Just as Pidgeot landed and Silas dismounted, a policewoman in uniform suddenly appeared from what had seemed like an empty forest. Judging by her appearance, she looked to be around forty.
Of course, due to the unique nature of the Pokémon world, people tended to appear more youthful. Silas evaluated her with modern-day standards.
By the standards of his previous life, this Officer Jenny would probably be considered a beautiful woman in her early thirties.
"Hello, please show me your ID," Officer Jenny said, giving Silas the standard League salute.
Such quick reflexes, Silas thought with surprise. He had nearly missed noticing her appearance entirely.
At the same time, he pulled out his Trainer ID and handed it over.
Officer Jenny retrieved a scanner from the satchel at her side. She swept it across the ID, and the device emitted a flash of green light.
"All right, Trainer Silas Alaric. Sorry to bother you. I hope you have a pleasant stay in Pallet Town."
She gave another salute, formally wished him well, and then disappeared back into the forest to resume her post.
Silas looked around, clicking his tongue in admiration. As expected of a professional.
In just a matter of seconds, he had lost sight of her entirely.
If they were enemies in a real-world confrontation, he would've already been subdued.
That was to be expected. After all, his actual experience in the wild added up to just three or four years. Even with extraordinary talent, it was impossible to match someone else's twenty or thirty years of hard-earned field experience.
Still, when it came to training Pokémon, he was confident.
He recalled Pidgeot and released Boldore. Now that he was on the ground, he had no plans to take to the skies again. He would simply walk the rest of the way to Pallet Town—it couldn't be far.
"Boldore!"
Boldore let out a soft cry after emerging, seemingly without any meaning.
But Silas, without changing expression, followed the subtle indication Boldore had given. Upon closer inspection, he too spotted Officer Jenny's movements.
He gave Boldore a gentle pat before heading toward Pallet Town.
Boldore's signal had been incredibly subtle just a small shift in one of the specific spikes on its rocky body. At the same time, it moved many of its other spikes as a diversion to prevent enemies from noticing the anomaly.
Only Silas and his Pokémon knew the precise meaning of Boldore's alert direction.
As such, Officer Jenny remained unaware that Silas had already spotted her.
Of course, part of the reason for her lower level of alert was the ID endorsement from Professor Rowan. With his backing, Officer Jenny had no reason to be overly suspicious of him releasing a Pokémon.
After all, if someone had even managed to buy off Professor Rowan, then the entire Oak Research Lab wouldn't just be compromised it'd already be a complete leak from the inside out.
Silas walked slowly down the road with Boldore, replaying what he remembered about Pallet Town.
Pallet Town, formerly known as White Town, symbolized the pure white color of a new beginning.
To commemorate Professor Oak's great-great-grandfather, Shin Oak, who ranked 931st among ten thousand Trainers, White Town was renamed to "Pallet Town."
It was a small rural village located in the western Kanto region. Once insignificant, it became well-known due to the emergence of Professor Oak.
Especially after the establishment of the Oak Research Lab, it earned the title of "Town of Beginnings."
Not only did many League-affiliated Trainers start here to receive their Pokédex and starter Pokémon—
It also symbolized how the invention of the Pokédex, led by the fifth generation of the Nishinomori family and spearheaded by Professor Oak and the other regional professors, paved the way for new Trainers to begin their journeys.
As Silas continued along the especially quiet path, he soon caught sight of Pallet Town.
The entire town exuded a rural atmosphere, made up of only a dozen or so homes. Each house was separated by vast fields of grass, and the connecting roads were just dirt paths.
It had the feeling of a place where "narrow roads crisscrossed and the sounds of chickens and dogs could be heard between neighbors."
At the end of the path stood a small hill. Atop it was Pallet Town's landmark: the Oak Research Lab. Behind the lab stood the same striking windmill Silas had seen from the sky.
Just outside the town, a stone tablet stood tall, carved with the three large characters: "Pallet Town."
Silas entered the town and recalled his vigilant Boldore.
It was mid-morning, and the townsfolk were scattered outside, casually chatting among themselves.
