Chapter 132 - Chapter 132: Little Brats

"By the way… what's a 'starter Pokémon'?" Ash squatted down and made eye contact with Snivy, asking in a confused tone.

Snivy turned around and gave him a side glance. It thought this human child was kind of dumb.

He did smell kind of nice, but… not worth responding to.

Gary smacked his forehead. "Don't you ever listen in class? It's the initial Pokémon you start your journey with! Just like Squirtle and the others, except this one's from another region."

"Oh, oh! Like Bulbasaur, right? Bulbasaur's breeding method is really simple… Bulbasaur is the best choice for beginne—"

Watching Ash fumble his way through the limited knowledge in his brain, Silas felt like he was watching a live-action anime episode.

He shook his head.

"Mister, is something wrong?" Gary tilted his head, looking curiously at the handsome big brother shaking his head.

"Nothing." Silas couldn't exactly tell them, "You two are such a ship, it's canon in my heart."

"Mister, can I pet this… uh, um…" Ash scratched his head frantically, trying to come up with the word.

"Snivy," Gary reminded helpfully.

"Ah, right! Can I pet Snivy?" Ash shouted eagerly as if he'd received a secret code.

Snivy frowned its tiny, adorable face and turned its back completely, effortlessly using Vine Whip to climb onto Silas' shoulder.

All that was left for Ash was a leafy green back.

Silas laughed. "Looks like she's not too into the idea."

"Ah~" Ash let out a disappointed sigh.

Gary laughed. "Hahaha! Look at your dumb face. Snivy is super smart, you know."

"What'd you say, dumb Gary?!"

"Loser!"

"Say that again!"

The two of them started bickering again, as usual.

"Snivy,"

Snivy tapped Silas with her tiny hand. Let's go sunbathe somewhere else. These two are too noisy.

Without saying anything, Silas gently scratched Snivy under the chin with his finger. She squinted her big eyes in satisfaction.

With Snivy still on his shoulder, Silas walked away from the two still-immature kids and dug into his backpack, pulling out a brand-new Luxury Ball.

"Alright, little one, time to give you a more comfortable home."

He lovingly patted Snivy on the head, then operated her Poké Ball to release its bond.

"Here you go," Silas raised the Luxury Ball up to shoulder level, gesturing to Snivy.

Snivy extended a vine and lightly tapped the ball's button. With a flash of red light, she was pulled into the Luxury Ball.

Silas then pressed the button again, and Snivy, who had just gone in, reappeared shortly after.

After glancing around and confirming the area was wide enough, Silas pulled three more miniaturized Luxury Balls from his belt.

Snivy watched curiously. What's he up to now?

Silas enlarged each ball and tossed them out one by one.

"Guys, come meet your new family member."

"Pidgeot!"

"Balziken!"

"Boldore!"

Each of the three Pokémon struck what they thought was their coolest pose as they emerged.

Even the usually composed Boldore couldn't help but subtly adjust its rocks for a more impressive look.

Inside the Luxury Balls, the Pokémon weren't completely blind or deaf to the outside world they could see and sense what was happening.

So they already knew that a cute female had joined the team and were naturally eager to show off a bit.

Silas chuckled at their antics and sighed.

Sigh… a bunch of immature brats. But hey, they're my Pokémon.

He pointed at each one in turn to introduce them to Snivy.

"Snivy, this big bird is Pidgeot, that red one is Blaziken, and the big blue guy is Boldore."

As each one was introduced, Snivy politely extended her vine to shake wings, claws, or rocks with each of them.

Honestly, if Silas hadn't already adapted to life in this world, the scene before him would've looked pretty bizarre.

"She really is a cute little thing."

Silas thought to himself as he scratched Snivy under the chin again without realizing.

He didn't get the impression at all that Snivy was some prideful, unapproachable species like the rumors said.

She came off as clever and gentle instead.

After the introductions, Snivy slid down from Silas and began bouncing between the three Pokémon.

She especially liked climbing on the large bodies of Pidgeot and Boldore they were perfect for playing.

Of course, she was still a little wary of Blaziken, whose natural Fire-type was a threat to her.

But after a bit of playtime, the four Pokémon quickly warmed up to each other.

Snivy circled around Pidgeot while playing hide and seek with Blaziken.

The afternoon sunlight in this season was just right—not too harsh, but plenty warm.

