolutely had room for a future Gyarados.
The reason he'd never bothered raising one was simple: spending early-game time training a Magikarp was simply too inefficient. Unless someone was desperate, no sane trainer chose that route.
Sure, Magikarp's massive population meant the odds of finding a high-potential specimen were better, but it was still like searching for a needle in the ocean. You needed patience…and luck.
And who knew? Maybe all those talented individuals were currently sitting somewhere at the bottom of some random sea, staring blankly at nothing.
Unlikely, but not impossible.
"Do you think we'll actually catch a new teammate tonight?"
Silas asked Ampharos, laughing bitterly.
"Ampharos…"
Ampharos slowly shook its head.
These pathetically weak Magikarp did not interest it at all.
The shore fell quiet.
Silas fished in silence. Ampharos lit the area with its tail. Under the night sky, the two formed a surprisingly peaceful scene.
…If you ignored the Magikarp.
Time slipped by. By the time the sky began to lighten, Silas still hadn't caught anything worthwhile.
As he cast his line again, both he and Ampharos sighed at the same moment.
They weren't physically tired—neither of them would be affected much by staying up all night.
But emotionally? Their hearts hurt.
"Ampharos…"
Ampharos called quietly.
"Change spots?"
Silas considered the suggestion.
"I think that's a good idea."
He agreed in less than three seconds.
After this entire night, he was mentally numb.
Besides, the fishing area was huge—he should've moved earlier.
Putting away his chair, Silas slung his rod over his shoulder and wandered along the shoreline of Fishing Area No. 4.
Ampharos walked beside him, tail swaying gently.
The pair looked almost like patrolling officers.
At this hour, the fishing area was still silent—no other trainers were crazy enough to show up this early.
"…Wait. Is something wrong with my eyes?"
Silas, sleep-deprived and groggy, pointed toward the coastline with a confused expression.
Ampharos glanced at him with pity. Its trainer truly didn't seem mentally stable at the moment. This wasn't normal.
Silas shrank his fishing rod, rubbed his temples, and focused again on the scenery ahead—the small island that had suddenly appeared near the shore.
Just as shop owner Saito had described, the island looked completely ordinary.
But both Silas and Ampharos were absolutely certain: that island had not been there before.
"…Interesting."
Silas instantly sobered up, excitement flashing in his eyes.
"Pidgeot, I'm counting on you."
He tossed a Luxury Ball into the air.
A very sleepy Pidgeot emerged, blinking in confusion. Why was morning training starting this early?
"Take me and Ampharos over there."
Silas pointed at the small island.
Pidgeot nodded—acting as transportation was something it was very familiar with. As long as it wasn't training, it had no objections.
With Pidgeot's help, Silas quickly arrived on the mysterious island—very likely one inhabited by Suicune.
…Actually, no. Not likely.
Definitely.
The moment he recalled Pidgeot, Silas froze at the sight of the elegant figure before him—a Pokémon wrapped in flowing white ribbons of air, overflowing with ethereal grace.
"…Uh. Nice to meet you? I look forward to working with you?"
Silas said awkwardly.
"Greetings, human."
