Silas looked at the two bickering brats in front of him, clearly troubled. He had a headache just thinking about how to deal with these little troublemakers.
Fortunately, after a brief argument, the two kids diverted their attention to his four Pokémon instead.
"By the way, Professor Oak, I wanted to ask—do you happen to know who Snivy's parents are?" Silas suddenly remembered the question that had been bothering him and asked Professor Oak.
"Hm? What's the matter?" Professor Oak seemed a bit puzzled. "This one was sent over by Professor Juniper. I never asked her about its parentage. The little guy seems perfectly healthy, though."
Besides, both Professor Juniper and the Pokémon League wouldn't hand out a starter with any sort of defect. Professor surely would have run all the proper checks.
"It's nothing, really. It's just that while testing Snivy's moves earlier, I noticed its inherited moves are a bit unusual."
Silas shared with Professor Oak the four inherited moves Snivy possessed.
Of course, the whole thing about "testing moves" was a lie he'd simply seen them through Zero. But Professor Oak didn't know that, and no one had seen him communicating with Snivy either.
Professor Oak nodded in understanding. After thinking for a moment, he pressed one palm upward and lightly tapped the other fist against it in realization.
"Ah, I remember now. Its father was probably a Comfey."
Comfey? What kind of Pokémon was that? Silas rummaged through his memories but couldn't recall ever hearing of such a Pokémon in either this life or his previous one.
"Haha, it's totally normal you've never heard of it," Professor Oak said with a smile, noticing Silas's confusion. "It's a Pokémon discovered in the Alola region an island area."
"The League hasn't fully compiled the data from that region yet, so it hasn't been opened to the public. And… well, how should I put this… it's a bit dangerous over there."
Though Professor Oak's explanation was somewhat vague, Silas could generally grasp the meaning.
He nodded slightly, not pursuing the topic further.
"Comfey is currently classified by the League as a Grass-type Pokémon. Its overall appearance resembles a flower lei, though its actual body is more like a light green fruit. The surrounding flowers aren't part of its body."
"It transmits its bodily fluids to the flowers it carries, and these flowers release a healing fragrance. It's a highly effective support Pokémon with healing capabilities."
"It just so happens to meet all the conditions needed to pass down those four inherited moves to Snivy."
"Judging by this, your Snivy probably has high potential when fighting on Grassy Terrain."
Professor Oak explained what kind of Pokémon Comfey was and added with a tone of admiration.
Though the Alola region wasn't open yet, it was only a matter of time. And Pokémon information wasn't something considered confidential.
Silas's eyes lit up. That was yet another piece of good news. It looked like he really ought to thank Professor Juniper for her help.
"So, is Comfey part of the Grass Egg Group or the Field Egg Group?" Silas asked, diving into the topic of breeding mechanics.
"Grass Egg Group," Professor Oak replied straightforwardly. "Comfey is more plant-based than animal."
Silas nodded. Pokémon breeding required compatibility not just any two Pokémon could lay an Egg together.
According to research, there are fifteen distinct Egg Groups. Each Pokémon can belong to one or two of these groups, and only those that share at least one group can breed.
The resulting offspring is typically the base evolutionary form of the mother—except when Ditto is involved.
Serperior, for example, belongs to both the Grass and Field Egg Groups, which was the foundation for his question.
As for how a plant and an animal could even breed in the first place don't ask him. It made no sense scientifically… but that's just how Pokémon worked.
Professor Oak was jotting down notes in his notebook, recording data about Silas's first three Pokémon. It was simply an instinctive habit of his as a Pokémon researcher.
He wasn't short on Pokémon data, but every time he saw a new one, he couldn't help but make a few quick notes.
Blaziken shifted uncomfortably. It wasn't really used to this kind of scrutiny. But when it caught its trainer's eye signaling not to move, it obediently held still.
Of course, another big reason was that it could sense another Pokémon was watching it closely, making sure it didn't move.
Professor Oak soon closed his notebook and offered Silas an apologetic smile. "That might have been a bit much—sorry, I've just gotten used to it."
Silas quickly waved his hands. "Not at all, Professor. It's an honor."
Smiling, Professor Oak then offered Silas some advice. "I just finished observing your three Pokémon. Boldore is the easiest to handle right now. All it needs is time to evolve. There's not much advice I can offer for that stage."
"The best thing you can do for it now is to give it occasional battles to release stress. Otherwise, it might grow anxious."
"Basking in the sun, enjoying a warm sunbath—that's the life of a Gigalith!"
As he spoke the last sentence, Professor Oak suddenly got fired up with passion.
Everyone around him remained perfectly calm. Even so, he wasn't embarrassed and simply continued his thoughts.
"Next is Pidgeot. You've done a great job raising it. The way its feathers are groomed and the shape of its talons it all reflects your unique training style."
