Chapter 491 - Chapter 491: Promise me you won't play with your own soul

"As an upright wizard, I will not use your evil Dark Magic. I'm going to fight like Dumbledore, in the name of the magic of love..." Tom said solemnly.

Wade sucked in a sharp breath.

If old Slytherin were here to hear that, he might have had to light himself some incense and take a deep puff just to calm down.

Damn it!

Voldemort refusing to use Dark Magic was practically the same as the West losing Jerusalem!

"Then what kind of magic do you want to learn..." Wade asked helplessly.

"Something powerful. And not Dark Magic..." A strange light flickered in Tom's eyes.

Wade immediately understood.

Everything this brat had said about rejecting Dark Magic was nonsense!

He had his eyes on Wade's nightmare magic!

Wade turned toward Miravia.

"Miss Miravia, do you know any powerful spells that aren't Dark Magic?"

Miravia shook her head immediately.

Of the powerful magic she knew, almost all of it was Dark Magic.

Because she possessed a talent for ancient magic, the negative effects of using Dark Magic were far weaker on her than on ordinary wizards.

The same was true for Wade.

That was precisely why they dared to use Dark Magic so frequently.

Tom stared at the two of them in disbelief.

Seriously?

I've already hinted this obviously...

"Um... that magic you use to confuse people. Nightmare magic..." Tom finally asked shamelessly.

The squeaky wheel got the grease.

If he cared too much about his dignity, he would never get any benefits.

Tom had understood that principle a long time ago.

"I know, but that's Dark Magic, Tom..." Wade said regretfully. "You just said you were going to fight like Dumbledore and never use Dark Magic again. So..."

"What a shame. Otherwise, I wouldn't have minded teaching it to you. I'm the one who taught Wade nightmare magic, after all," Miravia said with an equally regretful expression.

Tom did not understand nightmare magic well enough to know that it was, in fact, genuine Dark Magic.

When Wade had first obtained the scroll from the Somnolen family's tower, it had been written clearly on it.

Wade had even questioned just how evil the magic truly was at the time.

Tom froze.

Wait...

Nightmare magic was Dark Magic too?!

"Um... is it too late for me to take back what I said?"

"We can't corrupt an upright wizard, Tom," Wade said regretfully. "I really couldn't bring myself to watch such a righteous wizard fall into darkness."

"No, I just..."

Miravia also shook her head.

"Leave the suffering of Dark Magic to evil dark wizards like us. It's so rare to meet an upright wizard who refuses to use Dark Magic. We can't lead him astray."

"No, I..." Tom was nearly in tears after being teased by both of them at once.

He had already spoken too absolutely.

And by calling Dark Magic evil, he had clearly offended this mysterious senior as well.

So...

It seemed nightmare magic really was out of his reach.

Tom was utterly depressed.

Such a perfect opportunity today, and he had wasted it all because he could not keep his mouth shut!

"I don't care! You still owe me compensation. I almost died just now!"

Even if he could not obtain nightmare magic today, he was still determined to tear something valuable out of Wade.

Wade smiled.

"All right. Then I'll teach you another powerful kind of magic."

"What magic?" Tom immediately perked up.

"I'll teach you soul magic. Complete soul magic isn't Dark Magic, although incomplete versions can sometimes become Dark Magic. Still, this won't violate your promise not to use Dark Magic."

"But remember this. The stronger your own soul is, the stronger your soul magic will become. So after learning soul magic, you absolutely must not split your soul or cut it apart for fun. Otherwise, once your soul loses its integrity, the magic will stop working and may even backlash against you directly..." Wade's eyes flickered.

"Split my soul? Of course not! Why would I randomly split my own soul?" Tom found Wade's final warning completely baffling. "Is soul magic powerful?"

"Extremely powerful. It's almost completely lost now. The fragments that survived were mostly modified into Dark Magic. I only learned it recently myself, and aside from me, the only person I've seen use complete soul magic is Ms. Paris. You know how powerful she is. Even Professor Dumbledore doesn't know complete soul magic," Wade said in an enticing tone.

"Then I'll learn that!" Tom, still inexperienced in the ways of the world, had no idea what Wade was really thinking and immediately became delighted.

Miravia looked at Wade curiously.

"When did you learn soul magic? Did Ms. Paris teach you?"

"No..." Wade shook his head. "I learned it somewhere else."

That "somewhere else" was Ravenclaw's Diadem.

After discovering that the Diadem contained a highly advanced "AI" copied from Ravenclaw's vast knowledge, Wade had immediately asked it how to create an advanced "AI" like itself.