Silas leaned lazily against Boldore, stretched, and patted its rocky body.

"You're probably getting close to evolving, huh?"

"Boldore!"

Most people couldn't detect emotion or tone in Boldore's voice.

But Silas could feel its eagerness.

"Almost there, almost there… I'd say ten days, maybe half a month tops before you evolve."

As he spoke, he silently called out Zero, and checked Boldore's internal condition. Everything was developing just as expected.

It had only been about half a month since Roggenrola evolved into Boldore, and with Silas' exceptional training plan and unlimited resources, Boldore's growth and energy accumulation were advancing rapidly.

It wouldn't be long before he could proceed with its next evolution.

While at it, he shifted his mental focus to Snivy, who was still playing nearby. Her status panel updated again, showing fresh data.

Even though this was already the second time Silas had summoned Snivy's panel, he was still just as satisfied.

First off, her height and weight stats being a Snivy from the League's official breeding center, she was naturally above average, more outstanding than her wild counterparts.

After all, the League had long since developed a systematic method for raising starter Pokémon.

Of course, Silas was confident that if he raised one from scratch himself, he could likely do even better, especially since his training could be more targeted and personalized.

But even so, the Snivy before him was already quite outstanding.

Next was the matter of Abilities.

Snivy's species only had two possible Abilities—its standard Overgrow, and its Hidden Ability, Contrary.

This Snivy of his, unlike the three he had before, only had the Overgrow ability, and not Contrary.

That actually fit very well with Snivy's current behavior and temperament.

Rather than being disappointed, Silas actually let out a breath of relief.

In his previous life, even though he wasn't deeply involved in competitive Pokémon games, he had still heard of the famous Contrary Serperior.

The Contrary Ability causes stat changes to reverse—stats that would normally increase instead decrease, and vice versa.

In battles, this allowed Contrary Serperior to use the powerful Leaf Storm, a Grass-type move that normally lowers the user's Special Attack after use. But with Contrary, that stat drop would become a stat increase instead.

This meant Serperior could deal massive damage with Leaf Storm and then become even stronger with each use, stacking boosts for devastating follow-up attacks.

Just imagining it gave one a sense of how overwhelming its Special Attack power could become after a few rounds.

However, in this real-world setting, Contrary was not nearly as ideal as it seemed in games, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, Contrary was a special classification of Ability. According to research, Pokémon Abilities could actually be categorized into many subtypes.

Contrary was among the most peculiar and unique, and researchers in this world labeled it as a "Personality-Type Ability". Other examples include Own Tempo.

As the name implies, these types of Abilities were often strongly linked to a Pokémon's temperament.

For instance, Pokémon with the Own Tempo Ability such as Slowpoke, Smeargle, Ludicolo, and Espurr often displayed bizarre and confusing behaviors.

Take the famous Slowpoke, for example. Its Own Tempo might manifest as extreme sluggishness or indifference, to the point that many people don't even notice it's supposed to be a personality trait.

Others, like Ludicolo, were always dancing, completely unconcerned with the outside world. If Ludicolo heard loud and cheerful music, it would immediately start dancing, happily enjoying itself even if it messed up. This is actually where the "loco" part of its name stems from—carefree and upbeat.

Espurr is solitary and self-willed, usually acting alone. It often gets frustrated because it can't properly control its immense psychic power.

There's even been sightings of Pokémon with both Contrary and Own Tempo, like Spinda, and Smeargle has been recorded having Own Tempo and Moody Abilities that make for insane personalities. Documentaries have only managed to sum up their behavior with one word: "chaotic."

Back to Snivy Contrary, also known as "Quirky Nature", has been proven through research to be associated with eccentric and reclusive temperaments. Pokémon with this Ability often struggle to get along with others.

If a Pokémon has such a personality, it not only becomes a huge challenge for its Trainer, but also a burden on its teammates, making team coordination and harmony much harder.

After all, Pokémon are intelligent beings with independent minds. Forcing them into a team where they don't get along only disrupts synergy and trust.

Silas was confident that he could tame and train a Contrary Snivy, no matter how stubborn or temperamental it was but that would undoubtedly take a massive amount of time and energy.

Naturally, he preferred a well-behaved and obedient partner instead.

And that was the first reason he was relieved not to see Contrary on the panel.