Seeing the unfamiliar but handsome boy, they looked a little surprised.
It wasn't yet time for the annual distribution of starter Pokémon, so few people visited the remote village during this period.
After all, with the Oak Research Lab situated here, the League's protection was top-notch. Outsiders had to apply in advance to gain entry—the process was notoriously complex.
However, the honest and kindhearted villagers greeted the boy warmly, assuming he must be another promising young Trainer.
"Here to see Yukinari, huh? He's up at the lab behind the hill. Be sure you've got an appointment," an elderly man with a kindly face called out, pointing behind the hill toward Silas.
"Yes, thank you, sir. I've already made an appointment," Silas replied with a bright smile and gave a nod of gratitude.
The old man nodded back. "Good, good."
"When Yukinari was a kid, I always said he'd grow up to be someone great. Look at him now. Back then, he was just a mischievous little rascal, just like Hanako…"
The elderly man chattered on, reminiscing with the people around him. They seemed used to hearing these stories—though perhaps they'd heard them countless times, they still listened patiently.
As Silas gradually walked away, the old man's voice grew faint and soon disappeared completely.
Walking along the road, Silas couldn't help but sigh in admiration—this really was a peaceful paradise, far more tranquil than any city.
The village houses slowly vanished behind him, replaced by a straight road leading to the Oak Research Lab.
Feeling a surge of excitement, Silas quickened his pace.
He arrived at the lab's gate, where a few guards were on duty. One of them stepped forward as soon as he spotted Silas.
"Hello, this is the Oak Research Lab. May I ask if you have an appointment?"
The guard asked politely.
"Yes, I do. My name is Silas Alaric, and I'm here by invitation from Professor Rowan," Silas said, once again presenting his Trainer ID.
The guard accepted it with both hands and conducted a quick scan on a nearby device.
"All right, identity confirmed. You may enter," the guard said, handing the card back and offering a reminder. "According to Professor Rowan's registry, your Pokémon include Pidgeot, Blaziken, and Boldore.
If you have any additional Pokémon, they can't be brought inside. Staff members will check and temporarily hold them for you."
"Got it, thanks. I didn't bring any others," Silas said with a grin, signaling his understanding.
The guard gestured to his companions, and the main gate was opened.
Silas gave them a friendly nod and stepped through the first gate.
After passing through two more security checkpoints, he was finally inside the main research facility.
"Hello, you must be Trainer Silas Alaric. Professor Rowan already informed us. I'll take you to his lab,"
A white-coated researcher who had been notified by the guards was already waiting at the entrance. As soon as he saw Silas come in, he hurried over and eagerly led him deeper inside.
"Uh, may I ask who you are…?" Silas began to ask, only to be interrupted.
"My name's Hikaru, one of Professor Rowan's students. I also work here at the Oak Research Lab.
My job is just to bring you to Professor Rowan. Don't ask me anything else, I don't know."
Researcher Hikaru was practically dragging Silas along as he gave a quick explanation.
Silas followed reluctantly, unable to resist, and soon they arrived in front of a tightly shut door.
Researcher Hikaru swiped his ID card and verified his identity through a scanner, unlocking the door.
"Alright, you can go in. The professor is inside. I've got work to do, so I'm off."
With those words, Hikaru hurried off, leaving Silas standing there alone.
Uh... seriously? Silas thought. That was way too rushed. So this is what researchers are like?
As he walked into the room, the door closed slowly behind him. In front of him was the back of Professor Rowan, busily working at a computer.
Silas greeted him, but the professor didn't react at all.
Thanks to Hikaru's earlier behavior, Silas had mentally prepared himself for something like this. He wasn't too surprised by the scene.
He sighed and looked around at the cluttered tables in the lab, then began tidying up.
He gathered up some obvious food wrappers into a trash bag but left the piles of papers untouched even though they looked like a complete mess.
After all, some people have a unique "organized chaos" system. It might seem messy to others, but they can locate anything instantly.
He wasn't sure if Professor Rowan was that kind of person, but just in case, he decided not to disturb anything.
