Chapter 91 - Chapter 91: Class Begins

On the second day at the Pokémon Academy—

"Room 201... hmm… here it is."

Silas stopped in front of a classroom door, looking at the "201" sign above it, and couldn't help but twitch the corner of his mouth.

Great, nearly 300 square meters on a single floor with just two classrooms. Pretty impressive. Lots of space for teaching.

The student list for his class had already been sent to him yesterday. The number of students was pitifully small just a group of new beginner-level trainees who had recently passed the entrance exams.

After straightening himself up and trying to calm his slightly nervous mood, Silas pushed the door open and walked into the classroom, greeted by over a dozen curious gazes.

Without a change in expression, he quickly counted the students 16 in total. Good, no one was missing.

The corners of his mouth lifted into a gentle smile.

"Hello everyone, welcome to the Pokémon Research Academy. I'll be your Breeder Instructor for the coming week. My name is Silas Alaric. I hope we'll get along well during this time."

A girl in the class raised her hand.

"Yes, what is it?" Silas signaled that she could speak.

"Teacher, do you have a girlfriend?" she asked, blushing.

Silas's perfect smile froze for a second. What was with kids these days? Asking this kind of question right off the bat?

"I don't at the moment," he answered, maintaining his composure. "But let's not ask questions unrelated to the class during lessons, alright?"

"Teacher!" A burly boy raised his hand, eager to ask something. After Silas gave him permission, the boy asked, "Why only for one week?"

"Because your official Breeder Instructor is currently in the Sinnoh region dealing with some matters. She'll return later to teach you.

In the meantime, I'm here as a substitute instructor at the invitation of Professor Oak."

Silas patiently answered their questions one by one. He was starting to feel that these kids were actually pretty well-behaved. Clearly, what Yezo told him yesterday about students causing trouble must've just been about himself.

Somewhere on a battle field, someone sneezed. A blonde woman in the audience frowned slightly and jotted something down in her notebook.

Of course, Silas couldn't help but polish his words a bit while talking.

"I know, I know! Just like that Kamigawa teacher who taught my older brother and the others!" another boy muttered from below.

"That's right," Silas said with a smile. "But during class time, don't talk out loud. Raise your hand if you want to speak, okay?"

He offered a gentle reminder while silently thinking—

Are there other substitute teachers for other grades too? And that surname 'Kamigawa'—wait, isn't that the same surname as Cynthia?

They might be relatives. After all,Carolina is a famous Pokémon historian, and her family members are quite accomplished in this field. It's likely they're teaching history-related courses.

Silas didn't dwell on the thought. He pulled out the roster and began roll call.

"Let's begin roll call. I need to get to know you all. Some of you may be meeting each other for the first time, so when I call your name, please stand up and introduce yourself."

Silas had also been informed that for this week, he would be taking on a sort of homeroom teacher role, since the Breeder who would be joining them in the future would officially be the homeroom teacher. After all, most of the students in this class were aiming to become Master Breeders in the future.

This was their very first class, and most of them likely weren't too familiar with each other yet.

He could only do his best to follow his own imagination of how to run a class. Honestly, it felt like a challenge for a kid who was "10 years and 82 months old."

"First up, Shōta Yutō."

Ah yes, the very same girl from the original Sires he one who got flak in the Pokémon Academy arc, yet had both Brock and Ash infatuated with her.

When he first saw the name on the list, he'd been surprised. What a coincidence. And just by the name, you could tell she was a model student—at least academically.

The girl who had just asked Silas if he had a girlfriend stood up and began her self-introduction.

"My name is Shōta Yutō, I'm from Vermilion City in the Kanto region. My Pokémon motto is: 'Train hard for the sake of my love!'..."

Watching the girl utter such an embarrassing line with total seriousness, and seeing the admiration in the eyes of the remaining fifteen students, Silas couldn't help but feel that maybe he really was getting old. There might actually be a generation gap.

Once Shota finished her self-introduction, Silas offered a comment.

"Mm, you're a very energetic girl. I hope you'll work just as hard when it comes to your studies."

Shota nodded shyly, her face flushed, and sat down with a ladylike poise.

Silas maintained his composed demeanor. "Next up, Hawke Oniba."

This time, the boy who had mentioned his older brother earlier stood up.

"Hello everyone, I'm Hawke Swayer. My big brother is the senior student Yazo Swayer, and my grandmother is Agatha. I hope we all get along well."

The little guy was clearly mimicking what he had just seen.

Silas was about to offer a few encouraging words when Hawke turned toward him and continued, "My brother said you beat him, and told me to give you a hard time. But I refused. You look like a good person, teacher.

"My brother always wears that dead-fish stare and bullies me by not letting me eat anything good. Please teach him a lesson for me."

Silas gave a gentle nod, praised the boy, and gestured for him to sit down. Then he continued the roll call.

"Next, Elly Akiyama."

While the students continued introducing themselves, Silas divided his attention listening to their introductions while also mentally taking stock of the situation.

Hmph, Yezo Swayer, huh? That explains why he was so "kind" yesterday. The moment I saw those dead-fish eyes, I knew he was up to no good.

He adjusted the non-prescription glasses he'd chosen specifically for today to enhance his scholarly appearance.

The lenses flashed with a glint that obscured the depth in Silas's eyes behind them.

Closing the attendance list, he spoke:

"Now, let's begin today's lesson. For our first class, we'll be learning about training techniques tailored to common Grass-type Pokémon. As we all know, most Grass-types have rather unique physiological structures, and they typically require..."

"In such cases, what happens when we pair them with Triseed Grass? Sundae, would you like to answer that?"

—Meanwhile, at the battle arena—

Yezo Swayer sneezed, and his battle command faltered again.

The blonde woman standing off to the side frowned and jotted something down in her notebook.

"Yezo Swayer are you feeling unwell?" she asked. "I've told you many times when both sides are evenly matched, the key to victory on the battlefield isn't just the Pokémon's strength, but the Trainer's judgment and presence of mind.

"If you're not feeling well, we'll halt today's battle training. Otherwise, we won't be able to pinpoint your issues, nor make the proper adjustments."

His opponent across the field had already paused their actions.

"No, Miss Cynthia, I'm really sorry. My body is fine it was just an accident,"Yezo replied respectfully.

He rubbed his nose and bowed deeply to his instructor. Even though he didn't understand why he kept sneezing, he knew that this was one teacher he absolutely couldn't afford to cross.