"For someone your age to raise a Pokémon to this level is incredibly rare. Very impressive."
"Judging from its presence, I'd say it's nearing the level of a pseudo-Elite Pokémon. Keep it up."
"And lastly, Blaziken. I do have a minor suggestion here I recommend focusing more on its Fighting-type training."
"Even though its Fire-type potential is great, judging from its physical development, its close-combat capabilities are also quite good. But in terms of energy, it seems a bit unbalanced."
"You can actually see this from the condition of the feathers around its legs."
"You could consider adding some Payapa Berries to its meals they help supplement the energy needed for Fighting-type training."
"Blaziken is capable of learning Focus Blast, a powerful Fighting-type move. If it's lacking the energy to pull it off, you're going to have a hard time."
Hearing Professor Oak's advice, Silas nodded earnestly.
He had, of course, noticed the issues mentioned, but Pokémon training was never something that could be accomplished overnight it had to be done step by step.
What Professor Oak had done was remind him that it was time to pick up the pace.
As for that spontaneous haiku about Gigalith that the professor had passionately burst into earlier Silas just ignored it.
Professor Oak would show up on TV from time to time to give lectures, and he always liked inserting these kinds of haikus in between segments.
Silas had grown up watching his programs, so he wasn't surprised at all.
The same went for Ash and Gary, who were standing nearby.
Gary, however, was a bit annoyed. "Gramps, can you not recite haikus all the time?"
"Haha! Haikus are a great way to express a Pokémon's characteristics. They're a must for every true enthusiast!" Professor Oak laughed heartily, his voice full of spirit.
Gary rolled his eyes, clearly unimpressed. He tugged on Ash's sleeve and dragged him out of the room.
"Gary, what are you doing! I wasn't done watching yet!" Ash struggled, but Gary had him firmly by the collar, and he couldn't break free.
"What's there to watch? We'll have our own Pokémon soon anyway."
Gary pouted.
Watching his energetic grandson, Professor Oak smiled peacefully. He said goodbye to Silas and returned to his lab he had only come out because Gary had pulled him away from his work.
Silas glanced at the sky and checked the time, startled to find it was already past 4 p.m.
He quickly returned his four Pokémon to their Poké Balls and started walking toward Professor Rowan's research lab.
He had to say his goodbyes it's not like he could just stay the night at Professor Oak's lab.
Using his trainer ID to open the lab's door, he found that Professor Rowan was still deeply immersed in his work.
Silas hesitated for a moment, then left a note on his desk before quietly leaving.
By the time he had exited the lab, left Pallet Town, and summoned Pidgeot to fly him to his next destination, Professor Rowan was finally rubbing his sore shoulders and taking a break from work.
He turned his head and noticed the note Silas had left on the desk.
"Professor Rowan, I'm heading out.
Thank you for your help. (Bows)
Please remember to rest while working, and don't eat only sweets!"
—Silas Alaric
Looking at the note, Professor Rowan smiled softly and put the candy he'd just pulled from his pocket back in.
Evening
Location: Pewter City Pokémon Center.
"Hello, Nurse Joy. I'd like to activate my Pokédex," Silas said, handing over his red Pokédex and trainer ID at the reception desk.
Nurse Joy's eyes flashed with a trace of surprise, but she remained professional and took the items from him, beginning the process.
Silas hadn't spoken quietly, and the Pokémon Center lobby was filled with trainers who all heard what he said.
There was a brief silence, followed by a sudden surge of whispering among the crowd.
Silas ignored it. After paying the remaining 5,000,000 Pokédollars with his card, he thanked Nurse Joy and left with his Pokédex.
As for his trainer ID? The Pokédex served as the best proof of identity.
Once Silas left, the trainers in the Pokémon Center no longer suppressed their voices.
"Wow, a pseudo-Elite at such a young age!" one trainer exclaimed in awe.
"Yeah right," someone nearby shot back. "You think you're eating Dream Berries or something? That guy looks like he's, what, sixteen or seventeen at most? No way he's that strong."
"Exactly. Probably just some rich kid from a big-shot family. Missed the annual trainer registration and now he's making it up."
"Psh, like he even cares about starter Pokémon and a Pokédex," another trainer said, sounding extremely sour.
"Hmph, if you're so capable, why don't you prepare the same for your kid?" someone else mocked.
In no time, the Pokémon Center was buzzing with gossip, each person harboring different thoughts.
Silas, meanwhile, couldn't care less what they thought or how jealous they were. His heart was full of joy.
He walked up to the Pewter Gym and made a call.
"Hey, Jiro, it's your big bro Silas. Come outside I'm here to rob you."
"Rob me? What are you talking about?"
But the voice on the other end wasn't Jiro's.