Especially since mixing up any research data would be a huge mistake.
After doing a simple cleanup, Silas checked the time it was almost noon but the professor was still completely immersed in his work.
All Silas could do was sit on the side and wait helplessly.
He didn't dare to leave either. Judging from the earlier experience, if he walked out now, he probably wouldn't be able to get back in.
Ten minutes. Twenty minutes. Half an hour. An hour…
Time kept ticking, and Silas was starting to feel incredibly hungry, while Professor Rowan still showed no signs of stopping.
Silas finally pulled out a Fiery Rice Cracker and a bottle of Fruit Milk from his space backpack and began eating. Thankfully, these snacks were suitable for both people and Pokémon. He had bought plenty in the morning otherwise, he'd still be starving.
Crunch crunch.
Silas chewed quietly.
"Senior, I've finished the data analysis on my end. How's yours going?"
A calm and magnetic voice echoed from the doorway, and the speaker walked into the room.
Startled, Silas quickly put down his food and greeted him politely. "Hello, Professor Oak. I'm Silas Alaric."
Professor Oak was slightly taken aback to see a familiar yet unfamiliar face in his senior's lab. But upon hearing the name, he quickly understood.
"Oh! So you're Silas! Nice to meet you. Welcome to the Oak Research Lab!"
He greeted Silas with a bright smile.
"Come on, let's have some cup noodles together. Looks like my senior still needs some time to finish up."
Professor Oak opened a fridge nearby and pulled out three instant noodle cups to prepare.
"My senior has mentioned you a lot. Hahaha. And now that I've met you, you really are quite the promising young man."
Professor Oak laughed heartily.
A bit overwhelmed, Silas took the cup noodle with both hands, flustered but quickly expressing his gratitude.
This was Professor Oak, after all.
Back in his previous life, watching the anime, he never felt much. He even found it strange how emotional people would get meeting Professor Oak.
But after living in this world for so long, Silas could completely understand them now.
"Um, Professor Oak, would you like some Fiery Rice Crackers and Fruit Milk?" Silas awkwardly offered the snacks from his bag. He felt like just eating cup noodles wasn't very healthy, but he was also a bit embarrassed.
"Hahaha, the Hoenn-style Flying Sound Biscuits? I'll take some! And the fruit milk too still the same flavor after all these years. Your tastes are really similar to mine!"
Professor Oak gladly accepted the snacks and took a bite, savoring the taste.
"Flying Sound Biscuits?" Silas was momentarily confused.
"Yeah, the Fiery Rice Crackers used to be called Flying Sound Biscuits. That was a long time ago. Legend has it that back then..."
With each bite of crackers and noodles, and a sip of milk, Professor Oak began sharing stories from his past.
Silas listened attentively, nodding along. The elder and the younger conversed warmly.
"Ah, Oak and Silas you two got here when?"
Just as the two of them were deep in discussion about the instability of Eevee's genetics though it was mostly Silas listening a voice rang out. Professor Rowan had finally completed his work.
Turning around and seeing the two, he asked in surprise.
"Just now," Silas replied quickly.
"What do you mean just now? You've probably been here for nearly half an hour, right?" Professor Oak bluntly exposed him.
Silas gave an embarrassed smile.
"Senior, I'm just saying—you really can't hear people when they call you, can you?" Professor Oak criticized righteously.
Professor Rowan rolled his eyes. "Look who's talking. Pot calling the kettle black."
"Uh, I actually think it's fine. I mean, being focused is pretty important for research..." Silas tried to ease the tension. He knew Professor Rowan's true personality was a bit eccentric, but… was Professor Oak like this too?
These two professors chatting felt way out of his league. Silas could only quietly mutter from the side.
"Don't scare the kid like that. You're making us look like mad scientists."
"Hey! Are you lecturing me now, Oak? Do you even realize..."
"Senior, when it comes to academics, I respect you. But in terms of dealing with people? You're lacking. You can't just—"
Watching the two older professors bickering in front of him, Silas fell into a daze.
Wait a second what did I come here for again?