The Diadem had told him that it could not find any knowledge of soul magic within Wade's own understanding, which meant he was incapable of creating a high-level "consciousness."

In other words, one needed knowledge of soul magic to create consciousnesses like the one inside the Diadem or the Sorting Hat.

So the quick-witted Wade had simply changed the question and asked the Diadem to teach him complete soul magic instead.

As one of the four founders, Ravenclaw had naturally known soul magic as well.

Otherwise, she would never have been able to infuse the Sorting Hat with part of her own consciousness in the first place.

In other words, all four founders had known soul magic.

So even if Wade had gone to Slytherin, he could have obtained complete soul magic from him as well.

Old Slytherin and all the knowledge he possessed could now be considered part of Tom's foundation.

Wade was using Tom's own resources to compensate Tom, and Tom still had to be grateful to him for it.

It was admittedly a little shameless.

But if he could fool Tom into never splitting his soul in the future, then that madman Voldemort would never appear again.

This was practically a deed of immeasurable virtue!

If the system was not malfunctioning, it ought to reward him with a huge pile of merit points!

"All right. Go choose a room and settle in first. I'll teach you tomorrow," Wade said solemnly.

Tom happily dragged his suitcase away with Nagini to choose a room.

Miravia watched him leave, then could not help saying, "I have this strange feeling that you're scamming an idiot..."

Wade immediately raised a finger to his lips.

"Shh... Keep your voice down! It took me long enough to convince him. If he hears you, you can be the one to coax him back!"

...

Over the following week, Wade genuinely taught Tom soul magic.

Miravia and Nagini listened in as well, since Wade made no attempt to hide anything from them.

During the lessons, Wade repeatedly emphasised the damage that splitting one's soul could cause, especially the risk of mental instability.

In truth, Wade was not worried about Tom having ambition.

After all, Wade himself was ambitious.

What worried him was Tom becoming that madman Voldemort.

Sometimes, a madman was far harder to deal with than a rational person.

An arrogant madman did not care about consequences, which made his actions impossible to predict and therefore much harder to handle.

Besides, people were not made of wood or stone. After spending several years together, Wade genuinely did not want to see the Tom of today fall into darkness again.

"Mastering soul magic can not only use the power of your soul to increase your casting speed, but also strengthen the power of your spells. After all, the concentration required for spellcasting ultimately comes from your own soul. Soul magic can also directly attack an enemy's soul, leaving them dazed or unconscious. And it's extremely subtle. They may not even realise what happened."

Wade continued explaining.

"You can even use sufficiently powerful soul energy to create soul puppets. Of course, the strength of those puppets depends on the strength of your own soul."

That day, Wade was guiding Tom through soul magic as usual, and Tom listened attentively.

"Can you summon soul puppets already?" Tom asked.

"I only learned recently, but I can manage it."

Wade raised his wand and lightly tapped the air.

Two translucent wolves suddenly appeared in front of Tom.

Under Wade's command, the two spectral wolves lunged at a target and left deep claw marks across its surface.

"This requires a strong imagination! The principle is similar to Transfiguration," Wade explained.

In fact, soul puppets were essentially a form of Transfiguration performed using soul power.

But unlike ordinary Transfiguration, these spiritual constructs could ignore many forms of defence.

That was one of the reasons Wade considered soul magic so powerful.

And the method used to create advanced "AI" was actually derived from the same technique used to make soul puppets.

One had to imitate a soul, use soul power to create a "false soul," then imprint certain traits from one's own soul onto it.

The "false soul" would gradually develop its own patterns of behaviour and thought.

Once enough soul traits were imprinted, the "false soul" would become what Wade called an advanced "AI."

Of course, this required extremely high mastery of soul magic and exceptionally powerful soul strength.

For Wade, who had only recently begun learning it, being able to create soul puppets strong enough to leave marks on a target within a month was already remarkable.

Wade suspected that Lucifer, his magical flame, might have been imprinted with some of his own soul traits at the moment of its creation.

Otherwise, how could Lucifer have known so much from the instant he was born?

Just as Tom and the others resumed practising soul magic, Toby walked in carrying a letter.

"Young Master Wade, Grindelwald has sent you a letter."

Although the moving castle had been completely hidden, Wade had still left several special methods for receiving messages.

If the recipient of a letter was inside the castle, the owl would first fly to another designated location, where the castle's house-elves would detect it.

Only after the house-elves confirmed that there was no danger would they activate the magic Wade had prepared and teleport the owl directly to the castle.

That prevented anyone from simply following an owl to discover the castle's location.

Wade took the letter and opened it.

"Aha! The old man finally found the Scourers' hideout..."
